Prologue
The explosion in the Manhattan down town harbor had cause quiet an up roar. Mortals suspected terroist. It was already all over the news. It wasn’t though. Nakoma knew better. She had been alive long before the Mortals had even invented bombs. Long enough to know when it was the Dark Fey or it was the actual baseless, irrelevant and pointless reasons of Mortlas to start a war.
Watching as the Mortals below began to arrive to put the fire out, Queen Nakoma watched a Hunter dart out from a side door of the building they had been surveilling. It had been quite the adventure so far, but she was ready to get this over with. “Now,” said softly to her Archers and Hunters. The Hunter darted down the ally and out of sighed. Nakoma knew they were jo match fornher Archers.
Her four Archers vanished from sight along with the Hunters, each of them deadly as death itself. It wasn’t long before her Hunt found their prey. She heard the dagger hit home, emding the Hunters life. A smile creased her lips.
Footsteps echoed down a fark allyway. “To your left,” Nakoma said softly, knowing her Hunters could easily hear her from her pertch on the lifted building crane.
Her Hunters darted to the left, each of them pulling an airrow from their quivers. Nakoma’s power surged theough her amd her eyes illuminated to a bright blue as she tracked her archer through the deserted streets.
“Go righy at the next corner.”
Then she saw him, the Hunter was running away from the Archers. “He’s fast… he’s getting away.”
One ofnher Hunters darted forwardnamd scrambled up the aide ofnthe allyway wall and headed for the roof. The other two parted ways to circle the Hunter. I nodded. “You got this,” she whispered in a low voice. Rain began to drum down hard, making her shudder in the cold but it was nothing compared to the sence of victory she sencer as she watcjed her Archer taken down the Hunter. Nakoma smirked.
She knew her next stop would be to see the Alpha King, Elijah Yansa and his new Queen. They should know someone was raiding Pounds, if they didn’t know already.
Rumors of Ried Tamit were circling the Dark World and the Fey Folk were devided on who to trust. In the last few weeks Reid had been making himself known in political circles and otherwise.
Word had it, he was out for Moonbloods. Hybrids. Creatures so rare they are said not to exist anymore. He was looking for a Hybrid Mate. And he had fabricates quite the story about how the Yansa Family kidnapped his only child and how how the King had Mated his only daughter by force. That he wanted the Hybrids Blood for Dark Magic.
If this girl was anything like her nightmare father, they were in for a long ride for sure. A tyrant, breeding and protected by a powerful and supposedly wealthy King and Pack, a Queen would be well protected.
“What is the plan here, Nakoma?”
She watched the door intently, her eyes scanning the side of the building and the roof top, looking, waiting for them to reveal themselves. The building was blazing now. If there was anyone left inside, they would be coming out of that side door.
Since becoming Queen of the Drydales, Nakoma had learned a great deal anout the world and how it works. Sometimes, you had to be ruthless.
Sometimes you needed to show compassion.
The seconds ticked by and nothing happened. Cupping her hands over her lips, she whistled for her archers to return, knowing they shouldn’t linger here.
She sighed. “We are leaving.” Waving for the Archers to return Nakoma turned and then scurried up the aide if the building, her soundless movement whispering against the wall.
Following back the way she had come, Nakoma and her archers hurried down the fire escape, jumping and landing in the allyway.
It wasn’t far enough away from the coming Hunters once they realized that the building said to house Dark Fey was nothing but an abandoned building. The empty husk of older days, the faded white paint on the side was but a memory on the sea warped walls and floors of the buidling.
“We can’t out run them,” I told my archer as I lined my bow and shouldered my quiver. “On my command! Shoot to kill the Hunters only. If you see a Human, leave them be.”
Nakoma didn’t care for Mortals. She thought them rather stupid. The didnt see the beauty of the world around them. If they did, there is no way they would ever destroy it like they have.
The Earth, a living breathing thing, it should be connected to its people. Connected and bound. Cherished and worshipped. Yet it was dying. Thanks to Humans and their ignorant ways.
Nakoma heaved herself up and over the side of the buidling. Mortal responders had arrived and were working to put out the fire. The wind atop the roof whipped her auburn hair around her face as Nakoma leaned over the side of the wall.
Instead, Hunters swarmed the area, brandishing firearms and flashlights. She felt her heart sink when she saw the sniffing dogs. Nakoma knew better now. Dogs were particularly attracted to Dark Fey blood. And her campaign had been a long one. She had wounded with her.
She turned to look at Yila. She was still pretty banged up. She had sigfered a fall and tore her angle to shreds. Even the advsnced healingbof Drydale blood wasn’t fast enough for this wound. No way would she last in a fight.
Waiting for the other Hunters to exit- if there were any left- was foolish. This place would soon be impossible to escape. She needed ro leave now.
“We leave!” Standing to her feet, Nakoma headed to the fire escape, praying she would reach the Shifter Rulers in time.
Ried Tamit was building an army. And he was starting woth weakened Dark
She hadn’t seen him personally of course, but his goons were everywhere. Nakoma sighed and knocked and airrow, debating.
Should she make a run dor it? Wait and see what it was the Hunters had been so desperate to deatroy? Surly it hadn’t been just for the sake of killing the Dark Fey?
Nakoma turned and led her Hunting Party away from the growing chaos. The portal wasn’t far from here. It would take her straight back home. Once there, she would have to seek advise on the new Queen. And the Alpha for that matter. A king, in his own right.
Turning left, Nakoma stopped inside the allyway, drawing her dagger from her belt. The last timenshe had opned or closed a portal, she had drianed herself. It still frightened her.
The Magic itself was strong, powerful and old. When her mother was still alive, Nakoma’s Mahic had been weak. It was almost as if her mother had released Power to her somehow.
And she was still growing into her power. Becoming stronger and stronger each time she cast a spell. Nakoma wasn’t naïve enough to think she would ever be powerful enough to rival the power her power had posessed.
“Over here,” she hissed at her fellow Drydales. Waving a gloved hand along the grimy brick wall, red runes rippled to life. Nakoma smiled as a red light rippled to life as power swirled around her feet and the smell of lavandar wafted up her nose.
“Home sweet home!”
Nakoma watched as the moving, sand like magic became visible before her and the bright, morning sunlight courtyears of her her hime came into view. Stepping forward, the circling portal grew wider. She tirned and waved for her her Hunters to hurry through, making sure her owople were safe before she took to safty herself.
She had work to do before she could depart again. For one, she needed to send a message to the Yansa Family. They needed to know what was happening.
However, before she could pass through the Portal, something struck her middle. Something pierceing, somthing sharp. Then pain pierced through her body and a pained cry passed her lips, her body falling through the Portal, just before it closed down around her, leaving her in complexand utter darkness.
