Prologue
There’s a man watching me from the shadows of my garden.
Like any other night, I’m laying in the soft grass of my backyard, staring at the stars between treetops and listening to the calming sound of the wind trough the trees.
Unlike any other night, there’s a shadow of a man, staring straight at me.
Sometimes the shadows of the trees move, and i can assure myself it’s simply an optical illusion. But there it is again, a tall broad figure of man that swallows up the moonlight.
Fear grips me around the throat and i swallow as i slowly crouch up from where i was laying, keeping my eyes on the figure.
You know how you can feel ghostly eyes on you when going to the refrigerator for midnight snack? Its probably just the imagination, but imagination can do wild things after the sun has set.
But i am no kid anymore. Ghost stories do not scare me anymore. Standing to my full height, i glare at Mr. Shadow.
And then i do the one most logical thing a person in my situation can do.
I run like hell.
Jumping and flying over the rocks and branches that litter the garden floor. How i don’t trip, I’ll never know. People tend to get certain superpowers when terror takes a hold of them.
Finally i reach the door and pull it open with brute force. Jumping inside i slam the door shut and i finally take a breath to soothe my racing heart.
I turn around and notice that granny sits at the kitchen table, steaming cup half-way to her open mouth.
She stares at me.
I stare back.
Then she bursts out laughing and my shoulders sag from the dropping adrenaline. “I knew you shouldn’t have watched that movie with your friends mi rosa” putting down her steaming cup she looks at me with amused eyes. “I have never seen you run that fast before.”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. I was simply exercising” i try to sound dismissive but i can’t stop the big grin from spreading.
Soon, i am sitting next to her at the table as we talk about everything and nothing.
While outside, the shadow turns around and walks back towards the forest.
