Chapter 1
•Wake up, my little Angel.•
Those words always start my day. It’s mixed with a peck on my cheek and it gives me a boost to my day.
“Lily, come on. Wake up.” Dad’s voice would say tap me a few times. I didn’t have a choice, and I’d be late for work if I don’t stand up now.
“Dad, I’m awake. Thanks. Good morning.” I only say that so he’ll leave me alone. After 10 minutes, he would whisper.
“We don’t want the pancakes to get cold now, do we?”
That one always got me good. “Nice one Dad.” I would smirk and get to the bathroom.
•Remember, just as I taught you, courtesy but put your eyes on the prize. Walk with courage and strength. Don’t get nervous or scared. Whatever you do, don’t cry. Understood?•
“Miss. Lily, you may proceed.” The receptionist said to me after receiving a call on the intercom.
•Breath. I’m here for you.•
I smiled and walked in, a meeting room I propose. A board of directors and the top boss were all present.
•Calm down. Speak when spoken to.•
“Lily, what do you have for us today?” One man from the table asked.
“Good morning sirs. What I have is nothing much. I’m just here to show you a few things and hope I get a job here.” I replied, looking directly to the man in the middle.
“Ok, let it out.” Another said.
“Well, in case you haven’t noticed, the demand for your goods has dropped significantly, which is costing your company more than it can afford.”
They all looked at me, strangely at first, trying to scan me or so.
“Come on, you have to agree. Your shipments are being stolen, you’re losing contracts and almost all your partners are shutting the door on you. Don’t pretend all is well.” I said as I walked towards one end of the table.
“Who do you work for?” One of them asked.
“I work alone. I’m just looking for a job, the bills won’t pay themselves.” I smiled and walked up to the first man on the right side of the table.
“I don’t want much. Just a job with a beautiful salary and I’d be fine.” I said and walked back to the front of the room.
“Did I mention that I have new ideas on how to increase your customer service?” I smirked.
“We won’t deny, all that you said is true, but how can we trust you? I mean for someone like you to know about our vital information, you can’t just be a random person on the street.”
“I made research. You can’t just walk into an organization one day and expect a job without working for it.” I replied.
“We’ll get back to you.” The man in the middle said. He had been quiet throughout the whole presentation.
I took a bow and left.
“They said they’ll get back to me dad,” I said as I entered the house.
“Lily dear. Come here.” Dad hugged me as I walked towards him.
“But I know I’m going to get the job, I’m sure of it.” I smiled.
“Don’t you feel uncomfortable? You know that your sister worked there before she died and....”
“Dad, I’d be fine,” I said firmly.
“If you say so.” Dad sighed.
The real reason why I wanted to work at that company is to avenge my sister’s death.
They told us that it was a plane crash, but I was there when she died. She came to see me at school that day and told me to wait for her, she wanted to get something from her car.
She took too long and I decided to check if everything was alright. There was a man with her, he said a few things to her and she looked terrified, just then, I heard gunshots. When I looked back at her, she was lifeless and the guy ran away.
My sister died in my presence and I couldn’t do anything about it. I saw who he was, and I had seen him severally on my sister’s phone, he was her boss. I was going back to make him pay for what he did to me.
Dad doesn’t know what my major aim is. He thinks I just want to pay the bills, so that’s what I’m doing to make him believe.
“I don’t just want to lose my two daughters to the same cause,” Dad whispered. “Dad, I’d be fine, ok? I promise you that you won’t lose me.” I smiled and embraced him.
Once in a while, I hear Emily talking to me. She tells me what to do, I feel her presence. Its been 6 years now, and I’ve given into it, she’s still here, just wants me to play out her role.
Dad hasn’t gotten over Emily’s death, neither have I.
Once in a while, I dream of the day she died and that is why I want to avenge her death, to clear it off my chest.
