Chapter 1 - The Razing

Dark clouds billowed across the azure sky, blotting out the sun and casting an ominous shadow over the tranquil village. Judith paused her work in the herb garden, a sense of unease prickling the back of her neck. The air was thick with an electric tension, the birds falling silent, and the breeze carrying a faint rumble that grew steadily louder.

“What in the world?” she murmured, wiping the sweat from her brow as she scanned the horizon.

Suddenly, a deafening roar shattered the stillness, causing Judith to jump in fright. She whirled around just as a massive, winged silhouette blotted out the sky, descending with earth-shaking force. Flames erupted all around her, engulfing buildings and sending villagers running and screaming in terror.

Paralyzed by a combination of fear and mesmerized awe, Judith could only stare in horror as the colossal beast landed, its claws gouging deep furrows in the earth. Thrashing its enormous head, the creature unleashed another earth-shattering roar that made the very ground tremble.

Judith’s heart pounded in her chest as she beheld the majestic, fearsome creature. Shimmering scales the color of molten gold covered its titanic frame, massive wings furled at its flanks. Razor-sharp talons the size of swords protruded from its massive paws, and its serpentine neck craned down, revealing a head crowned with wicked horns and eyes that glowed with primal power.

“The Dragon King...” Judith breathed, her voice barely audible over the din of destruction.

Vlekaris, the immortal and merciless ruler of the draconic realm, had descended upon her peaceful village. As the realization struck her, Judith felt her blood run cold. She knew his kind was drawn to the strong-willed and the beautiful, and she prayed he would not notice her amongst the chaos.

But the Dragon King’s gaze swept the area, and Judith felt those burning, inhuman eyes lock onto her. A shiver of dread ran down her spine as Vlekaris let out a rumbling growl, his massive head swinging in her direction. Transfixed by his sheer, awe-inspiring presence, she could only stand paralyzed as he surged forward, his giant claws snatching her up in a vice-like grip.

Judith’s scream died in her throat as the ground fell away, the world narrowing to the thunderous beat of Vlekaris’s wings as he carried her skyward. She clutched at his claws in a futile attempt to free herself, but the Dragon King’s hold was unyielding. Panic flooded her senses as the village and her home grew smaller below, disappearing into the distance.

Vlekaris’s powerful wingbeats propelled them higher, the air growing colder and thinner. Judith shivered, both from the biting chill and the overwhelming terror of her situation. She dared not look down, her gaze fixed on the imposing visage of the Dragon King as he carried her ever deeper into the unknown.

After what felt like an eternity, a towering mountain came into view, its peak wreathed in smoke and flames. Vlekaris angled his descent, and Judith’s breath caught in her throat as she beheld the ominous, volcanic lair that was his domain. The beast’s claws tightened around her as they touched down on a scorched, rocky ledge, and Judith found herself face-to-face with the living embodiment of her people’s darkest legends.

Up close, the Dragon King was even more awe-inspiring and terrifying. His scales glimmered like molten gold, and his breath came in deep, rumbling exhalations. Judith trembled, both mesmerized and horrified by the sheer power radiating from this ancient, immortal creature.

“Mortal,” Vlekaris growled, his voice a deep, guttural rumble that reverberated through Judith’s very bones. “You have been chosen.”

Chosen? Judith’s mind raced, her heart pounding as she struggled to comprehend her predicament. What could the mighty Dragon King possibly want with a simple village healer like herself?

“Please,” she managed, her voice quivering. “I mean you no harm. I am but a humble servant, tending to the sick and injured. Surely there is no need for-”

Vlekaris’s head snapped forward, his massive jaws snapping shut mere inches from her face. Judith froze, terror locking her limbs as the Dragon King’s hot, sulfurous breath washed over her.

“Silence, mortal,” he rumbled, his eyes narrowing to slits. “Your fate is now in my claws.”

Judith trembled, her mind reeling. There was no reasoning with this ancient, primal being. She was completely at his mercy.

The Dragon King drew back, his gaze sweeping over her in a way that made Judith’s skin prickle with unease. “You intrigue me, little healer,” he rumbled. “Your spirit burns bright, and your beauty is most pleasing to my eyes.”

Judith swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry. “W-what do you want from me?” she asked, hating the quiver in her voice.

Vlekaris let out a deep, rumbling chuckle that sent a shiver down her spine. “I have taken you as my captive, mortal,” he declared, his massive head lowering until they were nearly eye-to-eye. “You will remain here, in my volcanic lair, to be my consort.”

Judith’s eyes widened in horror, her mind reeling. Consort to the Dragon King? The very thought filled her with a mix of revulsion and inexplicable, terrifying intrigue. “No, please,” she begged, her voice trembling. “I beg you, let me go. I have nothing to offer one such as you.”

Vlekaris let out a rumbling growl, his claws tightening around her. “You have already offered me what I desire,” he rumbled. “Your defiant spirit and untamed beauty. You are mine now, mortal, and you will submit to me.”

Judith’s heart pounded in her chest as she stared up at the towering Dragon King, his sheer power and presence overwhelming her senses. She knew in that moment that there was no escaping this ancient, immortal monster. Her fate was now intertwined with his, and she could only pray that she would find the strength to survive whatever lay ahead.
