Chapter 1: The Village Massacre

The acrid stench of smoke and death hung heavy in the night air, a vile miasma that seemed to choke the very soul. Elia pressed her trembling body against the cold, damp stone of the village well, her eyes squeezed shut as if that simple act could blind her to the horrors unfolding around her.

Flames licked at the thatched roofs of the modest cottages, consuming them in a ravenous blaze. The agonized screams of her neighbors – those poor souls who had yet to taste the brutal kiss of the invaders’ blades – cut through the crackling roar of the inferno. Elia’s hands flew to her mouth, suppressing the sobs that threatened to burst forth and betray her hiding place.

She had been roused from slumber by the first frantic cries, but it was already too late. The village had been surrounded, escape routes blocked by hulking, bestial forms clad in crude armor and gripping wicked, curved swords. At the vanguard stalked a towering, horned figure whose very presence seemed to leech warmth from the world.

Elia had watched, paralyzed with soul-rending terror, as her loved ones were cut down without mercy. Her father, the village elder, had stood tall and defiant, pleading for the lives of his people – only to have his head brutally separated from his shoulders by one contemptuous swipe of that massive blade. Her mother, her siblings, her friends... a relentless tide of butchery that spared none.

And now, she was alone, the last of her kind. The very concept was incomprehensible, an obscene defiance of the natural order. How could she, a simple healer’s apprentice, have any hope of carrying on?

The clattered footfalls of armored boots against the hard-packed earth drew nearer, jarring Elia from her panicked reverie. She held her breath, praying to any deity that would listen, pleading for the nightmare to pass her by.

“Over here!” The voice was deep, guttural, laced with a savage delight. “I’ve found a fresh one!”

Elia’s eyes snapped open, wide with primal terror, as a looming silhouette blocked the feeble light of the burning village. Escape was impossible – the hulking brute completely filled the narrow gap of the well’s opening. As he leered down at her with piggish eyes, his trunk-like nose twitching as if scenting her fear, rancid spittle flecked from his twisted jaws.

“My, my... aren’t you a pretty little morsel?” His laughter was a rumbling, bestial sound devoid of any shred of mercy or humanity. “The King will be pleased with this prize.”

With one meaty hand, he reached down to seize her, his grip like iron. Elia’s world exploded into terrified wails and futile struggles as she was hauled, kicking and thrashing, from her pitiful sanctuary.
