Volunteers

It was a sunny day. The people were quiet. It was the kind of day that was peaceful. It was morning and the scientists were still working on the time machine. The trees were gently swaying around. The birds were chirping. The sun was shining. The only sound you could hear was the birds chirping and the blowing of the wind. So peaceful.

“Dang blasted wire!” Robin cried out. He was the head of the scientists at the Laboratory of Protora. Protora is a huge country with meadows and fields and farmland. Filled with varieties of food ranging from noodles and rice to pickled tiger noses.

And he also had a giant burn mark on his arm. Beside his arm was a wire emitting sparks out. “Get me the extra wire!” he yelled. “And a cold cloth!”. Robin Mackeroy was a tall lean man with broad shoulders and wavy brown hair. He was working on the time machine with his colleagues. Let’s introduce everyone. Alice Barrow, his assistant, was a tiny woman who never left home without wearing braids.. Liam Phillips, the engineer, who was buck toothed and fat. Zack Ajick, the time expert, was the smartest person you would meet in your life. And last but not least, Lisa Anderson, who was a plump little lady with a wide smile. She motivated everyone. “Go on, I know you can do it!”

Finally, Alice returned. It was the final wire, the last piece. “Hand it to me.” Robin said. He carefully placed the last wire in the machine. It made a crackling noise and it stopped. It stayed like that for a few moments, then it whirred and the machine’s door opened.

Steam poured out and parted to show a magnificent inside with velvety red armchairs and a built in air-conditioner. For a second, no one said or did anything. But then, everyone yelled. They were so excited, noise poured out of their mouth like the steam poured out from the time machine. The din was deafening. After everyone settled down, they took a moment to think about their achievement. They stood with pride, gazing at what they had created. They stared in awe as they were thinking how many awards they would receive for writing history.

“I need a drink,” said Robin. He was looking pale yet excited. The others didn’t know what to do so they followed him out. They all sat at the lunch table. “We need people to enter the machine,” said Robin. “Where do we get volunteers from?” Alice asked. “Go on!” Lisa shouted. “I know you can do it!” ”Why don’t we go by in ourselves?” Zack suggested. “Too risky.” replied Robin “How about the newspaper?” Robin said. “ We can make a signing column. We can choose one lucky person.” “That sounds like a plan to me,” said Alice.

Sally was eating her breakfast of bacon and eggs when she heard her doorbell ring. She ran to get it and saw a newspaper on the doorstep. She almost spit her food out. “Hoh!” Sally exclaimed, while looking at the yellowed newspaper on her doorstep. “There’s a signing column to enter the new time machine! I’ll sign!” Sally was an energetic girl with blond hair and brown eyes. She desperately wanted to be known, yet she was humble. It was great that opportunities came towards her all the time. She once signed for a swimming contest and got last place. Then she participated in a spelling bee but couldn’t get any spelling right. This was her only chance in her childhood to be famous. She signed her name and dragged her friends to do the same with their name. She waited eagerly for the scientists to announce the winners. After about a week the results came in.

During that week, the only thing that Sally could think of was the time machine. She thought of it when eating dinner. She thought of it when playing with her friends, (They played games about them visiting different years of the 1900’s.) She thought of it when she was taking a bath. She had dreams of visiting time machines. It was all Sally could think about.

She got so excited when she glanced at the clock for two reasons. One, it was related to time. Two, it was her countdown to tell her when the time machine would open for her. She daydreamed of her and her friends going in the machine. One night, she even dreamed of her and her friends getting awarded a Nobel Prize.
