Chapter 1

The piercing ring of Samantha’s desk phone sliced through the cacophony of furious typing and hushed conversations permeating the open office layout. She grimaced, recognizing the harsh summons from her boss’s extension.

“You’d better take it,” Carl, her office mate, remarked without looking up from his computer screen. “Sounds like Stevens is on the warpath again.”

Samantha exhaled slowly before lifting the receiver. “Samantha Wilkins speaking.”

“Get in here now,” the gruff voice of agency partner Paul Stevens barked. The line went dead with an abrupt click.

She abandoned her half-drafted email and wove through the maze of cubicles toward the corner office. Paul’s door stood ajar, and she could make out the silhouette of his towering frame beyond the frosted glass pane.

“You wanted to see me?” she ventured, rapping her knuckles on the door frame.

Paul swiveled in his leather chair, leveling an intense gaze that made Samantha’s chest tighten. His salt-and-pepper hair was disheveled, as though he’d been running his hands through it anxiously.

“Close the door and have a seat,” he directed in a clipped tone.

Samantha complied, sinking into the rigid visitor’s chair opposite his desk. An ominous silence hung between them as Paul leaned back, steepling his fingers across his trim abdomen.

“We’ve got a situation, Sam,” he said at last. “A big one that could make or break us with our top client, DelVante Holdings.”

Samantha felt her pulse quicken at the name of the premium lifestyle conglomerate. They were the kind of white whale account that haunted every agency’s dreams. Losing them could cripple Mason & Richards entirely.

“What happened?” she asked, struggling to keep her voice steady.

Paul exhaled, his shoulders sinking beneath the weight of whatever burden he carried. “You know that massive rebrand DelVante’s been planning across all their properties? The one forecasting a complete overhaul of their image and market positioning?”

She nodded, recalling the feverish pitches the agency had made to land that very campaign. It was meant to solidify DelVante as a global luxury trendsetter for a new generation of affluent consumers.

“Well, after our ads and brand book were rolled out in Europe...” Paul grimaced, “the rollout has been an unmitigated disaster. Focus groups showed the creative totally missed the mark and is being trashed as ‘outdated’ and ‘culturally tone-deaf.’”

A cold knot formed in Samantha’s stomach. DelVante’s CEO was rumored to have a notoriously short fuse.

“They’re panicking at the potential PR nightmare,” Paul continued gravely. “So DelVante’s demanding an emergency summit with us at their global HQ - in Rome.”

Rome. The word immediately conjured visions of Samantha leading intense strategy sessions in some sleek, modern boardroom. Not exactly her dream Italian getaway.

“We’ll be working directly with their top marketing team to do a complete reboot and relaunch in Europe, effective immediately.” Paul locked eyes with her. “You’re heading up the assignment and our team on the ground, Sam. No arguments.”

Her mouth went dry at the enormity of the responsibility being thrust upon her. Coordinating an entire international rebrand from scratch, under crushing time constraints, for their make-or-break client? It was the kind of high-wire act that routinely ended careers.

“But...why me?” she blurted out. “Shouldn’t one of the senior partners lead this? I’m just a mid-level creative manager.”

A rueful chuckle escaped Paul’s lips. “That’s precisely why I’m tapping you, Sam. The rest of us greybeards were the ones responsible for this colossal misfire in the first place.”

His expression turned solemn again. “This campaign will need a totally fresh vision and perspective to breathe new life into it. And frankly, you’re our sharpest rising talent perfectly suited to be that new voice.”

Samantha felt her cheeks flush at the compliment, even as her head spun. This was the biggest make-or-break opportunity of her career - and it was terrifying.

“I’m honored by the faith you’re putting in me, Paul,” she replied carefully. “But what about my other accounts and workstream? I can’t just drop everything to relocate indefinitely to-”

Paul raised a palm, cutting her off. “This is your sole priority now, Sam. I’m clearing your plate of all other responsibilities so you can dive in full-bore in Rome.”

She opened her mouth to protest further, but he silenced her with a hard stare. “This is non-negotiable. The Mason & Richards brand is hanging by a thread with DelVante, and you’re our best shot at saving it.”

His words were like a bucketful of ice water cascading over Samantha, snapping her from the daze of denial. She was really doing this - putting her entire career on the line.

“When do I leave?” she asked at last, trying to project more confidence than she felt.

“Three days,” Paul replied simply. “Start prepping whatever personal affairs you need to handle. Then assemble whatever junior team members and resources you’ll require in Rome.”

He stood, signaling the conversation’s end and gesturing toward the door. “I’m counting on you to pull off a miracle for us with this, Sam. Don’t make me regret entrusting you with Mason & Richards’ future.”

The weight of that statement slammed into Samantha with dizzying force as she exited Paul’s office. A lead role in one of the highest-stakes accounts in the agency’s history. Staggering professional risk and pressure. And all while being whisked off to an unfamiliar country halfway across the globe.

As she navigated back through the buzzing office toward her desk in a daze, only one thought echoed through Samantha’s mind.

What had she just gotten herself into?
