A chance encounter
Olivia smoothed down the skirt of her gold silk gown for what felt like the hundredth time that evening. As guests began filing into the grand ballroom, she greeted them with practiced grace and enthusiasm, hoping her nerves didn't show. Four long years of sacrifices had led to this moment - if she succeeded in wooing donors tonight, new opportunities could finally lift her out of poverty.
Across the room, the Joker slipped unseen through a side door, irritation growing at the obscene displays of wealth surrounding him. He had no interest in mingling or making small talk, only in assessing the best target for his next bombastic crime. As his pale eyes swept dismissively over ostentatious jewels and fur wraps, a flash of shimmering gold amid the dreary colors caught his attention.
When his gaze fell upon Olivia's radiant form, something foreign and uncomfortable clenched in his chest. Her emerald eyes sparkled with passion and purpose so rarely seen in this city, and the lovely smile curving her rouged lips seemed genuine - a novelty to one so accustomed to masks. Intrigued, he lingered in shadow to observe her.
Olivia finally felt her nerves settle as familiar faces from her museum days approached with congratulations and promises of future support. She was truly in her element discussing artistic movements and fundraising strategies. But a prickling on the back of her neck told her eyes were upon her, examining in a way that made her skin heat despite the cool evening air. When she turned to find the source, a shock of chalk white hair and haunting green eyes held hers from across the room.
What mysterious stranger was this, regarding her so piercingly yet keeping himself apart? Before she could think further on it, a thunderous explosion rocked the building.
The Joker grinned maniacally at the chaos erupting, screams of the pampered elite music to his ears. But amid the panic, one thought persisted - he had to get to the golden girl before she was trampled. Lunging forward, he snatched a stunned Olivia into his arms and pulled her tightly to his chest, his distinctive laugh ringing out over the din.
"Fear not, little bird! Our evening has only just begun!" Before she could protest, he whisked her away into the smoky fray, the first act of a chance encounter that would change their lives in ways neither could imagine.
