Chapter 1
There has always been an undercurrent of unease felt by most humans. Documented throughout the ages as the anticipation of a future threat, now known simply as anxiety and dealt with through the biting of nails or medication to numb the fear.
Of all the understanding gained on this disorder, not once was it considered that just maybe there was a future threat worthy of worrying a millennia worth of mankind about. Perhaps somebody or something was trying to warn mankind. Don't become placid, don't assume safety in this world and definitely don't assume that all the creatures and monsters written about in books are fantasy...
Then they came. The Daonnan, and they showed mankind what true fear and unbridled brutality can do to a world. Appearing without warning in the once Great cities of mankind. A calibrated and coordinated attack that left billons dead in the span of a few weeks.
In one of those now fallen cities, surrounded by half collapsed skyscrapers that stretched impossibly high and fell like dominos all around. Was a woman. Those who knew her in the city, called her not by her name, but by her vocation. The Preacher. And in all that turmoil and death, she stood on a fallen car in Times Square and chanted her familiar prophecies. Her words were ignored by all but one, an ancient Vampire who stood bathed in the blood and viscera of mortals.
But what that Daonnan didn't know, and what he heard The Preacher prophases, was the arrival of his kind heralded the arrival of another. One who had slept in the realm between realms for millennia, frozen in time. This One would wake long dormant genes in Mankind, and re-establish balance between the two waring species.
But first, she had to grow up.
