Prologue

“Clara, do hold still,” her maid, Mrs. Ellis, chided gently as she adjusted the intricate lace on Clara’s gown. The gown, a delicate creation of pastel blue silk, accentuated her slender figure, the color mirroring the clear skies visible from the tall windows of her dressing room.

“I know, Mrs. Ellis, but it’s all so suffocating sometimes,” Clara sighed, her eyes meeting those of her maid in the mirror. “Each stitch feels like a chain.”

Mrs. Ellis, with a smile that hinted at understanding far beyond her station, replied, “But a beautiful chain, my lady. Remember, this season is not just any—it’s your debut, and every eye will be upon you.”

As the daughter of the Marquess of Ashford, Clara was well aware of the expectations placed upon her. The social season was not merely a series of balls and garden parties; it was a marketplace for matches, where titles were weighed, and fortunes were negotiated. Yet, her heart lay elsewhere—in the strokes of paintbrushes and the swirl of colors on a canvas. Art was her true passion, but one she could only pursue in stolen moments, far from the prying eyes of society.

The sound of hooves and carriage wheels on gravel announced the arrival of a visitor, pulling Clara from her reverie. She glanced out the window to see her friend’s carriage approaching the drive. “Helena is here” she chimed.

“Quickly Mrs. Ellis see if Madeline is ready, I shall be at the drawing room with Helena,”

Descending the grand staircase, Clara greeted her friends in the foyer before the butler could announce a formal arrival. Their laughter and chatter filled the air, a balm to the solemnity of the Ashford Crownshire house.

“Clara, you look absolutely radiant!” Helena exclaimed, her eyes sparkling with sincerity.

“Thank you, Helena. Any word from Rosette yet?” She grabbed her dear friend’s hand and led her to the drawing room.

“Indeed, she has sent me a letter and I received it just this morning -!” Helena revealing the letter as though it is a treasure.

“What did you receive this morning?” Madeline entered the drawing room.

“A letter from Rosette!” Helena repeated enthusiastically.

“I am most eager to hear it” Clara beamed sliding on the chair to give room as Madeline glided to the space as though her footsteps were dancing. “Imagine the adventure she must be having!”

Outside, the gardens beckoned, a riot of color beneath the gentle sun, mirroring the possibilities that lay ahead. Spring in Eldoria was a time for new beginnings, perhaps, just perhaps, it would be a season of unexpected promise.
