Her Mirror

I was looking at the room, which was somehow mine, but this girl I kept seeing throughout the day called it her room. She even says that I belong to her, but I doubt that. If I belong to someone, why does that person look at me when they need me and won’t even care about my being the rest of the time? From where I saw it, this was a spacious studio room loaded with books in one corner; she is a bibliophile.

It’s been two years since I moved into this room, and since then, most of my time has gone looking at her. She is a charming person with a beautiful soul and smile, but she doesn’t look good when she cries. I love the mole near her belly button and the middle of her back. I have seen her and known her in every possible way possible.

Recently, she started bringing a guy home, but I don’t get good vibes from her boyfriend, and I don’t know how she would react if I told her this. I can’t talk to her, even though she keeps talking to me; I can’t.

Today, I was in the room idling my time when the door unlocked. It was her boyfriend with another girl; this guy had the guts to bring another girl into her girlfriend’s room. What unfolded further was very disturbing for me. I wanted to yell at them and throw them out of this room, but I was helpless. He kept bringing different girls for the next three days, and I kept hating myself for being unable to do a thing and hating this guy for breaking the trust of such a beautiful soul.

When she returned, I had to do something to tell her what had happened here, even if it meant breaking my silence. I removed my speaking seal and finally summoned all my courage, called her out. So, as soon as she heard her name, she froze in her place. She looked around but couldn’t spot the voice. I called her again, and this time, she noticed me and walked over. I could see her shocked face; I knew she thought she was hallucinating, but I had to talk.

‘Hi, please don’t be scared, but it's true that I can speak, hear, and see everything,’ I said.

She screamed aloud and kept looking at me like I was a monster. I kept requesting her to calm down. I couldn’t touch her, or I would have hugged her tightly until she calmed down. I could tell she was trying to figure out if there was a tape around me to prove that it was a prank. I told her it wasn’t, and she looked at me again.

But in me, all she could see was herself. I was her mirror, after all.

‘Is this a joke, or am I exported to Snow White’s story? How can you speak?’ She demanded.

‘I was a magician’s experiment, which he thought failed and sold me off. Little did he know that I was a success and gained a sense of my own. I can’t move but feel, hear, and see everything.’ I explained.

‘So, if you were spellbound, why are you speaking now?’ She asked.

‘I had to remove my speaking seal because I wanted to tell you the truth, something which you should know before your pathetic boyfriend arrives to fuck you.’ I said annoyingly.

‘Excuse me?’ she said shockingly.

I knew what was running in her head well and accepted that I had seen everything. She was feeling embarrassed and naked. I comforted her and asked her to sit and listen to me carefully. I told her everything I saw and could see how broken she felt. I told her the names of the girls he had brought in and what happened in the past week. I told her to check her dustbin if she didn’t believe me as he threw the condoms there but never took them away. I told her to check under the bed to find the bracelet a girl dropped when he thrust her hard.

I saw tears rolling down her cheek silently as she found the proofs, but I was helpless as I couldn’t console her. All I could do was talk to her and nothing else. When the doorbell rang, she looked angry and pissed. She got up and washed her face first and then unlocked the door. He entered the room and tried to hug her. But before he could do that, she slapped him hard. Before he could react, she snatched his bunch of keys and took out the key to this room. They had a huge fight, and she showed him the proof. When he had nothing to justify himself, she pushed him out of the house and cried awhile.

When she calmed down, she looked at me, and we both remained silent for a while. She grabbed the bottle and drank a few sips of water from it. She stood before me, and I somehow knew what was running in her head.

‘Can you change forms as well?’ she asked.

‘If I could, I would be hugging you right now.’ I replied.

She smiled, and I felt relieved; her smile was always beautiful.

‘So, you have seen everything?’ she asked.

‘Can we not talk about that? Why do you want to embarrass yourself?’ I asked, and she covered her face.

‘I need to find a cover for you from now on.’ She said.

‘Why? What is there to hide anymore when I have seen everything.’ I said.

‘Isshh… Yuck… Shut up,’ she said.

And we both laughed…
