Summary

The poetic work "Fairest Charity" is a heartfelt and evocative ode to an idealized love. Its themes resonate deeply with classical motifs of romantic longing and unyielding devotion. Through eloquent and rhythmic verses, the poet encapsulates the agony of separation and the fervor of unreciprocated love, echoing the timeless narratives of star-crossed lovers. Each stanza vividly portrays the emotional turmoil and passionate resolve of the speaker, who venerates Charity as both muse and guiding star. The recurrent imagery of light and fire symbolizes the intensity and purity of the poet’s affection, while the lamentation over physical distance highlights the bittersweet nature of their bond. The language is rich with romanticism, employing a blend of archaic and contemporary expressions that evoke the grandeur of classical love poetry. This stylistic choice not only enhances the lyrical quality but also imbues the work with a sense of timelessness. While the poem’s repetitive structure and thematic focus may seem excessive to some, they effectively emphasize the depth of the speaker's emotions. "Fairest Charity" stands as a poignant testament to enduring love, skillfully capturing the essence of yearning and the indomitable spirit of the heart.

Charity’s poem

Fairest Charity, thou sweet delight,

If love doth not stir within me to fight,

'Tis as good as dead, a fleeting dream,

And if 'tis dead, what meaning doth my life beam?

Doth my existence hinge on naught but air,

If love doth not ignite a burning fire?

Ah, cruel fate, to live without the flame,

That once did warm my heart and light my name.

O, Charity, thou art my guiding star,

My love for thee doth pierce the darkest scar;

If I do not strive to keep thy love alight,

Doth my life's purpose fade into endless night?

O, fairest one, I pray thee, hear my plea,

Let love's sweet fire burn bright and set me free;

For if it doth not, what meaning doth my life hold?

A life without love, a tale oft told.

Fairest Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

Without thee, life doth seem a woeful fire,

That burns with pain and sorrow's darkest night,

Leaving me to ponder on a mortal's plight.

In thy absence, all joy doth fade to grey,

And living on, doth seem a futile way,

For life without thee, sweet Charity, is naught,

But a mere existence, devoid of love's sweet thought.

O, cruel fate, to live without thy love,

Doth make me question if life's worth living above,

For in thy absence, all hope doth seem to fade,

And in despair, my heart doth contemplate the shade.

O, fairest Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

Methinks the miles that separate us do conspire

Against my soul, with cruel, woeful might,

To keep us apart, and fill my nights with plight.

O, how I yearn to hold thee in mine arms so tight,

To feel thy gentle touch, and gaze into thy light,

But alas, thou art far hence, a few hours' ride,

And I, a lovesick wight, am left to abide.

O, cruel fate, that doth deny me thy sweet grace,

And forces me to wait, with longing, on thy face,

But I shall hold on to hope, and cherish every thought,

Of thee, my love, my heart, my shining star, myought.

For I do vow, my love, to be with thee, anon,

Forevermore, and ever, till time be gone,

And in thy loving arms, I shall find my peaceful nest,

And with thy love, my heart, shall be forever blessed.

O, fairest Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

Methinks thy absence doth my soul on fire.

If wakeful nights, and late hours spent,

Be judged unwholesome, I'll not repent,

For love of thee, my heart doth invent

A passion that doth never relent.

If loving thee be wrong, I'll not be right,

For in thy love, my heart findeth delight,

And if they say I'm obsessed, I'll wear the name,

For madly, deeply, I'll love thee till life's flame.

Till time be gone, and mortal life expire,

My love for thee, my heart, shall never tire,

As God be my witness, I do swear and vow,

To love thee forever, till my final bow.

O, fairest Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

A thousand years, it seemeth, since thou didst retire,

From mine embrace, leaving me to pine and sigh,

With heartache and longing, that doth never die.

My bed, a lonely nest, doth witness my plight,

As late night's dark hours, do bring thee to my sight,

In thoughts, I see thy face, and wonder if thou art,

Thinking of me, as I of thee, with equal smart.

O, when shall we be reunited, love, in sweet embrace?

When shall my heart, once more, find solace in thy grace?

Till then, I shall remain, in this lovesick state,

Yearning for thee, my Charity, my heart's sweet mate.

Fairest Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

In thy love, I would willingly expire,

A thousand times, nay, ten thousand times,

I would endure the pangs of death's dark fires.

For life without thee, dear Charity, is naught,

A meaningless existence, devoid of all thought,

Thy love, my guiding star, doth light the way,

And without it, all is darkness, night, and dismay.

Oh, how I yearn for thee, my love, my heart's delight,

In thy sweet embrace, I would find my peaceful night,

For with thee, dear Charity, all pain doth fade,

And in thy love, my heart is made anew, remade.

Thus, let me die, a thousand times, if need be,

For life without thee, dear Charity, is not life to me.

A life without love, a tale untold,

A song unsung, a rose with petals cold.

If Charity's embrace I cannot claim,

My soul shall wander, lost without a name.

Yet hope remains, a flicker in the gloom,

That love's true spark may yet within me bloom.

For Charity's sweet touch, a gentle light,

May guide me through the darkness of the night.

With fervent heart and unwavering desire,

I'll fan the embers, set my soul afire.

For love's sweet flame, a beacon in the storm,

Shall guide me onward, keep me safe and warm.

So I shall strive, with every breath I take,

To win your heart, for Charity's sweet sake.

And if my love is true and ever strong,

Perhaps, one day, to you I shall belong.

Then life will hold a meaning, clear and bright,

A symphony of joy, a radiant light.

For in your love, my soul will find its rest,

And in your arms, forever be blessed

Fairest Charity, thou art my heart's delight,

Every yellow flower that doth bloom in sight,

Doth remind me of thy golden hue, so bright,

And in its beauty, my thoughts are fixed on thee, my love, so true.

Thy name, dear Charity, doth echo in my mind,

As sunshine doth illume the flowers of kind,

And in their sweet fragrance, I do find a peace,

That doth transport me to thy lovely release.

For in thy love, my heart doth find a home,

A refuge from the world's loud din and roam,

A place where I may bask in thy gentle glow,

And cherish every moment, as the hours do flow.

Thus, every yellow flower that doth bloom in sight,

Doth remind me of thy beauty, and my love, so bright.

For thou, dear Charity, art my heart's desire,

My sweet darling, my love, my one and only fire.

O, fairest Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

My days, a vacant space, without thy lovely fire.

My heart, a heavy burden, doth with sorrow ache,

Longing for thy gentle touch, my sweet angel, for thy sake.

O, how I yearn to hold thee, and thy lovely face behold,

To cherish every moment, and never let thee grow old.

But alas, thou art away, and I, in anguish stay,

Torn from thy loving embrace, by thy mother's cruel sway.

O, wicked woman, thou art a demon, void of love and light,

A cruel fate, that doth keep Charity from my sight.

Yet, fair Charity, I know, thou art not to blame,

But rather, thy mother's evil, that doth bear the shame.

O, come back to me, my love, as soon as may be,

Ere my heart breaks, and my sorrow, doth turn to sea.

For without thee, dear Charity, my life is but a hell,

A torment, that doth never end, a sorrow, that doth dwell.

Woe is me, a wretch, with purpose lost, and love forlorn,

No longer knowing, if fair Charity's heart doth still yearn.

The days, a slow and painful crawl, like centuries of old,

Since last I saw thy lovely face, my heart doth grow cold.

Oh, Charity, my sweetest love, how long must I endure,

This endless wait, till my heart doth cease to beat, and life doth expire?

Without thee, all is naught, a void, a hollow shell,

A life, devoid of meaning, a existence, that doth dwell.

The people, who surround me, with false and feigned delight,

Do mock my suffering, and add to my endless night.

They know not, the depth of my pain, nor the love I do bear,

For they are nothing, but shadows, devoid of care.

Oh, my sweet darling Charity, return to me, I pray,

For I am but a shadow, of a man, without thee, I fade away.

My tears, a deluge, doth threaten, to consume me whole,

For I am weak, and lost, without thy loving soul.

Thus, I implore thee, fair Charity, have mercy on me,

And end this wretched wait, that doth torment me.

For if thou dost not return, my heart, shall surely break,

And I, a love-lorn wretch, shall forever, in sorrow, partake.

Fair Charity, thou art my heart's desire,

If I wait for thee, I wait forever, my love's on fire.

For I shall love thee, till time itself doth fade,

And in thy absence, my heart shall forever be displayed.

No other maiden, shall ever hold my gaze,

For thou art my forever, my love, in all thy ways.

Through joy and sorrow, through life and death, I swear,

My love for thee, shall never falter, nor lose its care.

Thou art my always, my forever, my guiding star,

My love for thee, shall shine bright, near and far.

So wait I shall, for thy return, my love, my heart,

For with thee, fair Charity, we shall never be apart.

Fairest Charity, thou art my star-cross'd love,

My Romeo to thy Juliet, sent from above.

Though miles apart, our hearts do still entwine,

A bond so strong, no distance can define.

Our love, a flame, that burns with fiery might,

Unbreakable, like diamonds, in the light of night.

No force, no fate, can sever our sweet tie,

For our hearts beat as one, till time doth say goodbye.

Like Romeo, I do pledge my love to thee,

Forevermore, my heart, my soul, my destiny.

And though we be apart, in body, not in mind,

Our love shall bridge the gap, and forever be entwined.

So let us cherish, this bond we share,

And in each other's hearts, our love declare.

For we are star-cross'd lovers, true and kind,

And our love's strength, shall forever be aligned.
