Chapter 1

Amelia Tucker sat at her small wooden desk, gazing out the window at the bustling streets of London below. It was a typical rainy day in the city, and the soft pitter-patter of raindrops against the glass provided a soothing backdrop to her thoughts. She had been working on her latest article for the travel magazine she wrote for, but her concentration was faltering. She sighed and took a sip of her now lukewarm tea, deciding to take a break.

Just as she was about to stand up and stretch, the sound of the doorbell echoed through her flat. Startled, she glanced at the clock. It was unusual for her to have visitors this early in the afternoon. She walked to the door and opened it to find a postman holding a large envelope.

“Miss Tucker?” the postman inquired, glancing at the name on the envelope.

“Yes, that’s me,” Amelia replied, accepting the envelope.

“Have a good day,” the postman said with a nod before turning and heading back down the hallway.

Amelia closed the door and stared at the envelope in her hands. It was heavy, with a return address she didn’t recognize. Curious, she walked back to her desk and carefully opened it. Inside, she found several documents and a handwritten letter. She unfolded the letter first and began to read.

*Dear Miss Amelia Tucker,

I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Milan Novak, and I am an attorney representing the estate of your late grandmother, Katarina Markovic. It is with deep regret that I inform you of her passing. However, I am pleased to inform you that you have been named the sole beneficiary of her estate, which includes a villa located in Cavtat, Dalmatia.*

Amelia’s eyes widened in surprise. A villa? She didn’t even know she had a grandmother in Dalmatia. She continued reading.

*The villa, named “Villa Katarina,” has been in your family for generations. It was your grandmother’s wish that you inherit it and, hopefully, restore it to its former glory. Enclosed you will find all the necessary legal documents and information about the property.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or need assistance with the inheritance process.

Sincerely, Milan Novak Attorney at Law*

Amelia put down the letter and leaned back in her chair, her mind racing. A seaside villa in Dalmatia? She had always been curious about her family’s history, but her parents had rarely spoken about it. They had passed away when she was young, leaving her with more questions than answers. And now, out of the blue, she had inherited a property from a grandmother she never knew.

She picked up the legal documents and began to skim through them, trying to make sense of it all. The villa was indeed located in Cavtat, a coastal town in Croatia. There were descriptions of the property, a map, and details about its current condition. According to the documents, it was in need of significant repairs.

Amelia’s mind buzzed with excitement and apprehension. This was a huge decision. She loved her life in London, but the idea of exploring her family’s past and restoring a beautiful villa by the sea was incredibly tempting.

Her phone buzzed on the desk, snapping her out of her thoughts. She picked it up and saw a message from her best friend, Sarah.

Sarah: Hey, lunch at our usual spot?

Amelia quickly typed a response.

Amelia: Yes, but I have something big to tell you. See you in 20?

Sarah: Intriguing! See you soon.

Amelia grabbed her coat and umbrella, stuffed the documents back into the envelope, and headed out the door. The rain had lightened to a drizzle as she made her way to the cozy café where she and Sarah often met. The café was warm and inviting, with the aroma of fresh coffee and pastries filling the air.

Sarah was already there, seated at a corner table. She waved as Amelia walked in.

“Hey, over here!” Sarah called out, her eyes twinkling with curiosity.

Amelia smiled and joined her. “Hi, Sarah. Thanks for meeting me on such short notice.”

“Of course! You know I love a good mystery. What’s going on?” Sarah asked, leaning forward eagerly.

Amelia took a deep breath. “You won’t believe this, but I just found out that I’ve inherited a villa in Dalmatia from my grandmother.”

Sarah’s jaw dropped. “A villa? In Dalmatia? That’s incredible! I didn’t even know you had family there.”

“Neither did I,” Amelia admitted. “I received this letter and these documents today.” She handed the envelope to Sarah, who began to leaf through the papers.

“Wow, this is amazing. A seaside villa... it sounds like a dream,” Sarah said, her eyes wide with excitement. “Are you going to go check it out?”

“I think I have to,” Amelia replied. “I need to see it for myself, and it might be a chance to learn more about my family. But it’s also a bit overwhelming. The villa needs a lot of work, and I don’t know the first thing about renovations.”

Sarah smiled reassuringly. “You don’t have to figure it all out right now. Take it one step at a time. Go see the villa, and then you can decide what to do. And who knows, maybe this will be an incredible adventure.”

Amelia nodded, feeling a bit more confident. “You’re right. I think I need to do this. It’s a part of my history, and it might be a chance to start something new.”

They spent the next hour talking about the possibilities, with Sarah offering encouragement and practical advice. By the time they finished their lunch, Amelia felt a sense of determination growing within her. She was going to Dalmatia.

As they walked out of the cafe and strolled down the bustling streets of London, Sarah continued to offer her support.

“Alright, Amelia, let’s make a list of what you need to do before you leave,” Sarah said, pulling out her phone and opening a note-taking app.

“Good idea. I need to inform my boss, arrange for someone to look after my plants, and book my flight,” Amelia replied, ticking off the tasks in her mind.

“And don’t forget to pack appropriately. The climate there is different from London. You’ll need lighter clothing and a good pair of walking shoes.”

Amelia nodded. “I can do that. I think I’ll start with my boss. I need to let him know I’ll be away for a while.”

Sarah grinned. “Knowing you, I bet he’s going to be supportive. You work so hard; you deserve this break.”

The next day, Amelia walked into her boss’s office. Mr. Johnson looked up from his desk, his brow furrowing slightly as he saw her determined expression.

“Amelia, come in. What’s on your mind?”

She took a deep breath. “Mr. Johnson, I’ve recently inherited a property in Dalmatia from a relative I didn’t know I had. I need to take some time off to sort things out.”

Mr. Johnson leaned back in his chair, considering her words. “How much time are we talking about?”

“I’m not entirely sure, but I’m hoping a few weeks will be enough to get things settled.”

He nodded slowly. “You’ve been a valuable member of our team, Amelia. I understand this is important to you. Take the time you need, but keep us updated on your plans. And if you can, try to work remotely when possible.”

Relief washed over her. “Thank you so much, Mr. Johnson. I really appreciate it.”

The following morning, after a restless night filled with excitement and anticipation, Amelia sat at her kitchen table, clutching her phone tightly. With a deep breath, she dialed the number for Novak & Sons, the solicitors who had sent her the letter about the inheritance.

After a few rings, a receptionist answered. “Novak & Sons. How may I direct your call?”

“Hello, this is Amelia Tucker. I received a letter and documents regarding an inheritance from my great-aunt, Katarina Markovic. I’d like to speak with Mr. Novak, please.”

“One moment, please,” the receptionist said before transferring the call.

Amelia’s heart pounded as she waited, the seconds feeling like an eternity. Finally, she heard a polite voice on the other end of the line.

“Good morning, Novak & Sons. Milan Novak speaking.”

“Hello, Mr. Novak. This is Amelia Tucker. I’m calling about the inheritance.”

“Ah, Miss Tucker. I’ve been expecting your call. I trust you received the documents we sent?”

“Yes, I did. Thank you. I’d like to make arrangements to come to Cavtat as soon as possible.”

“Of course. I can arrange a meeting for you at our office later this week. Will that work for you?”

“Yes, that sounds perfect. Thank you, Mr. Novak.”

“Excellent. We look forward to meeting you in person, Miss Tucker. Safe travels.”

“Thank you, Mr. Novak. Goodbye.”

Amelia hung up the phone, her heart racing with excitement.

Over the next few days, Amelia busied herself with preparations for her trip. She booked a flight to Croatia, arranged accommodations in Cavtat, and packed her bags with a mix of excitement and nerves.

Sarah stopped by the night before her departure, a bottle of wine in hand and a smile on her face.

“Can you believe this is actually happening?” Sarah said, pouring two glasses.

“I know, it still feels surreal,” Amelia replied, taking a sip of wine. “But I’m ready. I think.”

“You are more than ready, my friend. You’re about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime,” Sarah said, raising her glass in a toast.

“To new beginnings,” Amelia said, clinking her glass against Sarah’s.

“To new beginnings,” Sarah echoed, her eyes shining with excitement.

As they sat together, laughing and reminiscing about old times, Amelia felt a sense of gratitude wash over her. She was grateful for Sarah’s unwavering support, for this unexpected opportunity, and for the chance to discover more about her family and herself.

As the morning sun cast its golden rays over the city, Amelia stood outside her flat, her suitcase packed and ready by her side. The bustling streets of London seemed to hum with excitement, mirroring the anticipation coursing through her veins.

With a final glance around her apartment, Amelia took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment. This was it—the beginning of her journey to Dalmatia, to the villa that held the key to her family’s past and her own future.

As she stepped out onto the pavement, the crisp morning air filled her lungs, invigorating her spirit. She hailed a taxi, the anticipation building with each passing moment. The drive to the airport was a blur of sights and sounds, but Amelia’s mind was clear, focused on the adventure that lay ahead.

At the airport she checked in her luggage and made her way to the departure gate. As she settled into her seat on the plane, Amelia felt a sense of calm wash over her. This was the moment she had been waiting for—the moment she would finally set foot in Dalmatia, the land of her inheritance.

As the plane taxied down the runway and soared into the sky, leaving London’s skyline behind, Amelia couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement. She closed her eyes, imagining the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea, the quaint streets of Cavtat, and the mysterious villa that awaited her.
