Chapter 1: "Inherited Shadows"

Roxy Scarlet stood at the edge of her family’s vast estate, the imposing mansion casting long, foreboding shadows across the manicured lawn. The air smelled of roses and secrets, both equally intoxicating. Adjusting the collar of her leather jacket, she felt the rough fabric against her skin and heard her father’s voice echo in her mind, a haunting refrain: “Blood runs thicker than water, Roxy.”

But Roxy had always been drawn to the water—the vast, endless ocean beyond the estate’s iron gates. It whispered promises of freedom, of escape from the legacy that clung to her like a second skin. The Mafia—the Punta e Uccidi—had shaped her life, its tendrils winding through every decision, every heartbeat.

She glanced back at the mansion, its windows dark and inscrutable. Her mother’s portrait hung in the grand foyer, a woman who had danced with danger and paid the price. Roxy’s reflection stared back at her—a tangle of contradictions. The scarlet birthmark on her wrist marked her as both heir and rebel.

Inside the mansion, the atmosphere was tense. Her father, Dominic Scarlet, had called a meeting with his most trusted lieutenants. Roxy had eavesdropped on enough of these meetings to know that they were plotting something big, something dangerous. The Mafia's influence stretched far and wide, their operations ruthless and unforgiving. She had seen the results of their “business dealings” first-hand—people who crossed the Mafia didn’t just disappear; they were made examples of, their fates serving as grim warnings to others.

Tonight felt different, though. There was an urgency in her father's voice that she hadn’t heard before. Roxy edged closer to the study door, straining to hear.

“Our rivals think they can encroach on our territory,” Dominic was saying. “We need to send a message. No one disrespects the Scarlet Syndicate and lives to tell the tale.”

Roxy’s heart pounded as she listened. She knew what that meant. Bloodshed was imminent. Her family’s violent ways had always been a source of inner conflict for her, and tonight, the weight of it was unbearable. She felt suffocated by the inevitability of the life laid out before her.

A loud crash echoed from inside the study, followed by angry shouts. Roxy’s instincts screamed at her to flee. She backed away from the door, her pulse racing. Suddenly, the door burst open, and one of her father’s men stormed out, nearly knocking her over.

“Watch it!” he snarled, his eyes blazing with fury. Roxy stumbled back, her heart in her throat. She turned and ran down the hallway, her mind a whirl of fear and determination. She had to get out, away from the violence, the bloodshed, the shadows that threatened to consume her.

Roxy sprinted towards the cliffs, her breath coming in ragged gasps. The moonlight barely pierced the dense canopy of trees, casting eerie shapes on the ground. She could hear footsteps behind her—relentless, predatory. Panic threatened to overtake her, but she forced herself to focus. She had to reach the cliffs, where she could find a way down to the water and potentially lose her pursuers.

Suddenly, a hand grabbed her wrist, yanking her the underbrush. She struggled, her fear morphing into adrenaline-fueled fury. She lashed with her hands trying her best to defend herself but was pushed to the ground.

It was Mark. "Let me go, you're hurting me," she groaned. He held a knife to her face.

"You're going back with me."

No. No way that was going to happen.

With all the strength she could muster she pushed him. He only fell flat and was about to get up again but she grabbed his hair and as he was screaming from the pain, took the knife from his hand.

With the sound of pursuit growing louder, she ran walking through a hidden path leading down the cliffside. The descent was perilous, but the urgency of the situation gave her the boost she needed. Finally, she reached a secluded cove where a small boat awaited, its engine humming softly. Probably belonged to one of her dad's visitors. Well, she couldn't help it now.

As she sped away from the shore, Roxy felt the weight of her predicament settle over her. As the coastline faded into the distance, she couldn’t shake the feeling that her life had just been irrevocably changed. She had left without a moment's thought, with no planning. How sure was she that life would be better now?

She shoved the thoughts away from her head. They were not helping. Remain positive. She had been through tougher times before now and she knew it. She could get through this one.

She was tired. All she wanted to do was sleep but who then would direct the boat? Besides she wasn't safe until she had seen land and that would take hours. Her arms hurt where Mark had held her. Damn him. She knew he'd still come back for her even if everyone else backed off. Why did he have to be so possessive?

Oh dear! This wasn't helping. The tears trickled from her cheeks. She never cried even when her dad had hit her. It was one of the training she had received – If you cried, the pain wouldn't go away, it would only increase. But this wasn't physical pain. To think your father had held you captive and very soon wants to kill you. Imagine him telling her blood was thicker than water! What did he know about that?

She paddled on in the darkness. If she didn't find somewhere safe to land and give in to sleep she'd probably be dead by daybreak. Speaking of daybreak, the sun seemed to be rising. She groaned. Well, she must paddle on. Life or Death.
