Prologue

“Please. Please, please. I can’t. I just -. You can’t leave me. I’m sorry. " Calliope pleaded with Gabriella. The shock of her betrayal had left her gasping for air. She had known it was coming but it was still a shock.

Gabriella stared back at Cali while showing no emotion. She had already begun the process of divorcing her. To leave her for someone who had already shown the power needed to win this war. Yes, they’d been forced together to try to bring out each other’s powers, but as fate would have it, they were no closer to pulling them to the surface.

“Caliope. It’s done. I’ve already turned in the paperwork to the Commission. As of tomorrow morning, we are done.“, Gabriella said as she finished packing her bag. “Maybe next time you’ll have luck. I love you. I do. But you’re...you’re...”

“Fucked." Cali said. Cali couldn't believe it. She knew she only had a few more years to Awaken or she’d be executed by the Commission. As warriors bred to fight, they had until they turned 30 to Awaken to begin their service. Cali was already 27 and yet to Awaken.

Beginning from the time you turn 21, the Commission assigns you a life partner to bring the magic to the surface. Unfortunately, after six years, Gabriella has yet to bring them out. No matter how many sessions were used to train. Never a sliver. Gabby had already manifested. Her Fire was supposed to call Cali's to the surface.

Nothing.

“Maybe your new partner will be able to bring it to the surface. I’m sorry. I am. But I won’t risk losing you anymore.“, she said as she grabbed her coat and strode towards the door. “Good luck, Cali.”

And she was gone.

Calliope was alone.
