Summary

Run. Keep on running. Don’t stop and don’t look back. Those words kept on repeating in Jess’s head as she ran through the forest that was being invaded by the darkness of the night. Her heart was pounding in her chest about to make a run for it as well. Her breathing dramatically increased as she kept on running, but she knew that he would find me no matter how fast I ran. The leaves and sticks cracked under her boots as she ran giving away her location to the madman. Jess had to make a plan and soon before… When she found refuge behind a tree and to catch her breath Jess heard him say, “You can’t run away from me, little girl. I’ll find you and when I do you will never see the light of day ever again. I will rip that privileged life away from you and when I am done with you, your friends will be next.” Shivers ran down her spine as he said through venomous words. Why had a psychopathic serial killer, who escaped from jail, picked me, but I would rather him take and kill me than any of my friends? Jess had to scrap together the little grace she had left in her to keep on running. The forest was only that big she would find a road or something eventually if she just kept on running and so Jess did. She kept on running. The cold air blew against her exposed skin when she took off in a run again. Lungs burned. Leg muscles ached. She wanted all of this to stop."

Jessica Brown was an enigma at Oakridge High School. She kept mostly to herself and only her inner circle knew of her parents’ job descriptions seeing as she did not want to draw attention to herself. But that nobody’s status was about to change at one of her friend’s birthday parties.

Speaking of the inner circle, it was an ordinary Monday morning. The group usually met at someone’s locker or their usual spot outside at one of the many tables, but this particular morning was different. Out of the five of them, three met up. One of the friends’ birthdays would take place on Friday, so they planned to take her to a lake house that one of the friends, Lee’s family owned. There they would surprise the birthday girl with a small party of just the five of them.

They had planned all week to get everything in order and ready for Friday night. They had their hands full, juggling between keeping their schoolwork up to date and not spilling the surprise, because Ashley, the birthday girl was on to them asking all sorts of questions. It was hard but it would be worth it in the end.

On Wednesday during lunch, they all decided to ask Ashley what she would want for her birthday seeing as we all bickered on what to get her and did not want to get her double of something.

“So… Ashley is there a sir then something that you would like for gosh I don’t know… a gift per se?” the tall, curly, brown-haired boy also known as Dylan asked dramatically as they took in their seats at a lunch table. The girl shook her head and said, “There is no need for gifts. All I want is to spend some quality time with the people around this table and my family this weekend. That is the only thing I wish for.” She ended with a big graceful smile.

But Dylan does not take no for an answer. “You are such a prude, you know. I will have my answer before lunch is over and you all will bear witness.” He said the last part with a finger pointed at all of them and determination all over his face. By the time lunch was over Ashley had made something up to get him off her back. She just wanted to spend some time with her friends and her family, but they all were still going to give her separate gifts from all of them whether she wanted it or not.

Thursday night after supper Jess was sitting in the living room with her parents, watching the local news like any other night. She was so cot up texting with her friends about Friday night and Friday in general that she only listened with half an ear. The news reporter was babbling about a prison transport that was scheduled for Friday morning.

After the news, Jess said goodnight to her parents and went up to her room, did her usual night ritual, finalised the plans for the next day and got in bed.

A few hundred miles from The Brown’s house was a prison. High double fences with bob wire surrounded the grounds and thick brick and concrete surrounded the inmates.

Only the foot steppes of the guards could be heard in the dark hole the inmates found themselves in. On the second floor right at the end housed a cell with an evil man. He wanted revenge. And a bloody one at that.

He had fallen asleep with a smile on his face, knowing that tomorrow the transport would go wrong and he was back to being a free madman.
