Chapter 1

My knuckles dug into one attacker’s stomach, then the extra force from my elbow sent him sprawling onto the ground. I sighed as I straightened from my defensive stance, dusting off my hands with relief. I wished they would just leave me alone since it’s not like I incited their anger on purpose. I just don’t want to be bullied because of my face and name.

“Teddy!” shrieked Callum Rider, my somewhat irritating but lovable best friend. “Oh, my cute teddy bear! C’mere!”

“What is it?” I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck while he bounced towards me like an excited baby goat.

Callum grinned. His curly, dark brown hair was pulled back in a ponytail with a few strands framing his cheeks. His stunning green eyes sparkled with excitement as he grabbed me in a hug. We were about the same height, although he was an inch shorter than me at five-foot-six. Callum absolutely loved to dress up with cute clothing and accessories.

I had more of a feminine face and frame, despite the fact that I do have muscle definition from my training. I’m still slim overall, though, so that gives the illusion that I’m weak (if not powerless).

“Teddy, will you go out with me tonight?” he asked, trying to use his pouty lips and sparkling emerald-green eyes to win me over. “You know the club I went to last night? The bouncer is such a stud. I want to snag him so badly!”

I rubbed my face. “Cale, I don’t like those places. You know that.”

He whined and squeezed my body tighter. “Please, Teddy? Please? Please!"

I groaned and pried his arms off me. “Fuck off, Cale. Do you remember the last time you asked me to do something like this?”

Callum pouted. “Y-yeah,” he whispered.

“Then don’t ask me to do this again. This is the last fucking time. Do you understand?” I growled, gripping his ruffled pink top.

Callum was quite startled, but his face broke into a grin. “Yeah! Thanks, Teddy! You’re the best.”

I grunted when he hugged me again. “Sure, whatever. Where is it and when do you want to go?”

“I’ll show you the place right now because we’re gonna go tomorrow night.”

I sighed as he dragged me down the sidewalk. Our classes didn’t start again until Monday since today, Friday, was a holiday. Honestly, I had just wanted to enjoy my day in peace. But while trying to meet up with Callum because he wanted to talk, some guys from our old high school jumped me and did their best to drag me behind a building. But they failed miserably and left me with lightly bruised knuckles.

My focus moved to Callum’s back as he dragged me behind him. He was wearing incredibly feminine clothes as always, but that was his charm. I never minded it. But my own style was very different from his bright and cheerful colors. I prefer darker colors, but who knows when my preference will change. Life is kind of funny that way.

My current favorite color is wine, which is a luxurious-looking dark red. Callum’s own favorite was a pastel pink. In a lot of ways, we are very different, which does cause problems at times. But we work through it all together.

“We’re here!” he whisper-yelled, dragging me to a corner.

I peered around it like him, then sighed when I saw the big man. “I hope he’s a good match for you, Cale. I don’t want you to get hurt again.”

“That’s why you’re coming with me.”

I snorted. “It’s going to be hard to protect you from a beefy guy like that.”

Callum hummed. “I know, but you’re crafty and strong.”

“Are you saying he’s dumb?”

“No!”

I sighed again and moved away. “Does he even know you? Does he know your age? Like does he know your real age and not just how your appearance makes you look to others?”

Callum turned around and leaned on the brick wall, so his beautiful dark brown skin gleamed in the sunshine. He smiled at me. “He knows me because he’s Jackson’s friend. My brother would never hang out with trash. You know that, Teddy.”

I rubbed my face with a sigh, dropping my hands. I lifted my right hand, then stared at my very pale pinkish skin tone. Callum’s dark skin seemed to make my skin contrast even more. His glittery fingernails sparkled when he placed his hand on top of mine since they caught the mid-afternoon sun’s rays.

“I know you’re worried, Teddy. And I’m really grateful to you for that concern.” he whispered, curling his arms around my waist. He pressed his cheek to my shoulder, hugging me tightly.

I sighed again and hugged him back. “I’m sorry, Cale. I’ll try to play along. I really don’t want to go after tomorrow, okay?”

“I know and I promise I won’t ask you to go again. At least you don’t have to go inside the club.”

“Mm, true.”

“Let’s go hang out at Charleston’s.” he suggested, so I nodded and let him lead me out of the alley to go back the way we came.

Charleston’s was a popular hangout for teens and college students, so I know I’ll run into some people from our old school and local college. I used to be so terrified of going there, but now I don’t really care anymore. I actually kind of like the idea of pummeling some guys to get rid of my negative emotions if they choose to attack me first.

“Hey, Teddy?”

I blinked, then looked up from the sidewalk to meet my best friend’s gaze. “What?”

Emerald-green eyes were filled with concern as Callum asked, “Are you okay?”

I cracked my neck, making him wince. “Yeah, I’m fine. If anyone bothers you, let me know.”

Callum’s smile made me return it. “Thanks, Teddy!” he exclaimed, which made me chuckle and shake my head.

I opened the door for him and he sashayed to the music that spilled out of the establishment. I snorted as he immediately went to the dance floor to join the group of fifteen already there. I stepped inside and pulled out my wallet as I walked up to the counter where Tori Walker, a friend from college, worked part-time on the weekends and most holidays.

She turned with a bright smile. “Oh, Teddy!”

“Yep, and Callum’s here. He ditched me for the dance floor.”

Tori grinned at me. She moved her long braid to her other shoulder, but a few wavy tendrils of dirty-blond hair curled below her jaw. Her light brown eyes sparkled.

“Yeah, as always. Two of the usual?”

“You’ve got it.”

While Tori made our usual drinks, I pulled out the exact amount and pocketed my wallet again. We exchanged the goods and I thanked her with a smile. I found an open booth and slid into it, then set Callum’s drink next to mine on the table.

While I slowly sipped at my peach pie milkshake, I eyed the dance floor. Callum was grinding his pure white booty shorts on two guys, which made me roll my eyes. From the looks on their faces, it was obvious that Callum’s large ass would have another couple of admirers.

I watched people for a while without feeling much of anything, but I caught sight of a tall guy who had just walked in. He had an air of arrogance and was clearly looking for a fight. His sand-colored hair was a bit curly but mostly wavy as it fell to his shoulders. The guy also had deep brown skin with a golden tone, which made me wonder if his hair was dyed. Even so, I couldn’t help but think that the color suited him really well. His body type was very well-muscled, but still not overly bulky. It showed me that he clearly had been working out longer than me. I wondered if he would be a good challenge, but it’d be unfortunate to ruin the face of the most gorgeous/handsome guy I had ever seen.

I had never seen him around before, though. Maybe he moved here recently?

I took another mouthful of my milkshake and looked away from the guy before he could notice me. Although I doubted that would be the case.

My hair was always called strawberry-blond by others, even though it didn’t look like the usual hair color associated with that name. It was naturally whitish gold-blond hair with strawberry-pink lowlights. My hair color often brought attention to me, if it wasn’t because of my face, name, and or slim frame.

Subconsciously, I had started clenching my jaw while thinking about my appearance. I relaxed and continued watching the dance floor.

Callum was just stepping off of it as he looked for me. I waved my hand and his drink, so he practically sprinted towards the booth. He was about to leap into my arms when a person moved between us. I swallowed thickly as I looked up and saw the back of the guy I had been looking at earlier.

“What’s your big deal!” shouted Callum. “Let me get my drink, you fat oaf!”

I grimaced. Callum had a knack for causing trouble.

“Fat, huh? How amusing. What if this fat guy shows you how far he can fling your scrawny ass?”

Callum snorted. “Fuck you. Get out of my way.”

I watched the guy’s arm twitch. “Move, Cale!”

As if by instinct, Callum hopped away. The fist pushed through the air, and I swung myself around to slam the bottoms of my shoes into the backs of the other guy’s knees. He stumbled and almost fell, but he caught himself on another table.

I smirked, then moved off the booth’s seat. I literally kicked the sexy guy’s ass and he practically slammed his face onto the floor with a grunt. I chuckled as I pressed my left knee into his back, then buried my fingers in his sand-blond hair and made a fist. I pulled his head back and noticed a thin drip of blood from his nose. I smirked when I saw his spaced-out expression.

“You’re awfully weak,” I murmured. “Next time, don’t play tough and don’t you dare try that shit again.”

I shoved his head back down and moved away from him. Callum leapt towards me and rubbed his head on me like a cat while he giggled. “You’re so cool, Teddy.”

“Yeah, whatever. Do you want to leave?”

“Sure. Thanks for the drink, by the way.”

“You’re welcome. I have my part-time job in a little while, so I’m going home for now. Want to come over?”

Callum beamed. “Can I spend the night?”

“Grandma would love to have you over again. She keeps asking when you’ll come over next.”

“Aww, I love your grandma. She’s so nice to me.”

“Unlike me?” I pouted, grabbing the last of my milkshake before we passed by the table.

“No, you’re way nicer than anyone else!”

I stuck my tongue out at him as we left the building and he smirked. My eyes widened. Before I could retract my tongue, Callum slid his own over it. My cheeks burned as he kissed me hard, his tongue stroking every sensitive part of my mouth. I grew weak, but he wrapped an arm around my waist. When he broke the kiss, my skin was on fire.

Callum smirked again and pecked my lips. “Thanks, Teddy.”

I waved him off once I got in control of my body. “N-no need to thank me.”

“Aww, my little Teddy is too cute.”

He chuckled with a flirty wink, but he laughed when I tried to smack his ass. Callum bounced away, sipping on his drink.

I rubbed my cheeks with one hand while we walked down the sidewalk. Callum and I were a little closer than most best friends. We also got each other off when we were pent up, so I guess some would call us sex friends. We weren’t in love with each other, but we did love the fact that we were so close in our relationship as best sex friends.

“Hurry up!” exclaimed Callum, looping his arm in mine. “I wanna eat your cookies!”

“You better brush your teeth properly after all this sugar.”

“Yes, Mom.” He pouted, then laughed. “I’m so happy you’re my best friend.”

“You’re in it for the sex too, though.” I reminded with a chuckle, tickling his side with my free hand.

Callum squeaked, then knocked his hip against mine when I burst into laughter. “You meanie! You know I don’t like being tickled. And of course I am. It’s just that good.” he said, then groaned with a visible shudder while I blushed.

He was so much more open and promiscuous than I was, and probably more than I could ever be. I admired Callum for that confidence I often found myself lacking, but I was trying to relax and loosen up a bit.

Callum leaned closer and kissed my ear. “I will loosen you up nicely tonight, my sexy Teddy.”

I blushed a bright red. “D-did I say that aloud?”

“Yep!”

“Oh, shit.”

“You don’t say.” He knocked his head against mine with a smile. “And you should definitely relax. You’re so cute and sexy at the same time. Dare I say that you’re super hot when beating up other people?”

I rolled my eyes. “Yeah, right. But thanks, Cale.”

“You better believe it, Teddy. One of these days, some guy is going to approach you because of it.”

I quirked my lips down while I stared into his sparkling emerald eyes. “Don’t speak that aloud. It might come true.”

“Oh, it will, though. Eventually.” stated Callum, quickening our strides. “And I’m looking forward to the day you can confidently say that you’re as sexy, cute, and beautiful as I know you are as my best friend.”

My cheeks burned and I hid my face for a moment. “Thanks, Cale.”

“You’re welcome!”
