A new start

The tram rattled and swayed, a familiar rhythm I’d grown to love in my new home of Melbourne. Sunshine poured through the windows, warming my face as I watched the city come alive. People hurried along the sidewalks, their faces a blur of expressions – excitement, worry, determination. Buildings old and new stretched towards the sky, a jumble of styles and stories.

I glanced down at my watch, a nervous flutter in my stomach. Today was the day. My first day at MA&Co. I’d heard so much about this media giant, the place where dreams were made and careers were launched. And now, I was on my way to be a part of it.

As the tram approached South Melbourne, I could see the company’s headquarters rising above the surrounding buildings, a towering glass structure that seemed to pierce the clouds. It was intimidating, but also exciting. This was where I was meant to be.

I stepped off the tram and took a deep breath, the crisp morning air filling my lungs. I smoothed down my shirt, adjusted my tie, and reminded myself to stay calm. This was just another job, another opportunity to learn and grow. But deep down, I knew it was so much more than that. This was my chance to prove myself, to make a difference, to leave my mark on the world.

I walked towards the building, my heart beating a little faster with each step. I pushed through the revolving doors and entered the grand lobby, my eyes adjusting to the cool, dim light. The air smelled of polished marble and expensive coffee. I took it all in, a mix of awe and anticipation swirling within me.

This was the start of a new chapter. My chapter. And I was ready to write it

The elevator doors slid open with a gentle whoosh, revealing a sprawling office space bathed in warm light. Straight ahead, a young woman with a cascade of blonde curls manned the reception desk. She was cradling a phone between her shoulder and ear, her other hand clutching a vibrant green smoothie. A wide smile spread across her face as she animatedly chatted with whoever was on the other end.

“Dennis Simon?” A crisp voice cut through the air, drawing my attention to a woman in a tailored navy suit. She extended a hand, her smile professional and welcoming. “Janice from HR. Welcome to MA&Co.”

I shook her hand, returning her smile. “Thank you, Janice. It’s a pleasure to be here.”

“Let’s get you acquainted with your new home,” she said, gesturing towards the office beyond the reception desk. “It’s a bit of a maze, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time.”

The receptionist’s chatter faded as I followed Janice deeper into the office. My eyes darted around, taking in the unexpected decor. This wasn’t your typical corporate space. It was a time capsule of mid-century cool.

The office unfolded before me, a kaleidoscope of colour and vintage charm. Polished wooden floors gleamed underfoot, reflecting the soft glow of pendant lights fashioned from recycled wine bottles. Exposed brick walls, painted a pristine white, served as a backdrop for an eclectic collection of artwork: pop art prints, abstract paintings, and framed magazine covers from decades past.

A wave of nostalgia washed over me, the familiar scent of old books and vinyl records tickling my senses. This wasn’t your typical corporate space, all sterile lines and minimalist furniture. MA&Co had embraced a quirky, almost bohemian aesthetic that seemed to invite creativity and free thinking.

My attention was drawn to the receptionist, who had momentarily abandoned her smoothie to gesticulate wildly with her free hand. “Oh my god, you guys, the tension in this scene is insane! Like, I can’t even breathe! I swear, this author knows exactly how to push all my buttons.” Her voice echoed through the space, a mix of excitement and breathless anticipation.

I glanced at Janice, who merely rolled her eyes with a knowing smile. “Don’t mind Kelly,” she said, ushering me further into the office. “She’s always engrossed in some new literary adventure.”

Janice led me through the maze of desks and workstations, finally stopping in front of a compact cubicle nestled near the back corner. “This is your space,” she announced, a hint of pride in her voice. “Make yourself at home.”

With a reassuring smile, she added, “I’ll be back in a jiffy to introduce you to your team. Take a few minutes to settle in.” She handed me a stack of paperwork and a company-branded mug, then disappeared back into the labyrinth.

I sank into the ergonomic chair, the soft leather a welcome contrast to the bustling energy of the office. My eyes darted around, taking in the details of my new workspace: a sleek monitor, a clutter-free desk, and a corkboard adorned with motivational quotes.

A wave of self-doubt washed over me. Could I really thrive in this fast-paced, creative environment? Was I capable of making a meaningful contribution to this renowned company? I took a deep breath, steeling my resolve. I reminded myself of the countless hours I’d spent honing my skills, the sacrifices I’d made to get to this point. I wanted this job. I needed this job. And I was damn well going to make the most of it.

With newfound determination, I opened the top drawer of my desk, ready to unpack my belongings and embark on this new chapter of my life.

The hum of conversation and clatter of keyboards drew me toward the kitchen, a welcome distraction from the paperwork piled on my desk. I needed to refill my water bottle, a simple task that promised a brief escape from the overwhelming newness of it all.

As I filled my bottle at the sink, a voice chirped from behind me, “Hey there! You must be the new analyst, right?”

I turned to find the receptionist, her blonde curls bouncing as she flashed a megawatt smile. “Kelly Mason,” she introduced herself, extending a hand already dusted with cheesy nacho crumbs. “Welcome to the madhouse!”

I chuckled, shaking her hand. “Dennis Simon. Pleasure to meet you, Kelly.”

“So, Dennis,” she continued without missing a beat, her eyes sparkling with curiosity, “where are you from? What kind of analysis do you do? Have you worked in media before? Oh, and have you tried the veggie wraps from the cafe downstairs? They’re to die for!”

Before I could answer a single question, another figure joined us at the sink. “Kelly, you’re not supposed to be eating at your desk again, are you?” A tall brunette with a no-nonsense air raised an eyebrow, her tone a mix of amusement and reproach.

“Oh, Laura!” Kelly exclaimed, her voice rising an octave. “Have you seen the latest episode of Bridgerton? That cliffhanger! I’m dying here!”

Laura chuckled. “You and the rest of the female population, Kel. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but I’ve heard it’s juicy.”

Kelly turned to me, her eyes wide with excitement. “Have you watched it, Dennis?”

I blinked, momentarily stunned by the abrupt change in topic. “Uh, no, I haven’t actually,” I stammered, still trying to process the whirlwind of information and questions.

Kelly’s jaw dropped, her eyes widening in mock horror. “You haven’t? Oh my god, Dennis, you’re missing out on the most amazing show ever! It’s got romance, drama, scandal, gorgeous costumes, and the hottest Duke you’ll ever lay eyes on.” She leaned closer, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “Trust me, it’s totally binge-worthy.”

I glanced at Laura, who winked conspiratorially. “She’s a bit of a superfan,” she whispered, before excusing herself with a wave.

Just as I was about to drown in a sea of Bridgerton trivia, Janice reappeared, a bemused expression on her face. “Everything alright here?” she inquired, her tone a gentle reprimand.

“Dennis hasn’t seen Bridgerton!” Kelly wailed as if I’d just confessed to a heinous crime.

I chuckled nervously, glancing at Janice for help. She raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips.

“Perhaps,” she interjected smoothly, “you can learn a thing or two about our target audience here by watching Bridgerton, Dennis. Consider it market research.” She winked at me before turning to Kelly. “Alright, ladies, let’s not scare the new guy off on his first day.”

Janice steered me away from the kitchen, Kelly’s enthusiastic voice fading into the background as she launched into a passionate debate about some fan theory. “I can’t believe Lady Whistledown is actually...”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Kelly knows more about the Bridgerton family than her own.” muttered Janice under her breath, a hint of amusement in her voice.

“Your induction session is booked with Sarah Thompson, our Sales Manager,” Janice continued her voice a mix of professionalism and amusement. “She’ll be by later to pick you up.”

I nodded, making a mental note of the name. Sarah Thompson. Sales Manager.

Janice paused, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of her lips. “Just a heads-up, Dennis,” she said, lowering her voice slightly. “Every man on this floor is terrified of her.”

My eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Terrified? Why is that?”

Janice simply shrugged, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “You’ll find out soon enough.”

She glanced at her watch, a subtle signal that our tour was coming to an end. “Sarah will come to your desk when she’s ready for you. In the meantime, feel free to explore and settle in. Welcome to the team, Dennis.” With a final smile, she turned and walked away, leaving me to ponder the enigmatic Sales Manager and her fearsome reputation.
