Finn Hunter stood in front of the mirror, adjusting his tie for what felt like the hundredth time. His reflection stared back at him, a mix of anxiety and anticipation in his eyes. “Finn, are you almost ready?” Jason, Finn’s best friend, called from the living room. “Yeah, just a sec!” Finn called back, taking a deep breath to steady himself.
Jason chuckled as Finn emerged, his jacket in his hand. “You’re going to knock ’em dead tonight, buddy.”
“I hope so,” Finn replied with a nervous grin. “Thanks for pushing me into this, Jason; I really appreciate it.”
“You’ll thank me later,” Jason said, clapping him on the shoulder. “Now go get ’em tiger!”
It had been nearly two years since his divorce, and the thought of dating again was both thrilling and terrifying. His friends had insisted on setting him up, creating a profile on a dating app, and finally finding a match; Leonard Reid, a freelancer from a town called Omen, seemed the perfect choice. They both shared a passion for photography, albeit with very different perspectives.
“Tonight’s going to be great,” Finn muttered to himself, taking a deep breath. He put on his jacket and headed out the door. His mind swirling with what-ifs and possibilities.
The restaurant was dimly lit, creating an intimate atmosphere that did little to calm Finn’s nerves. He spotted Leonard immediately—a tall, lean man with a sharp jawline and intense blue eyes. Leonard stood up, a warm smile spreading across his face, as Finn approached.
“Finn, right?” Leonard extended his hand. “I’m Leonard. It’s great to finally meet you.”
They shook hands, and Finn felt a surprising sense of ease wash over him. As they settled into their seats and started talking, the initial awkwardness melted away.
“So, Finn,” Leonard began, his voice smooth and engaging. “Your passion is photography, just like mine, but what’s your favorite type of shot to capture?”
Finn smiled, leaning forward. “Well, I love finding beauty in everyday moments. Sunsets, candid smiles, vibrant landscapes -there’s so much joy in the world, and I want to capture that. I hope, one day, to show my work in a big gallery! But for now, it’s just a hobby. What about you?”
Leonard nodded, his eyes glinting with a different kind of excitement. “I get that. For me, it’s about uncovering the raw, unfiltered truth. The ugliness, the pain. That’s where the real stories are.”
Finn raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Interesting. So, do you ever feel overwhelmed by all the darkness you capture?”
Leonard’s smile widened slightly. “Not overwhelmed. Energized. Every shot is a new discovery, a new layer peeled back from the human condition.”
Finn chuckled nervously. “I guess we balance each other out, then. Light and dark.”
Leonard’s eyes seemed to pierce through him. “Or perhaps we’re two sides of the same coin, both searching for truth in our own ways.”
Hours flew by, and before Finn knew it, Leonard was inviting him over to see his work. Curiosity piqued. “Sure, I would love to see your work.” Finn agreed. They drove through winding roads, the night growing darker and more foreboding. Leonard’s house was on the outskirts of town, a solitary structure surrounded by dense woods. Finn felt a slight unease as they pulled up, but he brushed it off, attributing it to the unfamiliarity.
