Prologue

This is Book 3 of a series that begins with “Into the Wild: A Werewolf Love/Need Story”; however, the first book is not required for the continued story. Note that Book 1 is only available on the Inkitt app. Book 2 is called “Into the Fire”.

The human camp was full of movement like a disturbed ant mound.

“General Stotts!” a harried-looking woman in uniform rushed up, dodging other people and equipment. She saluted the General. She was youngish, had a nice rounded body, and strong features.

“What is it, Lt. Jones?” he said, hoping whatever it was wouldn’t add too much to his work. He brushed his blonde buzz and looked at her. He seemed to be frowning only because the cut on his lip made it appear so. He sighed. He only hoped he didn’t look as old as he felt or sounded. He was only 55, but the weight of responsibility was heavy on him. Being in a constant, moving, borderless war was wearing on them all.

“We found a human female in the old prison,” she said out of breath.

“Alive? Locked up?”

“She’s alive. It does not appear that she was a prisoner there. We found her in the infirmary of the prison. She appears to have suffered an overdose,” she continued.

“Ah, do we still have some Narcan?” he asked quickly.

“No need. She was able to self-administer it. She’s in and out of consciousness, but the medics think she’ll be alright in a few days.”

“Anyone we know?” Stotts asked, wondering if he should have asked that.

“Ah, no, sir. There’s been no sign of Jodi…” she started, but Stotts waved her off.

“Of course, no worries, lieutenant. Well, see that she’s looked after. I think we should make our way towards Charlestown and see how they are doing. Re-equip as we can. We need supplies and reinforcements.”

“What about the wolves? Shouldn’t we give chase?” asked Jennifer Jones.

“No. I want the camp searched carefully for munitions and supplies, though. Send Monroe over here, will you?”

“Yessir, right away!” Jones double timed it on her way out of his mobile command unit. He really had to stop thinking about Jodi. She was gone, that’s all there was to it. Maybe this new woman… Oh, what was he thinking? Two days with Jodi had completely warped his focus. He had thought a little fucking would clear his head and relax him. No luck. He missed her much more than he could have imagined feeling for a “one night stand”. He couldn’t go down that road again. There was too much work, too much riding on humanity’s victory or at least survival in these times.

This time, they had at least broken up the camp of wolves here. They had killed a few, most had run off. A huge black bastard they had found dead before they’d even got close which indicated some internal strife among the werewolves which suited Stotts just fine.

There had been a grisly trail of disembowled wolves that had lead them to this camp. Internal disputes were not his problem.

Humans were his business. Getting humans through these times into some sort of a future was his only goal. No one knew what that future would look like. Yet.
