PROLOGUE:
FINNIAN
“We have a problem,” Kymar, my twin brother, stormed into my office, a brown envelope in hand as he took a long, heavy stride toward me. Panting heavily, he said, “Another attack has been made on the northeast of the pack. People were killed, and over thirty people were badly injured.”
Kymar let out a frustrating grunt the moment he reached my desk, slamming the envelope onto the free space in front of me before slumping into the seat across from me.
I let out a deep sigh, picked up the envelope, and carefully pushed my glasses up on my nose before dragging my gaze up to the envelope as I pulled out a piece of paper from inside it.
“A petition from the council to dethrone us if we don't find a solution to the random attacks on our pack?” I raised an eyebrow, my head snapping up to see Kymar throwing his head back against the seat. In frustration.
He looked stressed, way too stressed for someone who had been appointed as the pack's Alpha just seven months ago.
“God. Finn.” Kymar growled, pressing his index fingers on each side of his temple. “Just why the fuck did father have to die? Why the heck did he have to die, leaving all these shitty problems behind for me—us?”
I couldn't help but let out a shaky breath as I dropped the envelope on my desk. I grabbed my head in both palms and shut my eyes for what felt like a minute before slowly raising my head to stare at my brother.
“What are we going to…”
Kymar shook his head, forcing me to swallow the rest of my sentence. “You know I thought I could do this?” he chuckled, tugging at his tie as if it was choking him. “I thought I could end the problem that took father's life? But I think I might have overestimated myself. I can't do it. It's too much for me.”
“Are you giving the throne up?” I gasped, panting heavily as I stared at my brother.
Kymar didn't say anything for a while. He just stared at me, giving me that look he always had on his face when he was having self-doubt.
“I’m afraid that's what's going to happen.” he said slowly.
No! This was so not going to happen. Kymar was the strongest and the boldest among the two of us. He didn't give up easily. For Kymar to say he was giving up, he must have been broken from the inside.
“Father fought so hard to put an end to the mass murderer in this pack.” I swallowed. My throat hurt as I kept holding back the grunt that was eating me up. “Father fought so hard for this throne. He sacrificed a lot to lead this pack. We can't just give up just like that.”
My chest tightened, anxiety eating up at my soul.
“You know…” Kymar chuckled, tear slipped from his eye and he hastily wiped it with the back of his hand. “I almost thought you took after mother, but I was wrong. You're just like Dad, always with the fucking pure heart.” he scoffed, grabbed a fistful of his hair and yanked it real hard that I could almost feel the pain.
“W—what are you trying to insinuate?” I stuttered, gulping down nothing.
“Why do you always care for people that doesn't give a shit about you?” he hissed out loudly. “Why bother about a thankless position anyway? No matter what we sacrifice these people would never appreciate it. So why should we sacrifice our lives?”
His shoulders jerked as he fumed in anger. Kymar didn't easily lose his composure around me. He was just frustrated and I could feel it.
“This is not just about us… Ky mar?” I said, releasing a deep breath. “This is about about our people, our pack.” I added, staring at my brother deep in the eyes.
Kymar hardly listen to people, even my father had his fair share before he died. If anything, the only person my twin brother listen to was me. And perhaps I could use my twin charm to have my way into making him listen to me. Again.
“Don’t give me that bullshit, Finn.” he sighed, pulling at the file and placed it in his front. Kymar read through the letter again like it was his first time reading it. “If the council think we're not doing our best, fuck them very much. They can dethrone us and claim the throne or give it to whoever they want for all I care.”
“That’s not going to happen.” I said firmly. Pressing my lips together as Kymar slowly raised his head to stare at me.
He let out a bark of laughter. Throwing his head to the back. He must have thought I was being foolish, but that wasn't the truth.
“Finn? God.” Kymar chuckled, placing his hands behind his back and rested his head on the headrest of the seat. “This is not one of the moments you try to act all saint, are you?”
“I really want you to listen to me.” I peeled off my glasses, dropping it atop the tons of files on my table. “Please. Just little to me. This is not a matter to take lightly.”
Kymar must have sensed the seriousness of my tone. He sat up and gestured for me to say whatever I wanted to say to him.
“The council have always wanted to dethrone father when he was still the Alpha, none of them like him for being a good man. We both know it.”
Kymar grunted so loudly. Shaking the ground beneath me. “Then let them have their way. They won. Whatever I don't care anymore.”
“We have to care. No, we must care. Father worked so hard for this.” I yelled, anger surged through me as I looked my brother dead in the eyes. “This is not you, Kymar. We can't let father's hard work into making this pack a safe haven for our people to go to waste.”
Kymar sighed, cursing under his breath as he pressed a finger to the bridge of his nose.
“What do you then suggest we should do? We've already lost a lot of our best men, and if the council think they can't do it, why can't we et them try?”
“If we let them try, this pack will be something of the past and even us we get hurt in the process. We’re in this together, no matter how you want to think of it.” I let out a puff of air, clenching my fists on my laps under the table. “We should seek help.”
Kymar scoffed, propping his elbows on the table. He leaned forward and said, “We are one of the best packs there is. Do you know why this pack is in the top five of the best packs? Because we have the best warriors and we are the best financially. There's no pack that has what we don't have. We can't get help anywhere; this pack is fucked!”
I let out a shaky breath, knowing that what I was about to say might send my brother into a rage. But I couldn't help it. “The Lycans are the best at everything,” I said. “They have warriors that are ten times better than ours. I think our best and only option is the Lycan king.”
Kymar jumped out of his seat and grabbed me by my shirt, pulling me out of my seat with force. His hold on my shirt trembled as he gritted his teeth. “We’re not mentioning that name. We are definitely not talking about that bastard. We don't need him.” he barked, his teeth clashing against one another as he let go of my shirt. Sending a deadly glare my way.
“I…” I gasped, panting heavily as I gathered my shirt to smoother it. I let out a shaky breath as I dropped my gaze to the floor like a child that was getting scolded by his father. “I might have sent a word to him, requesting for a meeting.”
Kyran grabbed his head and screamed so loud that I fear the wall might come crumbling down. “You did what?”
I moved back in fear. Kyran would never hit me, no he wouldn't do that. He had never done anything like that before but I couldn't tell with how angry he was right now. And how much more angry he could get for what I was about to say.
“The Lycan King, Riven, has approved my request and the meeting had been set for 8 a.m., tomorrow.” I gulped, dropping my gaze to my shaking fingers. “I’m sorry that I kept it from you, but I'm leaving for the Lycan pack tomorrow.”
