Chapter 1 - Stick to the Plan
King Mortus:
We’ve arrived at the ballroom, and I can’t hide my excitement as I turn to face my beautiful future bride.
“Here we are, dearest.” I proclaim.
“We’ve arrived.”
She looks from me towards the two large wooden doors and I can hear her as she sighs.
I can also sense her nerves from here.
I need to find a way to help her calm before we enter the ballroom.
There will be so many eyes upon us once we are in there; as the future rulers of all Vamperial City.
I need her at her best.
Suddenly a thought comes to me and I decide to go with it.
Now you might not think that vampires can be mesmerised by other vampires, but that’s where you’d be wrong.
Dead wrong.
We can be mesmerised by other vampires, but it depends upon the skill level of the one doing the mesmerising at the time.
With my skill level being so incredibly high, I could easily mesmerise Adella, a brand-new vampire.
And what’s better, she wouldn’t even have a clue that it had happened to her in the first place.
‘I’ll mesmerise her just to take the edge of her nervousness off.’ I decide.
“Adella, come, turn and face me.” I command her.
She turns to face me in question now with a slight frown.
“What is it?” she asks me.
“I just wanted to look at you one last time before we entered…” I lie.
And as I have her full attention, with her eyes locked upon mine, I activate my primal powers, with my eyes glowing brighter than before.
Her eyes remain open and unblinking as the mesmerising begins.
‘Remain calm. Compose yourself as regal and confident.’ I command her using my telepathic abilities.
And she opens her mouth to respond to me, still in her mesmerised state.
“Yes… master.”
Now she’s ready.
Breaking the connection, I watch as she blinks several times and frowns again, apparently confused as to what had just happened.
“Take my hand.” I command, holding it out for her.
She glances down at my hand before slowly reaching out to take it with hers as instructed.
Well, at least she can follow instructions.
As we both turn to face the doors, they are slowly pushed open and the room on the other side of them finally revealed…
Adella:
Something’s come over me… something that I’m not sure I can explain or make sense of.
I was massively nervous only moments ago before I arrived here at the ballroom, but now for some reason I feel a sudden surge of confidence and relaxation.
Not that I’m complaining.
I shouldn’t complain.
But still, I wonder how it came to happen, especially now as the doors part for us and Mortus leads me along by his side up onto the podium.
Down below us are countless bodies, each dressed in fabulous costumes and gowns and with every single one of them staring up at us.
Yes, every single one of them.
Some have the same red eyes as I do, while most others have blue irises.
I wonder just how many vampires the King himself has personally turned.
Just a passing thought.
“You’re doing well.” Mortus whispers into my ear with a smile as he faces the crowd and lifts his hand, waving majestically.
I’d do the same but I’m not sure if I should.
I don’t want to do the wrong thing here and embarrass myself.
Instead, I simply remain on his arm and by his side as he comes to stop before a giant staircase which leads down towards the giant ballroom floor.
To our right are a pair of throne seats and he catches me glancing at them.
“Soon, my dear.” he promises softly.
“Soon.”
I think he got the wrong idea from me… I just wanted to sit down.
Suddenly and with Mortus lifting his free hand in the air, the entire room silences as all eyes and ears are on us.
He then goes on to speak.
“Greetings to you all here this evening, and welcome to the royal ball.”
The room erupts in applause for a moment before it silences once again.
“It has been a long time coming but after centuries of endless searching, it seems I have finally found the woman who will become my bride…” he pauses, turning to face me proudly.
“Allow me to introduce you all to your future Queen and my soon-to-be wife, Adella Lord.”
Mortus grins as the audience applauds us a second time, this time for a lot longer than before.
He leans in and whispers to me again.
“Smile, my dear. This is your moment to shine.”
Honestly, I’m far too afraid to smile, being in a room filled with blood sucking vampires.
But I have to keep reminding myself that I’m now one of them.
As he pulls me closer, I plaster on a fake smile for everyone to see.
I’ll play along… for now anyway.
I can see the King’s three mistresses staring at me from across the room and boy do they look pissed!
‘Note to self – stay as far away from them as possible.’ I tell myself.
‘Especially that Kelly one!’
“Now, eat, drink and enjoy yourselves as you see fit.” Mortus proclaimed, finishing his announcement off with a brilliantly dashing smile.
Applause followed soon after, with everyone beginning to move about to do their own thing.
I watch as some gather into their groups to speak while others make a quick move for the buffet of… humans!?!
My eyes widen at the sight of the human servants currently chained up against the far wall with small tubes coming out of them!
Yes, they’re being used to drink from and I’ve never felt more sick in my entire life.
Holding my stomach, I don’t know what to do right now.
Part of me wants to instinctively run down there and begin freeing them all.
Another part of me wants to give it to Mortus for even thinking of doing such a thing before me!
But I know I must behave here tonight and as a single tear rolls down my left hand cheek, I lift my gloved hand and wipe it away with my finger.
Removing evidence of my sadness for their suffering.
‘These vampire sons of bitches!’
Then I wonder something completely off topic.
Would Zain have fed from them, if he were here with all the others this evening?
Is that how us vampires treat humans now?
Like live feeding stock?
“Adella?” the King’s voice calls me back to the here and now and I turn to glance at him in question as he continues.
“I was just asking you whether you would like something to eat or drink?”
My hand clenches down by my side in response as my mouth forms words.
“No, thank you.” I reply.
“I ate earlier.”
“Very well then. Go ahead and mingle, dearest. Just don’t go where I can’t see you.” Mortus warns, holding my hand and patting the back of it with his other hand before he then releases it.
“Of course.” I reply, smiling back at him.
He too smiles and nods his head, just as some rich looking nobleman comes up the stairs to speak with him.
And as their conversation begins, I decide to head towards the eight servants each chained to the wall.
I know it’s foolish, but I think that perhaps there is something I can do for them in their current situation.
Unfortunately, I only reach about halfway down the staircase when I’m approached by none other than Kelly herself.
She’s the new third mistress who took over after Tatiana left and she’s twice as nasty.
I swallow nervously as she stops in front of me with a plastered-on smile, I know is completely fake.
“Well, well… congratulations Adella.” she remarks.
“It seems you’ve managed to make your way to the top in such a short amount of time. I’m utterly impressed.”
‘I’m not sure what to say.’
I don’t want to piss her off anymore than I already have, but I’m also tired of her trampling all over me all the time.
“Kelly, nice to see you again.” I compliment.
It’s all I could come up with.
She sneers.
“You do know the only reason he’s marrying you is because of your euphoric blood, right? Don’t get ahead of yourself, dear.” Kelly warns.
“If anything should happen to you, he’d move on. Let’s hope that nothing does…”
And then leaving on that little note, she waltzes away with a devilish smile.
One that creeps me out.
