The Progenitor Virus. (Information
The Progenitor Virus, also known as the Mother Virus, was the first mutagenic virus ever discovered and became the foundation of Umbrella Corporation's most successful bio-organic weapon research. This virus was used as a basis for developing other types of viruses later on. The Mother Virus was discovered by Edward Ashford and Oswell E. Spencer in an attempt to enhance its effectiveness as a biological weapon. After the virus was modified by Dr. James Marcus, the Umbrella Corporation was founded by the three, with Spencer providing most of the funding to disguise the research they hoped to conduct. Dr. Ashford had high hopes for dramatic medical and scientific achievements with the study of the virus, but he died due to an infection with the Progenitor in 1968. Despite Dr. Ashford's death, his colleague, Dr. Marcus, would continue his research with the virus as previously planned. However, Dr. Marcus was much more interested in the effects the virus would produce when exposed to organic subjects, while Spencer planned to use the virus for military purposes.
This research would eventually begin to yield results, demonstrating to Marcus and Spencer that cells infected with the virus would undergo very violent and uncontrollable cellular changes with the host's gene mutation. This caused increased aggressiveness and accelerated growth in non-mammalian beings, while mammals exhibited several new qualities, including symptoms shown in the other subjects. However, the results were not suitable for Umbrella's plans, as the subjects proved to be ineffective and uncoordinated bio-organic weapons.
Studies conducted to date show that when the Progenitor Virus is administered to living organisms, violent cellular changes occur, leading to system collapse. Currently, no method has been found to control the organisms for use as weapons. It is clear that the better the cellular structure of the host, the more the virus enhances growth. I have conducted some experiments to find a solution. The Mother Virus was discovered by Oswell E. Spencer, and because of this, Umbrella Inc. was founded. Over time, Spencer's research was continued by Dr. J. Marcus. However, Dr. Marcus abused his power and had to be dismissed.
After Dr. Marcus came Dr. William Birkin. Dr. Birkin's experiments yielded many exceptional results, including the T-virus. It is expected that he will complete work on the more powerful G-virus in the near future.
Currently, research on the Mother Virus is being conducted in our laboratories around the world. We hope that in the near future we can discover new viruses.
