Chapter 1: Back in Town

There I was, walking to the shop, lost in my thoughts about how much I hated my job. The only good thing in my life was my dog, a loyal companion who never judged me. The sun was setting, casting a warm, orange glow over the pavement. As I walked, I noticed the familiar sound of a motorcycle engine growing louder. Turning my head, I saw my dad on his bike, heading straight towards me.

“What’s up, Dad?” I called out, forcing a smile.

“Nothing much, Tara. I need to tell you something,” he said, his expression serious.

“Sure, what is it?” I asked, my curiosity piqued.

As he was about to speak, the rumble of more bikes filled the air. I looked up to see my uncle and the rest of the gang approaching. They were like a pack of wolves, loud and intimidating. My heart sank a little, knowing this conversation was about to get interrupted. When I was about to turn back to my dad, another bike approached. My breath caught in my throat as I recognized the rider.

Blake.

“What is he doing here?” I asked my dad, trying to keep my voice steady.

“That’s what I wanted to tell you. He’s back in town,” my dad replied, watching my reaction carefully.

“A little too late for that, Dad. Who’s with him?” I said, trying to mask the mix of emotions bubbling up inside me.

“Some cheap chick, I guess,” he muttered, clearly unimpressed.

Blake dismounted his bike, his presence commanding attention even after all this time. The girl with him was striking, with a confidence that seemed out of place next to the rough edges of the gang. My mind raced with memories and unanswered questions. Blake was back, and nothing about it felt simple or easy.

I glanced at my dad, searching for some sign of what to do next. But he just shrugged, as if to say it was out of his hands. The rest of the gang dismounted, greeting each other with loud voices and backslaps. My uncle shot me a grin, oblivious to the tension I felt.

“Hey, Tara! Long time no see!” he shouted over the noise, walking over to give me a hug.

“Yeah, it’s been a while,” I replied, trying to focus on the present and not the past.

Blake and his new companion made their way over, and I couldn’t avoid him any longer. He looked older, more rugged, but still had that same intensity in his eyes.

“Tara,” he said, nodding at me.

“Blake,” I replied, my voice cool.

His companion looked me up and down, clearly assessing the situation. I felt a surge of protectiveness, not for Blake, but for myself. Whatever history we had, it was clear that things were different now.

“Nice to meet you,” she said, extending a hand.

I shook it, keeping my expression neutral. “You too.”

The gang settled into their usual banter, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that this was just the beginning of something complicated. My dad gave me a reassuring pat on the back, as if to say he was there for me. But as the night wore on, I knew that Blake’s return was going to stir up more than just old memories.

And I wasn’t sure I was ready for it.
