NAGARVADHU (part 1)

The entire city of Vaishali was decorated like a bride today, preparations were going on for a special festival. The festival of choosing the bride of Vaishali. Beautiful girls, one more beautiful than the other, had come, all the streets and the palace were fragrant with the aroma of expensive flowers brought from all over India. There was an atmosphere of happiness all around. Drums were being played in the entire city, the sound of which could be heard far and wide. There was a question in everyone's mind "Which Apsara will become the Nagar Vadhu of Vaishali?"

500 years ago, India was divided into small kingdoms and different kings ruled over them. In Vaishali city of Bihar, the king and ministers were elected by the people themselves. This was the time when the Magadh Empire was rapidly spreading across India but Vaishali was still far away from their hands.

In the same Vaishali city, in a small house, a sixteen year old girl Amrapali was also getting ready sitting in her small house. On hearing the sound of the drum, her whole body started dancing with excitement. But her mind was in a strange dilemma.

"Am I going to do something wrong? If I don't do this, my Guru will be insulted in front of everyone, and if I do, then the promise given to my mother will be broken. "Oh Mahadev, if I make a mistake, you will take care of it", Amrapali said to herself, gathering courage.

After putting flowers on her long, beautiful, thick hair, as soon as she looked in the mirror to apply kajal, her sharp eyes like those of a deer shone in the mirror. She had just picked up the ghungroos lying nearby and wore them when her father Mahanaman came into her room fuming with anger.Amrapali was shocked to see him.

She asked him in surprise, "Father, you have returned from the war?",

Mahaman stood in front of her! Sparks were pouring from his eyes. He said angrily, "Yes, I am back and now, you will not go anywhere." Saying this, Mahanaman slammed the door from outside and locked it.

Before Amrapali could say anything or protest, she was imprisoned in the room.

She started banging the door loudly and pleading to her father, "Father, please open the door, let me go."

"This door will not open Amrapali, I never thought that you will cheat me so much." Mahanaman had never scolded his daughter like this before!

Amrapali said crying, "Father, whatever punishment you want to give me, give it later, but right now it is very important for me to reach the royal palace, I have to participate in the dance festival."

"Until the festival is over, this door will not open and neither will you participate in the dance festival", Mahanaman was not going to bow down to Amrapali's stubbornness.

"Father, believe me, I have no desire to participate in the dance competition but I am helpless today, if I do not reach the palace on time, then the dignity of your friend and Vaishali's dance teacher Kumar Bhatt will be ruined! I have just come to know that the disciple whom he had prepared for years for this competition has suddenly disappeared", Amrapali tried a lot to convince Mahanaman but Mahanaman was not going to listen to her!

"If she is missing, will you dance in a crowded gathering?...Do you even know what will be the result?" After this, Mahanaman did not even stop to listen to his daughter's answer because he knew that if the people of Vaishali Nagar saw Amrapali, then that will happen from which Mahanaman had tried to save his daughter since childhood.

Mahanaman was very angry, he did not listen to Amrapali and left from there. As soon as he reached the mango garden and saw a swing on a mango tree, tears started flowing from his eyes! Cursing himself, he said, "You were born in this garden my child, for so many years I kept you hidden from the evil eyes of this world but despite wanting to, I could not keep you away from dancing and now this dance will become your misfortune, I wish.. at this time my friend and your Guru Kumar Bhatt could make you understand."

Amrapali was the only daughter of Mahanaman, he was an ordinary soldier. While serving the city, he was not able to take care and monitor his daughter, so he handed over 5-year-old Amrapali to his brother-like friend Kumar Bhatt and his wife Amba for care.

Just like the waning moon gradually grows with all its phases, similarly Amrapali's youth and beauty was also increasing every year as compared to the previous year, which was the reason of worry for Mahanaman as well as Kumar Bhatt and Ambe. And today the same thing was going to happen which they were afraid of.

Amrapali was shedding tears in her room when she heard a noise at the door. She thought in her mind "I knew....father will change his decision..after all it is a question of his friend's respect!"

Just then the door opened and there was surprise on Amrapali's face.

"Harshdev you??" Amrapali asked.

Harshdev was Amrapali's childhood friend. His face was completely red. He said in panic, "Yes, now let's go quickly before your father comes here." Amrapali looked at her small house once. This was her only world since childhood. Today for the first time she was leaving this world and going out! Seeing this her eyes filled with tears! She looked at Harshdev and asked "I am not cheating my father, right Harshdev?? "

Harshdev encouraged her and said, "What kind of deception? It is the duty of a daughter to protect the honor of her Guru and father!"

Wearing a veil on her head, Amrapali and Harshdev were passing through the market of Vaishali city at a fast pace when suddenly Amrapali's veil slipped and fell on the ground! Amrapali stopped and tried to lift her dupatta, but she felt as if a hundred pairs of eyes were staring at her.

"Such a beautiful girl, who is she?? Is she from Vaishali?" one man asked another looking at Amrapali in surprise.

Hearing this, the other replied, "No, I have never seen her in Vaishali before. She must be some dancer who has come to participate in the festival."

"She is very beautiful, she looks like an Apsara from heaven, I will not let her reach the competition, she will become my bride." Hearing this, the second man took out his sword and said, "She will go to my house, not yours. Do not try to stop me or else I will tear her apart." Before Amrapali and Harshdev could understand anything, 50 such swords were raised in the market and people started fighting to take Amrapali to their respective houses. This... this is what Mahanaman and his friend Kumar Bhatt wanted to save Amrapali from since her childhood. In Vaishali, people used to fight among themselves to make a beautiful girl their bride and that is why the tradition of Nagar Vadhu was established in Vaishali... so that the most beautiful girl of the city becomes the bride of not just one person but the entire city.Amrapali was also going to participate in the dance competition for Nagar Vadhu but she was unaware of why the competition for Nagar Vadhu was held. As a result, she and Harshdev were trying to escape from there, when the soldiers of Vaishali Raj Mahal came there and freed Amrapali and Harshdev from the captivity of the fighters.

The chief soldier asked Amrapali "Who are you?"

"I am Amrapali, daughter of Kumar Bhatt and it is very important for me to be in the Raj Mahal at this time." Amrapali replied!

"Okay, we will take you to the Raj Mahal" the soldier said to Amrapali and he took Amrapali and Harshdev safely to the Raj Mahal!

Amrapali and Harshdev were unaware that someone was secretly keeping an eye on their every move. The person with a mask on his face was hiding in a corner!

"This girl... will make Amrapali the next courtesan of Vaishali. And then this city of Vaishali will also be under my control.", the person laughed while removing the mask from his face (ha ha ha).

Meanwhile, in the royal palace of Vaishali, many beautiful dancers from India and abroad were practicing dance. Amrapali reached there with Harshdev and suddenly everyone's eyes turned towards her!

"Which state's dancer is this? No one told us about her before." Whispers started pouring in.

"I have heard that some time ago, some people in the city started fighting because of her." This voice came from nowhere!

Amrapali was moving towards the stage, carefully observing all the sarcasm being written on her. Just then two hands pulled her from the crowd and took her to a corner. Amrapali closed her eyes in fear...when she opened her eyes after a moment,

her Guru Pita Kumar Bhatt was standing in front of her. "Amrapali, daughter, what are you doing here?"

Looking into his eyes, Amrapali replied skillfully, "Guru Pita, I have come to participate in the dance competition for the selection of Nagarvadhu."

Bearing Amrapali's hand further, Kumar Bhatt said, "You cannot do this, I am your Guru Pita, the daughter of a Nritya Acharya cannot participate in this competition... this is against the rules of the state."

Hiding her pain, Amrapali said, "But Guru Pita, the Srividya whom you had prepared for this competition for years has betrayed you and Vaishali." Hearing this, Kumar Bhatt was stunned.

Amrapali left his hand and said while looking at his eyes, "Whatever it may be, but it is an act of art for the daughter of a dancer to participate in a dance competition",

Then Amrapali said, "You have definitely raised me...but you are not my real father, you are great...that is why I have the strength to participate in this competition"

Kumar Bhatt could not believe his style, the daughter whom he had raised with great love and care was standing in front of him today! After hearing this, Kumar Bhatt was helpless and could not say anything while looking at Amrapali,

The minister just announced...

"All the dancers come on stage"!

On hearing the announcement, all the dancers came back from the stage!

And then the news spread that "Srividya, disciple of Kumar Bhatt, who is participating in the Naarvadhu competition from Vaishali, will not participate in the competition". Hearing this, everyone had the same question in their mind, when Vaishali's own dancer will not participate in the competition, then how will the decision be taken.

The minister said to the king, "Maharaj, who will represent Vaishali now?"

And then Amrapali, who was looking into Kumar Bhatt's eyes, immediately said "Wait" saying this, she came on the stage!

She said, "I am Amrapali... resident of Vaishali Nagar"

Everyone started looking at Amrapali in surprise!

"These representatives of Vaishali, who are they after all??"

There was a state of confusion in the royal palace...no one knew who this girl is who wants to represent Vaishali!

The minister said, "Devi, what about your introduction??:

"I am Amrapali, daughter of soldier Mahanaman and Kumar Bhatt is my adoptive father"

The entire gathering was shocked.. Then a dancer protested and said "How can the daughter of a dance teacher participate in this competition, this is against the rules",

In response to her, the minister said, "Devi, didn't you hear, Amrapali is not Kumar Bhatt's own daughter, so she can participate in this competition."

Amrapali was given permission to participate in the dance competition by the city council members. And she was sent to rest in the palace!

While moving inside the palace, Amrapali remembered something, and her steps suddenly stopped. The state minister looked at her and said "What happened Devi?? Is there any problem??

Amrapali said very respectfully, "I want to meet the former Nagarvadhu Shrimalu"

The minister was shocked to hear her demand, "Devi this is not possible, before the competition, you cannot meet the Nagarvadhu!"

Amrapali insisted, "Just once, let me meet her"

The minister agreed to Amrapali's request! And Amrapali was taken to Shrimalu's room.

Amrapali was moving slowly from across the country towards that room, to meet the person who had made fun of her years ago...who had hurt her self-respect...she came to the door of that room and stopped for a moment as if she was preparing herself for this moment...this room belonged to the Nagar Vadhu of Vaishali, for whose one glimpse men were ready to sacrifice everything...Amrapali entered the room by pushing the door from across the country...in front of her was sitting Vaishali Nagar's most beautiful, winning everyone's heart, the epitome of incomparable beauty, Vaishali's Nagar Vadhu Shrimalu...her face looked a little upset, as if someone had snatched away her most precious thing...

"Who are you?" Shrimalu asked while looking at Amrapali...

Amrapali looked at Shrimalu with confident eyes and said, "Yes... I am Amrapali... daughter of Mahanaman..."

Shrimalu looked at Amrapali from top to bottom and said... "Okay... so you are that Amrapali for whom people are fighting, the future Nagar Vadhu of Vaishali... hmmm..."

"Do you remember... when you came to meet my Guru at his house a year ago... when I met you... what did you say that day?"

Hearing this, Shrimalu started thinking... she used to meet so many people everyday that she could not remember anyone's face, let alone their words!

"I had seen you a year ago at my Guru Pita's house...seeing your beauty, your charm, your dressing, a naive girl like me had expressed her wish to become a Nagar Vadhu, then you had questioned my looks, my behaviour, my dressing, my beauty...you had said that an ordinary girl like me cannot become a Nagar Vadhu. But see...today people are not taking their eyes off me..." Shrimalu asked laughingly "So you have come to take revenge for the insult that I was responsible for?" "No...I have just come to save my Guru from the insult...I thought I should meet you once and tell you that not every ordinary looking thing can be erased." Nagar Vadhu Shrimalu started laughing loudly "I have seen the world Amrapali, you are naive, even then you did not know what Nagar Vadhu is and you will not do it today also...a pity! Go away Amrapali, run away from this palace, from this city... this place is not for you." Amrapali looked at Shrimalu from top to bottom... today Shrimalu looked like a scared, defeated woman to her. She told her, "I will not leave from here... not until I am able to fulfill my duty, my goal is not to win the dance competition, my goal is to participate in it so that no one can blame my Guru father that he does not have any student who is worthy of this competition." Shrimalu was shocked to see Amrapali's enthusiasm to become Nagar Vadhu... She could not believe how someone could be so excited to become Nagar Vadhu... She felt very bad for Amrapali in her heart, she understood that Amrapali is still unaware of the reality of this Nagar Vadhu... She does not know that becoming Nagar Vadhu is not a good fortune but a curse... A curse that ruins the entire life of a woman,

"Amrapali...do you know what Nagar Vadhu means?"

"Yes I know and I am ready to become one too... You see... I will be called the best Nagar Vadhu ever"

"I am regretting that if I had told you the truth about this Nagar Vadhu that day then today you would not have been standing in this palace tied in such a bondage..."

Amrapali said, 'a little arrogantly'

"What are you saying... Becoming a Nagar Vadhu is not bound by any basis... it is like chains... Today I am feeling so free... You are telling me all this only because you are jealous of me... You are jealous of my beauty... my ability..."

"No Amrapali... You are not understanding what I am saying..."

"And I don't even want to understand... I just came here to meet you once and you will remember that the one whom you rejected and called a boor one day is going to become the Nagar Vadhu of Vaishali today... I am leaving now. .

Before Shrimalu could say anything further, Amrapali quickly came out of his room and the loud sound of the door closing echoed in the entire palace...

Shrimalu said with a very unfortunate feeling in his heart...

"Right now you are not able to see the reality of this Nagar Vadhu in the glare of people, but the day you will face your reality, you will never ask anyone to become Nagar Vadhu again"

Amrapali had just come out of the Nagarvadhu's room when she saw a young man going in. She had never seen such a handsome young man before. She was curious to know who he was. Out of curiosity, Amrapali again moved towards the door of Nagarvadhu Shrimalu's room but the door was shut with a slam. Amrapali tried to listen to something while standing at the door but she couldn't hear anything properly. She tried to peep inside from a window on the other side of the room and she saw something that stunned her. Her whole body started trembling. The young man was standing in front of the Nagarvadhu who was twice his age, holding her arm tightly. There was a strange smile on his face. The cloth on Shrimalu's chest had fallen down. She was pleading, "Sir, you won't make me do all this today. Today is my last day as a Nagarvadhu, today I will not be able to bear the pain given by you." That young man now looked like a demon, not a man. Smiling loudly, he said, "Shrimalu, what about me, you cannot refuse sex to any man in this city, still you are a Nagarvadhu... all the men of Vaishali city have rights over you." And then he held Shrimalu tightly in his arms. The Nagarvadhu of Vaishali was stiff in the grip of that young man like a statue of God!
