1. Prologue

For those who are new to my writing, please feel free to read the ‘Omega series’, ‘Tied up with a Bow’ and ‘The Procurer’ before this book in the same order.

As wolves are pack animals, my writing will have a lot of characters. But I have kept only the important ones at the forefront in this book. There will be no other books for the side characters, except for Grace.

This book is more of an adventure/thriller than smut but where there are Alex and Chloe, there has to be some action that I cannot avoid. And Kaya is their child after all.

“I voted differently to you because I have a way to buy us some time,” Olive said softly to Alex and Max.

But Max looked crestfallen. He’d been shocked and hurt that Olive didn’t take his side and was still sulking.

She always took his side. Until now.

Chloe hated that she was the cause of a rift between them. But she didn’t have time to worry about Max. Or Olive for that matter. She had her own worries right now that outweighed everything else.

“How?” Max said through gritted teeth. “Even if all of us agree to it, you really think Lyle will let her take something like that after what happened to them in the past?”

Olive stepped forward in an attempt to hold Max’s hand to comfort him but he crossed his arms in front of his chest and continued pouting. It was heartwarming to see that he was so passionate about his sister-in-law’s safety and Chloe wanted to smooth things out for him but Max was right. The idea of doing what Olive was suggesting didn’t sit well with any of them, especially Lyle. It didn’t help that Olive couldn’t give them any convincing argument to sell the solution to them. The details she was keeping secret were kept between sorcerers and their code forbade them to share it with any other supernatural.

Olive threw her hands up as she huffed with frustration. “You know I can’t tell everyone why I think this is a good idea? I’m bound by the code! Otherwise, I would be the first to convince all of you….and Lyle.” She turned to Chloe with a pleading look. “You know I wouldn’t do anything to harm you, Chloe. But I’m sorry, I can’t share more to change your mind. Please trust me on this.”

Chloe looked around the almost empty room. Lyle had stormed off at the mere mention of the solution and Cal had adamantly refused to get in the middle of it. Sawyer was appalled by the suggestion and Grace…. well Grace had no idea what they were talking about.

She looked at Alex and then at Max. The two brothers had similar expressions with their brows knotted in worry and uncertainty etched on their faces. Maybe it wasn’t Lyle she needed to convince.

Finally, an idea formed in her head. “Then change Max’s mind,” she started, “as he is bound by the code too, whatever you know can be shared with him. He doesn’t have to share it with us but if you can convince Max and he is comfortable with this, I will order Lyle to let me do this. I’m not sure I can do this without him and we need him on board.”

Both Alex and Max seemed to relax a little. This could work. Olive didn’t need to share anything with them, just with Max. And that wasn’t against the law at all.

“That is a great idea,” Olive beamed as she hugged Chloe before turning to Max. “Come on, let’s get you some suppressors. Your wolf is not going to like where I am taking you and you need more than ten rings to keep your beast in check.”

She grabbed a bewildered Max by the arm and dragged him out of the room. Chloe couldn’t help but smile. The two most powerful sorcerers were also the cutest couple Chloe had ever met.

But her stomach dropped when she turned around and found Alex standing in the same position with the same worry and anxiousness on his face that he’d had since their meeting with the doctor.

Alex wasn’t happy. It had been a long time since Chloe had seen him that way. The votes had been counted and he lost. Grace was his second-in-command but she too had sided with Chloe.

Alex had no choice but to accept the votes of all their family and high rankers when it came to decisions to do with Kaya.

He was standing near the window of the office and avoiding her gaze. Kaya had turned sixteen a few months earlier and she was growing up to be an amazing wolf. She was extremely smart and all the training that Grace and Lyle had given her had only helped her grand wolf become an undefeated fighter.

She had been spending time with Clint and Sia to make integrating with humans easy and with the visiting royals from different kingdoms to keep her around those that matched her rank. Her favourite people in the world were her two uncles, Max and Sawyer and she absorbed all that they taught her like a sponge.

Yes, there had been conflict since she turned fourteen. A lot of it. But only with Lyle. She fought with him and challenged everything he did. Alex had initially enjoyed the new dynamic but lately, it was starting to bother him. In fact, Lyle and Max had been the only two who had voted in Alex’s favour. Even the Old King Archibald and Cal had sided with Chloe.

“It’s unfair to you Chloe,” Alex muttered and pulled her in his arms. His embrace was loving and full of pain at the same time and she almost broke down at his touch. She couldn’t crumble now because Alex and Lyle were taking the news worse than she was. She had to stay strong. She had to help them along this tough time like they had helped her all these years.

“I exist for our family Alex. It would be unfair if I didn’t get a chance to make life easier for Kaya.”

Alex was never going to agree with her on this. “She is ready Chloe. She can be the queen. She’ll have all of us to help her. And you can rest. You need to rest till we figure it all out.”

She remembered him being like this. Years ago. When she had been his omega and he would hold her at night. When he thought he was going to lose her and in light of the new development, in a way he was losing her.

“I know she is ready to be the Queen Alex. But she isn’t ready to hear why she needs to be a queen so soon.”

She looked out of the window and towards the pit as she took in her adorable firstborn. Kaya was dodging Leo and teasing him by letting him get close enough to get her but still not getting caught. Her siblings and other kids watched from the sidelines and they all laughed and chatted happily. They looked exactly like she wanted them to look. Carefree.

Now she just needed Alex to see her point of view.

“Look at her Alex. Look at the way she laughs and the way she smiles.”

Alex followed her gaze and looked at Kaya.

Chloe felt so tired. So exhausted and drained. But she could do this. For her daughter, she could do anything.

She rested her head on Alex’s glorious chest and wrapped her hands around his waist as they stood holding each other, watching their daughter.

Chloe sighed as she remarked. “She’d never be able to smile like that once she finds out I’m dying.”

You did say at the end of Max and Olive’s book that this would be the first chapter of Kaya’s book but I had sort of forgotten that 🤡🥴. I cannot figure out why I didn’t see this was finished but all is not lost, I’m reading it now! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
