The moonlight streamed down on Hannah Carson as she stood in the middle of the woods, a small light forming in the palm of her hand.

She knew it wasn’t smart to be in the middle of the woods by herself at night, but it was the only place she could think of where she could practice her magic without fearing her family would catch her. Her family didn’t want her to practice her magic and forbade her from practicing it. There’d been so many fights about it it wasn’t worth trying to convince them anymore.

She’d tried to practice her magic in her room with the door locked in the middle of the night, but somehow her mother would always catch her. Her mother would unlock the door with a screwdriver and burst in, and then it was World War ||| from there. She didn’t know how but Fiona Carson always knew magic was being practiced and stopped it.

Fiona had screeched and shrilled about how she refused to allow any trace of magic in her house and wouldn’t allow Hannah to utilize magic, that no daughter of hers would be a magic user, or at least live under her roof. At first, Hannah had fought back but quickly saw there was no point. Fiona wouldn’t see reason and there was nothing she could do.

She watched as the small light grew bigger, her complete focus on the magic she was creating, tuning out the noises of the forest around her. She watched with fascination as it grew bigger with her silent command.

Concentrating harder, she had the light start to illuminate the iridescent colors that painted the forest floor. Her breath caught in her throat as she stared at the light with wonder and awe. She couldn’t tear her gaze away from the beautiful light, amazed at how she was advancing in her magic.

She was caught in a trance from her light but it was broken when she heard a shrill voice screech, “HANNAH NICOLE MARIE CARSON!”
