Chapter 1: Welcome Home
I gazed out the car window as my father, John, drove through the charming streets of Rynfield. The quaint town was a far cry from the bustling city I called home for the past 8 years.
My mother's remarriage and my stepfather's travels had brought us to this town, where my father had grown up. My stomach fluttered as I thought about starting anew. I wasn't used to my father, not like I used to be. We once had a good relationship, filled with laughter and adventure. I remembered the way he'd read me stories, the way he'd listen to me talk about my dreams. But that was before the divorce, before we moved and dad became a distant figure in my life. Now, his absence had left a lingering ache, and I struggled to reconcile the father I once knew with the stranger sitting beside me. As we pulled up to our new home, a cozy Victorian house with a wraparound porch, my apprehension grew. I hated change, and this was a big one. Leaving behind my friends, my school, and everything familiar was daunting.
My father, noticing my unease, offered a reassuring smile. "Hey, kiddo, it'll be okay. You'll make new friends, and I'll be here to support you every step of the way." I forced a smile, trying to hide my doubts. But deep down, I wondered if we could ever recapture what we once had. I'm a shy and bookish girl who prefers the company of novels to people. Making friends doesn't come easily to me. And now, I have to navigate a new relationship with my father too. As I unpacked, my mind wandered to the new school I'd be attending. What if I don't fit in? What if I fail to make connections? And what if my father and I continue to drift apart, like two strangers living under the same roof? The thought sent a pang through my heart, and I pushed it away, focusing on the task at hand. But the question lingered, refusing to be silenced.
After my parents divorce, my father threw himself into work to avoid the pain.he already left for work and I was left to unpack and settle into our new place on my own. On a cold and rainy day, I decided to take a hot bath to unwind. Feeling hungry afterwards, I headed downstairs to search for food. I found frozen pizzas in the fridge and cereal in the cupboards, so I made myself a bowl of cereal and sat on the sofa, getting lost in my book. Just as I was absorbed in the story, my phone buzzed with a text from my father, asking me to meet him at the diner for dinner at 6 pm. It was only 4:30pm, so I quickly changed and left wanting to see the Rynfield streets.
As I walked down the street to the diner, I heard someone calling "Ellie!" I turned to see Justin, my childhood best friend, who grew so much,he is now tall and had curly blonde hair, brown eyes, and he was muscular build,i got to admit i kinda had a crush on him. We used to do everything together before everything fell apart. I ran to hug him, and he said, "I missed you, Ellie. It's been eight fucking years." He said with a smile.
We walked and talked, reminding each other about our childhood. At least I had some company now i know I wouldn't be indoors i know Justin will want to show me around because things have changed around here , so maybe this new chapter wouldn't be as bad as I thought. I smiled and continued walking to the diner.
