Summary

The Ellyrium Scepter is a short story/one shot tale from the prompt taken from "The_Reading_Room" within the range of 2.5K to 10K words. Story Word Count: 6006 The inspirations behind it are several but the ones that stood out for me were "The Avatar" in the color of the Eclipsyians, "The Handmaid's Tale" in the dystopian society (seriously, Ursula K. Le Guinn is a classic for a reason and deserves all the love) and a large part of the world construct, along with the stoning part, from "The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson.

Description

Jake Brown found a secret door in his bedroom that previously didn’t exist.

No one else but him could see it and a countdown countdown blazed brilliantly above it.

Curiosity got the best of him and no sooner did he open the door, he found himself on Venus with no way back.

Welcome to the year 1500 in the town of Ellyrium where nothing is as it seems.

Worshippers of the Sun, the townspeople bow in submission.

As if it was a sign from their Lord, a staff lands on Gregory’s hands, choosing him as their Scepter.

It shows a certain percentage above people’s heads which they later discovered as the trust detector.

And so, the saga began.

To survive, there is only one rule: Don’t trust anyone too much.

Trust is a currency that you must live by and only the affluent can afford to have loving relations.

Will Jake survive the town or ever find his way back home?
