Daisies

We met in the third grade, bonded over a shared love for animals and a mutual disdain for math class. From that day on, we were in separable. Every summer, we'd spend our days together exploring the field behind our houses, pretending to be adventurers on a grand quest. Our wrists were always adorned with friendship bracelets, each one a symbol of our unbreakable bond.

As we grew older, our interests evolved, but our friendship remained constant. He was the one who encouraged me to join cheer, and he was always there, cheering me on at every competition. We made a pact to support each other's dreams, no matter what.

Last week, we decided to make new friendship bracelets, just like we did when we were kids. We sat on my porch, laughing and reminiscing about our adventures. He chose bright yellow and white threads, saying they reminded him of daisies. I teased him about his newfound love for flowers, and he just smiled, that goofy grin I knew so well.

Yesterday, we were supposed to meet up to plan our next big adventure. I waited at our usual spot, but he never showed. Maybe he forgot?

My phone rang, and my heart sank as I heard the trembling voice on the other end. There had been an accident. A car, out of control, had taken him from me.

Today, I stand here, clutching a bouquet of daisies. My heart shattered into a million pieces. The friendship bracelet he made for me is still on my wrist, a painful reminder of the bond we shared. I lay the flowers on his casket, tears streaming down my face. Yesterday he told me how much he loved daisies and today I'm laying them on his casket.
