Chapter 1

Wish with a twist

By Banana_Bella16

No one can figure out these powers. Children can be born with them and suddenly, a few years later disappear. Luckily I still have mine. Mine is the power of                      wishes. Everypower is different. There are only a few lucky kids with these abilities.

“REIN! TIME FOR DINNER!” I rush out of my bed and run down the hall. Peaking into Forrest’s room.  With no one in the room,

“I will be down in a minute mom” I yell back. I sneak into my brother’s room. He is oddly obsessed with wood, I mean it makes sense. Forrest…Wood. He has so many types of wood hanging on the walls. Oak, Olive, Redwood, spruce.  I go up to his favorite. Australian Buloke. I think about taking it because why not, but I hear footsteps and hide in a corner behind his desk. No one walks in, Just passes by. As I  run as fast as I can out of the room without making a sound I notice a paper on Forest's desk. Its a sketch of him having his dream power. He was born without magic. The only power he wants is the power to make trees grow. I rush down the old wooden stairs and almost trip down the last one. Sitting down at the old mauve table and matching chairs, my mom serves me my favorite. Blueberry pancakes with whip cream. Forrest got down the stairs before me and is already half way done with his stack of pancakes.  I notice he's  wearing his special bracelet. Our dad gave us bracelets that don’t let wishes and other abilities work on us when worn. They were                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     developed in the lab dad worked in, he died in a tragic science explosion.  Forrest’s  has                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           a tree, representing his name (of the woods, forest) and mine has a water droplet representing mine (water falling in drops condensed from vapor in the atmosphere, dad always loved science terms). I finished up my pancakes, cleared the table and started the dishes.

“Go do your homework Rein, I will finish the dishes” My mom says as she pushes me out of the way and takes the dishes from my hands. I dry my hands onto Iris Purple kitchen towel and sprint up stairs.

“And don’t use your wishes”.

                                                                                                                                                                                                       1

Mom yells from the kitchen. I roll my eyes  and make my way up the second half of the stairs. I grab some papers from my backpack, a pencil and dive into bed. I whisper a wish.

“I wish my homework was finished and neat with all the answers correct” The pencil picks itself up and writes in all the answers. I hear feet ride up the stairs, so grab the pencil and pretend like I have been writing in answers the whole time.

“Almost done with your homework?” my mom asks as she enters the room.

“Yep” , I stuff the papers back into my bag and get under the Purple knitted blanket my grandma made for me and get cozy.  Mom kisses my forehead,

“All right honey, I love you. See you in the morning”  She turns off the light and shuts the door

“Good night mom”

My eyes pop open. My clock says 1:43a.m.

“I  wish I could go back to sleep”  blink. blink. There is a chill in the air. The crisp fall air rushes into my room and picks up the curtains. What?!?! Why is my window open? I get out of the warm & cozy  blanket and into the cold air. . I slam the window shut, place the curtains back to where they were supposed to go and climb back into bed.  On the way to my bed I noticed a white blob on my nightstand. A letter? I unfold the piece of paper and read:

Rein.,

I stole your power, dare to doubt and we shall battle. Prepare for death Rein Fyre.

     From, Pyry

Who is this and how could the “black blizzard” know my name? Doubt his power? Stole my magic?

“I DOUBT YOU COULD POSSIBLY HUNT ME DOWN, STEAL MY POWER AND MAKE ME BATTLE TO GET IT BACK” I somehow scream without letting any sound escape. Nothing. Nothing happens.

“SEE” I roll my eyes and figure. I figure that my magic is just having some issues. Probably just a prank from Forrest. Maybe I am sick, it usually gets weird when I am ill.

I start worrying about a million different situations but at some point I find my way to sleep.

I wake up the next morning, rushing to pack my bag, stuff a bagel into my hand I think about rushing up stairs to get the note and show Elli but I am already late.

“”I Wish I could teleport directly to school”” Poof. I appear in front a tall school building. Looks nothing like my school.

“Prince academy”, A huge sign reads in the front of the school. I thought that was a dream. The note. The magic thief.  I now realize this is all real, I didn't even check my nightstand for the note.

:”I wish I could teleport home” I scream.  All the so-called Princes stare at me, but I do not have enough time to be embarrassed. I have to get to my homeroom on time. I finally teleported to my school, shocked that it worked and see everyone rushing in. It starts to rain and thunder.

I settle down in my seat.

“Elli, Guess what happened last night it was the craziest thing ever!” Elli looks over at me curiously. Elliana, my best friend since forever, our moms were really close growing up. I start to describe the terrible night I had to her.

“So I woke up in the middle of the night and I found a note on my nightstand. turns out some dude stole my magic and replaced it with a messed up version. I can show you later if you wanna come over.” Elli raises her eyebrows.

“What? Prove it, right here, right now” She says sarcastically. We look at Mrs. Caddle. She is staring at us from the tops of her glasses. Mrs. Caddle is the meanest , most annoying, cruelest teacher in the school, once she gave me a detention for being 1 minute late.

“I’ll get in trouble” Elli stands up and walks up to the teachers desk.

“Mrs. Caddle, may I go to the bathroom please?” Mrs. Caddle nods and as Elli walks out the room she gives me a look. There is no way she will let both of us go at the same time. I raise my hand a few moments later,

“Mrs. Caddle, Can I go fill my water bottle?” She gives me a mean look, I manage to squeak out  a please and she jerks her head towards the door. I grab my water bottle and walk as quickly out of the room as I can without looking suspicious.

BAM! The bathroom door slams shut and I meet Elli by the sinks.

“What should I wish for?”

“I don’t know, How about…. For a  pencil or something” I put out my hand and prepare to wish.

“I wish for a pencil to appear in my hand”  All of a sudden a pen drops into Elli’s hand. My wishes are really twisted. I’m aware but still shocked. A pen, the opposite of a pencil lands in Elli’s hand. Not mine. Her eyes are wide.

“Whoa that's weird” We hear the bell ring and agree to meet up after school at Elli’s house. We rush out the bathroom, Elli heads back to class and I fill my water. We can’t afford detention today. I go back to the classroom, throw my backpack onto my back and catch up to Elli.

“Okay, can you text your mom and tell her you're gonna come after school, we need to investigate this more.” Elli drops her bag to make sure she has her  math textbook.

“Yea! You're sure you're free today, I thought you had a track.” 29-06-34. I enter the code for my locker and grab my social studies books.

“I will see you later, I have to get to math.”

“Alright, see ya” I grab my pencil case and rush across the school to Mr. Deigo’s History class. I arrive and sit in my assigned seat next to Peggy. She picks her nose and puts in under her desk or eats it. I think I might barf just thinking about it. One time she offered me a booger. Mr. Diego starts class by droning on about the French and Indian war. I think I might fall asleep, maybe even Mr.Deigo will, this topic is so boring. All of a sudden the loudspeaker turns on.

“ATTENTION, THIS IS A CODE RED. I REPEAT, THIS IS A CODE RED, NOT A DRILL. LOCK YOUR DOORS AND SHUT DOWN THE LIGHTS, I REPEAT…” The voice goes on a loop.. Mr.Deigo finally looks awake. He check the hall for any kids, shuts the door, pulls down the paper the cover the window and locks the door. We all huddle together in the corner of the room like a bunch of penguins.  As the class sits there is silence. We hear police sirens, police officers, walkie talkies, and footsteps that sound like a blizzard. All of a sudden there is silence. There are no sounds at all. No sirens, No footsteps, no blizzards. No nothing. The loud speaker shut downs, in sync with the light.  Just pure silences. After what feels like 20 minutes somebody jingles the door handle. Mr. Deigo assumes it is a police officer unlocking the door ensuring our safety, but Mr. Deigo assumed wrong. A dark blizzard breaks into the room knocking the teacher out and making books and desks move and fly. The blizzard transforms into a person. His eyes are set on me as his finger points at me I start to glow and lift of the ground. Everyone is staring, eyes wide, eyebrows lifted. Even the teacher has gained consciousness and is staring eyes wide. I float towards him. Police officers run into the room shouting.

“PUT HER DOWN NOW”

“HANDS ON YOUR HEAD NOW OR WE WILL SHOOT”  There guns are pointed at this stranger. He pulls me in closer and turns back into the blizzard. I can barely see anything. I hear guns firing and kids shouting my name. The blizzard swirling around me. It's cold, it tastes like black licorice. A bullet hits me right in my rib cage. I glance down, blood drips onto my hands and clothes. All of a sudden everything goes black.

My eyes open slowly. I realize I am still in the blizzard. Suddenly there is a huge gap underneath me and there is nothing to hold on to. As  I fall I see the blizzard glide over to the dark cave on the other side of the lava pit. I curl into a tight ball realizing this is the end. Goodbye Elli, Love you mom, I’ll miss you Forrest. Bye life, bye everything I loved. I brace for impact and suddenly hit the  wet ground. I slide on the leafy grass and land in a bush. After I finally gain full consciousness, I realize that I must have hit a rock. My head is pounding and bleeding. I rip the arms of my sweatshirt and tie one around my head and the other around my ribs, I  leave the remaining of the hoodies on the ground. I stand up and stumble a few times. After finding my balance I dust off the dirt off my pants and the rain helps.

"WHOA! How did you survive that fall?" A Voice says from behind the bush.

"I am not sure myself" I say with a laugh. Then I realize that, that is not my mind talking. I whip around and see a girl around my age walking toward me. She has a beat up backpack and dirty clothes.

"Hi, I'm Kimberly.” She put her hand out confidently. “Hello” I say back slowly.

“I can help with your injuries.” Kimberly puts her bag down and takes out some bandages and water. I sit back on the ground and untie the sweatshirt.

“This might sting '' Kimberly lets water soak into an old shirt and pat it down on my side. I gasp in pain as I watch the blood soak in the old shirt. Soon after she put a bandage on and did the same to my head.

“So…? Where are you from?” I ask while wincing.

“ I am an orphan, I escaped the  orphanage and now I live in the woods” She puts on a nervous smile. Kimberly packs things up and zips up her bag. Once the bag is out of the way, she moves some leaves around with the toe of her shoes and plops down

“My dad went missing one day and never came back. I never met my mom.” Her hazel watery eyes are looking at the ground

“I had the power to talk to animals. It was amazing, I would go to the woods with my dad and talk with the animals for hours. We had too much fun, but one day the power was  just. Gone. On that same day my dad went missing and I got kidnapped by a black blizzard. The same one that captured you” She looks up back at me and then straight back to the ground

“I have always tried to get the animals to remember me and try to understand them but I never did.” I watch as a tear drops from her eye, slides down her cheek and onto a leaf on the ground. Suddenly she stands up, wipes her eyes with her sleeve and gives me a hand to stand up too. I grab her hand and slowly stand up wincing at the pain in the side.

“What about you…?” Her voice trails off.

“Rein, my name is Rein” “Nice to meet you Rein, where are YOU from?” I step back unaware of the movement.

“Well… I also got my power taken and a  black blizzard dropped me here. I am kinda surprised I am not dead, I a bullet grazed the skin  in my side and dropped from the sky” I say this a laugh

“I think I saw it travel that way” I pointed across the bridge and to the huge cave on the other side.

“Well then, let's go '' We get onto the  wet, slippery bridge and it starts shaking uncontrollably. We are slipping and sliding everywhere.  I finally find my balance and start  my way  across. The larva pit spits bubbles at us and crackles as we cross. Without any warning,  I hear a big SNAP! My head whips around and Kimberley half falls through the bridge with only her arm holding on the side ropes. I rush over as fast as I can and pull her up with all my strength. Once safe we make our way across the bridge and land right in front of the cave.

“By the way, I had the power of wishes. I still kinda do. Whoever is inside this cave switched it out with a messed up version and all my wishes are twisted.” She nods her head with an

“Okay”  and we walked in.  At first this looks just like a normal cave. A small underground chamber. Bats, bat poop, dark, moist environment. As we walk through we shoo the bats away and step over lumps of poop. Kimberly finds a metal pipe sticking out. I turn the knob on top and water comes running out.

“Weird, there is a pipe with water in the middle of nowhere” Kimberly says as she follows the path of water. It runs underneath the wall of the cave. She bangs against the wall it runs under. Hollow. I decided to knock on the wall too. Same result. Our hands glide across the wall to find a door knob. I found a key hole. Kimberly drops her bag and digs around for a moment. After some time she finds a paperclip, bends it into a straight line and picks the lock. The cave wall swings open forming a door. We enter. The first room is a kitchen. A normal old kitchen. With a sink, dishwasher, oven, table, chairs, fridge, everything. The only unusual thing is the blood stained carpet and the unusual collection of knives. We find a door and move to the next room. The blizzard is nowhere to be found.  With no time wasted we sneak across the game room. Kimberly found another secret door, this time disguised as a bookshelf. We decide to split up, Kimberly will go through the secret door and I will go through the one left. Plan activated. I  sneak into the next room. Looks like a nice bedroom. Even has a dog bed. I wander around the room. On the desk in the corner, there are notes. A letter, mailed to Pyry. Maybe that is the blizzards name Pyry. I notice a safe in the corner. 2596, Nope. 7952, Declined. 5060, Rejected. I don’t have enough time for this, so I have to move on. I creak open the door and pop my head in through the crack to see Kimberly’s  hands tied behind her back and mouth taped shut. I shut the door as quickly and quietly as possible. I make a wish hopefully finding a loophole around my curse

“I wish the tape and rope on Kimberly would stay on her forever.”  I cross my fingers  and hope that this works. The door creaks open a little bit and I peek through. There are orbs holding what looks like magic. There are black, orange, green, and purple. All on a podium, with a label underneath written in sharpie. Teleportation, Mind reading, Pause time, Talk to animals. That must be Kimberly’s power. Then I realize a Pastel purple orb with a cracked glass dome with a label written as if a child wrote it, Wishes. That has to be my magic. The tape rips of Kimberly’s  mouth, I can tell she tries to hold in a yelp. The rope unties itself and drops to the floor. Suddenly Pyry whips around for the corner of the room and hurdles towards her. “I wish Pyry would melt into the floor. '' He freezes into an ice cube and I rush in.

“I can’t believe that actually worked,” I say as I run towards Kimberly. She jumps from the chair

“You said that your power is wishes right?” I nod

“Well I think the podium with the cracked dome is yours and that on is mine” She gestures toward the green orb across the room. Suddenly we hear ice starting to  crack. We sprint towards our orbs a grab the gently. Afterwords, just a moment later, we look around the room frantically. I run towards  a bookcase and start flinging books off the shelf hoping this is a secret door like the other. It looks just like the others. Kimberly realizes what I am doing and joins in, Finally we find the right book in time as Pyry spirits towards us opening his mouth to say a curse or wish. A red velvet  book with  a golden spine, I rush it off the shelf and get through the door as quick as possible. The door frame is followed by an antique, splintered,  stair case. Kimberly holds the door shut as Pyry bangs against it trying to get it open. She jams a book into the right spot to get the door jammed. We rush  and trip down a few trying our best to hold on to the delegate orbs. As we enter the new room, there are shelfs holding old books and bottles full of liquids. In the corner of the room there is a warning symbol

“Proceed with caution” there is a glass bubble with a small, thin shelf with a wand on top.

“Practice hub” Kimberly mutters as she reads a sign on the glass bubble. Interesting. The bottles on the shelfs are labeled with names for, Poison, Curses for turning people into animals  and a lot more. The books are velvet, hard covered, cracked and dirty. I pull one out, a black cover with red bindings and words.

“How to insert power” the faded words read across the cover.

“We need to get out of here. Quick before that psycho kills us” Kimberly announces.

“His name is Pyry, it was on a letter mailed to him” Kimberly zips open her bag and plops her orb into her bag and gestures to place mine in. She wraps it in a sweatshirt she finds to keep it as safe as possible.

“Here, this might help us get our powers back in and the mixed up out” She shoves it in there, zips up the bag and tosses it onto her back. We wander out a door and into an old, rusted elevator. I can tell Kimberly is nervous and I probably should be too. The elevator stops and the door opens. It is only half way up to the next floor and there is a little opening at the top.

“Maybe if you climb onto my shoulders you will be able to reach the opening and then possibly pull me up” I suggest.

“Sure” Kimberly nods. I get as close as I can to the wall and she hops into my hand and climbs onto my shoulders. She shoves her way through the opening and I toss her bag up as carefully as possible,  once she's up there. I noticed a small dent in the wall and tried to use that to climb off of it. Kimberly reaches out and pulls me up. I finally make it out and we make our way down the long hallway and into a room with costumes, outfits and accessories. We have to get out of here, no time to explore. We open a door to a recognized secret hallway and sneak  through. Back through the game room and into the kitchen. We are so close. Slam. But so far. A door slams shut and a black dressed figure comes out with a cape following. A duck is in his hands and quacking like crazy after making eye contact with us. Pyry looks up and rushes towards putting his duck into the dog bed. We run out and find the door we used to come in and rush out, but not in enough time to close the door and get away.  The thunderstorm must have stopped. Pyry is on our backs and I notice a sharp, jagged knife in his hand. We start sprinting towards the bridge and try to make it across. Pyry starts shaking it like crazy and pulling the ropes out from under the posts that were keeping it in place. The bridge collapses and falls down only hanging from the posts on the other side. I am scared for my life. The lava starts bubbling even more and higher. We climb as fast a possible. We make our way up the bridge and lay on the ground.

“Oh thank goodness we made it out of there alive, We almost died” Kimberly manages to gasp out. My eyes are wide open as I watch Pyry give us a death stare and throw the knife across the lava river but fortunately it misses us andburn in the lava.  He slowly walks back into the darkness of the cave. Me and Kimberly move across the forest and into a little spot she has been living in.

“Let’s try to get bad magic out and the good in” She unzips her bag and unwraps my magic orb. I take it gently and try to clean some spots on the glass. Kimberly does the same. I snatch the book from earlier and open up the wrinkled, torn, damp pages. Dust flies out and I slowly read out the lines to Kimberly

“To insert magic within yourself, you must take out the one that's in. Step one, Place your hand over the subject that needs magic removed. Step two, Ensure that the subject is calm and relaxed. Step three, Recite these words, word for word with no mistakes. Remove the power within this individual, Lift the power, make this magic disappear.  Chapter 2.

“Let’s do this” I sit in a criss-crossed position, relaxed and calm as I can be right now. Kimberly places her hand over my head and memorizes the lines from the book.

“Remove the power within this individual, Lift the power, make this magic disappear.” Kimberly jumps back and  a black fog and dust rises from me and forces its way out of my hands, head and shoulders. A glass orb starts from the bottom as it collects the black magic from inside me. ‘WHOA! Your eyes turned black. Darker than the brown they were before. That was so cool! Let’s try to get the Purple magic back inside now, Kimberly says as she picks up the Purple magic orb from my lap. I recite the words from the book again

“Now that you're freed from the prison of magic to place it in you must stab the orb. Step one,  Select your choice of magic wisely. Step two, Write the name of the individual that wants this magic.” I glance up at Kimberly. She is digging through her bag for a marker, I’m assuming.

“Step three, place a drop of blood from the subject's finger, and smear the blood around the name. Step four, To transfer the magic, stab the orb with a knife. Proceeding with step number four, the magic shall lead out from the orb and into the person who needs the magic.” Kimberly  grabs a knife from the ground and a sharpie.

“Ready?” She takes the purple marker and shiney orb from her lap and places it onto the ground.  “Sorry, what's your name again?” She says with an embarrassed expression

“Rein. Rein Fyre” She writes down my name with the periwinkle marker in a jagged handwriting. I place my index finger over the orb and brace a finger prick. Kimberly looks up at me nervously and glides the knife across the skin for my finger. Thick blood slowly starts to pour out. I take my finger and drag it around my name.  Onces I take my hand away, Kimberly takes the knife and jabs it into the glass orb. The glass cracks all the way around but does not shatter. Purple fog suddenly starts fading from the orb, up over the knife and makes a path leading to me. It goes in through my head and my eyes turn the same shade of Purple according to Kimberly. Then it is all over, The glass shaders everywhere, the Purple fog path disappears, and my eyes return to the normal shade of Purple they were before. It worked.

“I wish the glass on the ground would disappear”  The glass fades away. I glide my hand across the cold, cave ground and nothing.

“Oh my gosh! I have my power back! We have to do that for you!” We repeat all those steps. I write her name in a neat font,  glide the knife across the surface of her skin, and stab the orb with the knife. Her eyes turn a forest green and the path leads into her mouth and eyes. Amazing. Once Kimberly snaps back she insists on trying to talk to the animals. She catches a bird and holds it gently.

“Hello little bird.” The bird tweets on and on.

“I have to go small one, see you soon” She pets the bird with her pinky finger and releases it back into the forest.

“I have missed talking to the animals so much. That was amazing!” I glance down at the black orb.

“What are we doing with the black magic?” I think out loud

  Kimberly shrugs.

“I don’t know, we could toss it into the lava, back there.” She points towards the path we came from. I grab the orb and Kimbely zips up her bag and we head towards the lava pit.

“We have to be careful, Pyry might appear. Remember he can fly” I remind Kimberly as I trip over a branch.

“I know, we have to do this quickly, plus you probably have to get home. Your parents are most likely worried” I dust off my pants and nod along to what Kimberly has said. We finally made it to the lava pit. I take the orb and hold it over the lava.

“Are we sure? I am not sure how it will react to the magic.” Suddenly the lava rises to the surface and it burns the tip of my shoes, leaving a burnt fabric left.

“OW” I wince as I hold my foot in my hands hopping backwards. The  orb has fallen out of my hands and onto the ground right in front of the pit. Kimberly lines up her foot and kicks it half way across. The orb floats for a moment and then sinks leaving a black trail of magic at the surface. Shortly after, the sky turns into a dark purple and a huge bubble forms around us. From the trail we were walking on before to the bridge far in front of us. Without warning a man drops from the sky and into the bubble. Must be Pyry. He unfortunately lands safely.

“Give me back your magic and my books before I toss you in the lava. At that moment I realize He is holding up Kimberly with his magic, nearly choking her. The bubble is stretched over the pit. I am frozen, in time. I shout a wish praying it works.

“I wish Pyry would learn his lesson and everything would go back to normal” Nothing.  Nothing  happens.

“Your power won’t work, Rein. It never will, not in here”  He walks towards lifting his left hand. My feet levitate off the ground and I can see the magic trying the lift out of me. I try to force it down with my magic, but it creates a trial towards a glass orb forming. There are many gaps in the space after the trial of Purple fog. There is a green trail following the Purple. He makes me face the lava pit and we float over right in front. Pyry forces his right hand forward making Kimberly float right over  the pit of lava. She lowers closer with the bubble nearly hitting her.

“WE GAVE YOU OUR MAGIC. WHAT ELSE DO YOU WANT FROM US” I scream to Pyry.

“THERE IS NOTHING YOU COULD POSSIBLY DO NOW. YOU ARE BOTH DEAD.” Suddenly Kimberly drops from the invisible restraints and falls into the lava. The moat of magma swallows her whole leaving nothing at the surface. My eyes well with tears of anger and sorrow. I blink the tears away and glance down. I am floating over the pit of lava.
