Intro

Nyla Sparks wasn’t like the other students at the university. At 34, with a decade of managing a retail chain and the trials of single motherhood behind her, she was chasing something new—a fresh start, a rekindled passion. Her daughter, now twelve, was her biggest cheerleader, encouraging her mother’s quest for a degree in environmental science.

As she neared graduation, Nyla sought a final challenge to prove her mettle: a 12-hour hiking trip through the rugged landscapes of Lithuania. She meticulously planned every detail, from the gear to the route, a skill honed from years of juggling crises at work and home. Among her hiking group was Damon Reid, a 37-year-old athlete known globally for his solo achievements. Damon wasn’t just there for the thrill; he was learning to work in a team, a new terrain for him.

The hike began smoothly, the group navigating the dense forests and open meadows with ease. But as they approached a beautiful sand canyon, Nyla, drawn by the sight, lingered to capture the moment. Damon, similarly lost in thought, wandered off from the group, and the two soon found themselves alone.

When they stumbled into each other, the surprise was mutual. Nyla, embarrassed for losing track of the group, and Damon, frustrated at his own lack of attention, shared a silent acknowledgment of their predicament. As they retraced their steps, the sky darkened ominously. A sudden storm caught them off guard, forcing them to seek shelter in an abandoned hill house they had passed earlier.

Inside, they found no electricity or phone signal, only a dilapidated room offering scant protection against the chill. As the wind howled and rain lashed against the windows, they sat by the small fireplace, the tension between them palpable. Damon, used to solitude, found Nyla’s presence unsettling yet oddly comforting. Nyla, on the other hand, was intrigued by Damon’s reserved demeanor, a stark contrast to her own openness.

As the night wore on, the conversation turned personal. Damon shared tales of his adventures, the loneliness that often accompanied his achievements, and his struggle with connecting to people. Nyla spoke of her journey back to academia, her fears of being too old to start over, and her desire to set a strong example for her daughter. The barriers between them slowly crumbled, revealing vulnerabilities and unspoken desires.

In a moment of unguarded honesty, they shared a kiss, a fleeting touch that spoke of longing and confusion. The intimacy was brief, a spark in the storm, but it left them both shaken. By morning, as the storm passed and they rejoined their group, Nyla insisted that they keep their encounter a secret, fearing the complications it could bring. Damon, though conflicted, agreed, sensing the turmoil within her.

Back at the university, the two tried to maintain distance, yet their thoughts frequently returned to that night. Damon found himself drawn to Nyla, captivated by her strength and warmth. Nyla, though struggling with her feelings, couldn’t deny the connection they shared. They crossed paths often, in lectures, at the library, and during campus events, each encounter fraught with unspoken words and lingering gazes.

As the semester drew to a close, both Nyla and Damon realized that they had to confront their feelings. Nyla, preparing for her final presentation, was surprised to find Damon waiting for her afterward. He spoke candidly, expressing his desire to explore whatever it was that had sparked between them. Nyla, initially hesitant, found herself unable to resist the pull she felt towards him.

"Back to the Trail" became more than just a memory of a shared hike; it was a metaphor for the paths they were each walking, both alone and together. They agreed to take things slowly, to see where the trail might lead, without fear or pretense.

Their journey was just beginning, a testament to the power of unexpected connections and the courage to embrace new possibilities. In each other, they found not just companionship, but a mirror reflecting their own strengths and vulnerabilities, and the hope of a future intertwined.

Ku_Rolet: The novel was good, and I really enjoyed reading it. I love the leads and their bond, but I have one question that confused me. How could Tristan have been dreaming about his mate since he was a child if Omara was already mated to someone else before him? If Kyle had accepted Omara, would Tristan ne...

jo987_123: This is a good story, but it needs a good editor to go through this iteration and fix the mistakes. The pov changes from 1st person to 3rd person, often, and sometimes within one sentence. It needs a liberal sprinkling of punctuation marks throughout, and a decision needs to be made about the char...
