Chapter 1

“Ella.” Kain’s voice pierced the tranquil morning like a sharp dagger. Ella couldn’t stop herself from flinching, and she cursed herself for it. She forced herself to keep her gaze fixed on the cold stone floor, scrubbing harder with raw, bleeding hands as if trying to erase his presence. But she couldn’t escape the heavy thuds of his boots as they stomped across the creaking floorboards, each step like a deafening clap of thunder that magnified his looming and oppressive presence in the cramped cottage.

She knew he was standing behind her, watching her with those dark, unfeeling eyes. His hot breath on her neck, his rough hands reaching for her. She tried to block out the memories of their past, the pain and fear that still haunted her every waking moment.

But she couldn’t escape him. He was her husband, her tormentor, her jailer. And she was trapped in this loveless, suffocating marriage, unable to break free.

“Ella,” he repeated, his voice an icy command. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, steeling herself for whatever he had come to say. It was always something cruel, something designed to hurt her.

But to her surprise, his next words were not an accusation or a threat. “I have business in the city,” he said, his tone strangely resigned. “I won’t be back until tomorrow.”

Ella’s heart skipped a beat. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Was he actually leaving her alone for a whole day? It was unheard of. She almost dared to hope that maybe, just maybe, this was her chance to escape.

But she knew better. Kain was still here, still watching her, waiting for her to make a move. She couldn’t let her guard down for even a second.

Ella lowered her gaze, unwilling to meet his. Her heart hammered in her chest, a wild rhythm she feared he could hear. She knew the consequences of defiance–they always landed heavily on her shoulders. So she straightened her back, staring at a spot just beyond his shoulder, praying that he wouldn’t catch the glimmer of hope hidden in her eyes.

“Understood,” she whispered, her tone flat and devoid of any emotion. Kain’s frown deepened as he scrutinized her. Ella could almost feel the waves of tension rolling off him like a storm cloud ready to burst.

“I shouldn’t have to remind you of your place,” he snarled, invading her personal space until their bodies were nearly brushing against each other.

But Ella wouldn’t retreat. She kept her focus steady on that spot beyond his shoulder, refusing to show any sign of weakness or fear. Inside, though, she was shaking like a leaf caught in a gusty wind, filled with dread for what might come next.

Suddenly, Kain reached out and gripped her chin tightly, forcing her to meet his gaze. “Remember who you belong to,” he hissed, his grip on her chin almost painful.

And just like that, Ella’s hope vanished as quickly as it had appeared. She knew there would be no escape for her today–or any other day.

“Of course,” she managed to reply evenly before Kain abruptly let go of her and turned away without another word.

Ella released a breath she didn’t realize she had been holding as she watched him storm out of the cottage and slam the door behind him. She leaned against the rough stone wall for support, feeling drained and defeated.

She knew better than to dwell on what could have been. Kain would never leave her alone long enough for an escape attempt and if she did, where would she go? Kain would burn down every village just to find her. The only place he wouldn’t go was the Fae Lands and for a very good reason.

Ella finished scrubbing the floor and turned her attention to scrubbing the dishes from that morning’s breakfast, her mind lost in bittersweet daydreams of a life without Kain. A life where she was free to make her own choices, to live without fear.

But those dreams were quickly shattered as harsh reality came crashing back. She glanced down at her rough and calloused hands, the physical manifestation of Kain’s cruelty and control.

Trembling, Ella set down the scrub brush and rubbed her hands together, wincing at the pain. She had grown accustomed to the constant ache in her hands from labor, but it still served as a constant reminder of her captivity.

She knew better than to dwell on what could have been. And even if she did manage to physically escape from Kain’s grasp, she could never outrun the emotional scars he had left on her. She was damaged, and no one wanted damaged goods.

With a heavy heart, Ella went back to her daily chores. It seemed like an endless cycle–cleaning, cooking, and serving Kain’s every whim. But somehow, she found solace in these menial tasks. They provided a temporary escape from the harsh reality of her life.

As she worked, she couldn’t help but think about how different things could have been if fate hadn’t brought Kain into her life. She had once dreamed of owning a small cottage by the sea, with a garden full of flowers and herbs. A place where she could live peacefully and tend to her plants without fear.

But now those dreams seemed like distant memories–unattainable and far-fetched fantasies that would never come true.

Trembling, Ella picked up the scrub brush again and continued washing the dishes. Her fingers were already sore from scrubbing all morning, but she dared not slow down or stop. Kain would not tolerate laziness or disobedience.

As she scrubbed away at a particularly stubborn stain on a plate, tears pricked at the corners of her eyes. Ella remembered how her life had been before Kain. She had grown up in a small village, surrounded by family and friends who loved and supported her. But all of that changed when Kain came to town.

He was charming and handsome, with a smooth tongue that could convince anyone to trust him. Ella had been foolish enough to fall for his false promises of love and a better life.

But as soon as they were married, Kain’s true colors began to show. He was controlling and manipulative, using fear and violence to keep Ella under his command.

Ella tried to resist him at first, but every rebellion ended in bruises and broken bones. Eventually, she gave in to his demands, knowing it was the only way to survive.

And now here she was–trapped in this cottage on the edge of the forest, forced to cater to Kain’s every need while he roamed free without a care in the world.

Tears continued to fall as Ella scrubbed harder at the plate, desperately trying to erase any traces of the past. But no matter how hard she scrubbed or how much soap she used, she couldn’t erase the memories of what Kain had done to her.

She thought about all the times he had hit her for speaking out of turn or not obeying his commands fast enough. The times he had forced himself on her when she refused his advances.

The constant fear that filled her every waking moment was suffocating. Ella couldn’t remember the last time she had felt truly at peace. Every morning, she woke up with a sense of dread, unsure of what the day would bring.

The next morning came all too fast, and Ella found a rare moment of respite by a small, foggy window. She gazed out longingly, tracing the winding dirt road that led into the forest, to the forbidden Fae Lands. The distant sounds of birds chirping and leaves rustling carried through the stillness of the cottage.

But as soon as she heard Kain’s heavy footsteps approaching, her heart beat faster with fear. She quickly turned away from the window and continued her chores.

She scrubbed and cleaned until her hands were raw and her back ached from constantly hunching over. Kain demanded perfection in everything she did, and any sign of disobedience or laziness would result in punishment.

Ella couldn’t understand how anyone could be so cruel and heartless. She remembered how loving and caring Kain had seemed when they first met–it was hard to believe he was the same person who now treated her like an object to be used and discarded.

A bird glided by outside, its feathers catching the sunlight. Ella smiled wistfully, imagining what it would be like to fly away like that bird, unrestrained by any cage or captor. But those thoughts were quickly pushed aside as Kain’s gruff voice interrupted her daydreams.

“Hurry up with those chores, Ella!” he snapped from the other room.

Ella’s heart sank as she reluctantly put down her scrub brush and rushed to obey his command. She knew better than to keep him waiting–his anger only grew worse if things weren’t done on his timeline.

No matter how hard Ella worked, it never seemed to be enough for Kain. The chores were never-ending and even when she finished one task, he would find another for her to do. As she scrubbed the floors on her hands and knees, Ella was acutely aware of his presence looming over her, inspecting her work.

Eventually, Kain called her over to the dining table where he had laid out a pile of coins. Her hands trembled as she counted them, making sure not to make any mistakes. She couldn’t afford to make a mistake–Kain would not hesitate to punish her for it.

Finally, she placed the last coin on the table and looked up at Kain expectantly. But instead of taking the coins, he leaned back in his chair and studied her with a calculating look.

“Is this all we have?” he asked, his tone accusing.

Ella swallowed hard and nodded, avoiding his intense gaze. She knew what was coming next — another lecture about how she needed to work harder and bring in more money for them.

“You need to be more resourceful, Ella,” Kain said sharply. “We cannot survive on these meager earnings.”

Ella clenched her fists under the table, feeling anger bubbling inside of her. It wasn’t like she had any control over their finances–Kain made all the decisions and him going to the tavern didn’t help.

But instead of arguing back like she wanted to, Ella simply nodded and apologized for not being able to do better.

Kain exhaled a breath heavy with frustration, his fingers raking through the unkempt strands of his hair. “I’m at my wit’s end,” he mumbled to himself, a dark implication in his eyes as they swept over Ella. “There’s only so much one man can do to keep us both afloat.”

Ella’s stomach twisted with fear as she realized what he was implying. She had heard rumors of women in their village turning to prostitution as a last resort, but she never thought it would come to that.

“What are you suggesting, Kain?” she asked cautiously.

He turned to her with a sneer on his face. “Don’t be stupid, girl. You have your body – use it to bring in more money.”

Ella recoiled at his words, feeling sick to her stomach. She couldn’t believe he would even suggest such a thing.

“No,” she said firmly, shaking her head. “I won’t do that.”

Kain’s eyes darkened at her defiance, and he took a threatening step towards her. “You will do whatever I say,” he spat angrily.

Despite her resolve, Ella couldn’t shake off the sickening feeling in her stomach. She couldn’t believe she was living with a man who would even suggest such a thing.

But she also knew that Kain wasn’t one to back down easily. He would find a way to make her do his bidding, whether it was through manipulation or force.

She wiped away her tears and took a deep breath, trying to calm herself. She couldn’t let Kain see how much his words affected her. If this was what he had planned for her, then she would go where he wouldn’t.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, its last rays cast long shadows across the small cottage, hiding it in darkness. Ella moved quickly, her feet barely making a sound on the weathered wooden floorboards. She lit several candles, their flickering flames casting eerie shadows over the rough-hewn walls of the cottage.

“I have to hurry,” she whispered to herself, her hands shaking as she knelt beside the bed. With practiced ease, she pried open a loose floorboard and reached inside, retrieving a small bag that she had hidden away. Her heart pounded in her chest as she added a few more items to its already full contents.

The sound of approaching footsteps made her freeze in fear. She carefully and quickly hid the bag back under the floorboard before sitting on top of the bed. Trying her best to calm her racing heart, she played with the hem of her shirt. The anticipation was almost too much to bear as she waited.

Kain barged into the room, his eyes ablaze with fury and his nostrils flared. The aura of aggression radiated off him, filling the small space with an intense heat. Ella’s heart raced as she struggled to maintain her composure, forcing a weak smile to mask her true terror.

“What’s going on here?” Kain growled, his voice low and dangerous. His sharp gaze locked onto Ella’s, causing her to stammer and avoid his piercing stare.

“Just getting ready for bed,” she managed to say, her hands trembling at her sides. But Kain wasn’t buying it. She could feel his angry energy pulsating through the air, and she feared what might happen next.

With a raised eyebrow, Kain scanned the room with a critical eye. Ella held her breath, afraid he would discover her carefully laid plans. Her heart sank as he rummaged through her dresser and tore open her bedding, looking for anything that he disapproved of.

Ella had learned the hard way that even the smallest act of disobedience would result in a brutal beating from Kain. That first time she had hidden a few coins in her dresser for a pair of warm winter socks had left her with scars that she would never forget. Since then, she had worked tirelessly to loosen a floorboard to create a safe hiding spot. Kain would never suspect that such a simple girl like Ella could have such cunning tactics. He only ever looked in obvious places, underestimating her at every turn.

Kain’s heavy footsteps echoed through the small room as he stormed out, slamming the door with such force that the window rattled in its frame. Ella couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief as she surveyed the aftermath of his rampage. Clothes and belongings were strewn about the room, evidence of his anger and frustration. She quickly set to work cleaning up the mess, carefully rearranging everything back to its proper place. Her eyes flickered nervously to her closet, where she had hidden her prized bow and quiver among her clothes. She had feared Kain would find it and sell it, so she had stashed it away instead of leaving it with his hunting supplies in the barn. The bow was her most treasured possession, passed down from her father, and she couldn’t bear to part with it. But now she just hoped he wouldn’t notice it amidst the chaos of her room. She had cleverly disguised it as another wooden hanger, carefully layering clothes over it to create the illusion.

With trembling hands, she carefully retrieved her bow and quiver of arrows from beneath the chaos of thrown-about clothes. Her fingers traced over the smooth, polished wood of her trusty weapon, a symbol of her determination and self-sufficiency. For months, she had honed her skills in secret, determined to hunt for food and save money on buying meat. Now, those skills were coming in handy, and she was grateful for them.

As the sun set and darkness engulfed the house, it grew still and silent. She sat on the edge of her bed, heart pounding with anticipation. Every creak and rustle sent shivers down her spine as she waited for what felt like hours. Finally, when she deemed it safe, she rose and donned a protective outfit she had saved for this moment. Its thick fabric and sturdy boots would shield her from the elements as she made her escape. With her bow and supplies resting at her side, she stood before the door, ready to answer the call to freedom that beckoned her forward.

The Fae Lands were a place of legend, shrouded in mystery and whispered about by those who dared not enter. It was said to be cursed, a land where the faeries roamed freely and humans were never seen again. Ella felt her heart race with fear at the mere thought of venturing into such a place, but the thought of spending another moment with Kain was even more terrifying. She would risk anything for a chance at true freedom, and she needed to go where Kain did not dare to follow.

The cottage was eerily quiet, save for the faint sounds of rustling branches and distant hooting owls. She tiptoed across the creaky floorboards, determined to make no noise that might give away her escape. Her small bag hung tightly from her shoulder, holding all she needed for survival: a few meager coins, dried meat and fruit, a waterskin, two pieces of flit, and her trusty hunting knife.

With every step, Ella’s resolve grew stronger. She clutched her bow tightly in one hand, ready to defend herself if necessary. As she reached the back door, she paused momentarily, taking in a deep breath of the cool summer night air. This was it - there was no turning back now. With one final glance behind her, Ella stepped out into the darkness and closed the door with a soft click.

She followed the dirt path to the Fae Lands till it came to an end. The dense forest loomed before her, its towering trees reaching towards the sky like stoic guardians, their gnarled roots peeking out from the earth. The air was thick with mystery and danger, the unknown inhabitants of the forest lurking in the shadows. But she had no choice but to brave this treacherous territory. As she stepped into the dark undergrowth, sharp branches snaked out and snagged at her clothes, leaving small tears and scratches in their wake.

The wet earth squelched beneath her boots as she pressed on, determined to reach her destination. In the distance, a lone owl hooted mournfully, its eerie call echoing through the stillness of the forest like a foreboding omen. The silence here was suffocating, save for the rustling of leaves and the occasional scurrying of tiny creatures. Moonlight filtered through the thick canopy above, casting dappled patterns along the winding path. It was a constant battle against nature’s grip, but she pushed forward with unshakeable determination.

Ella’s heart raced with each step she took, her footsteps crunching on the forest floor. Strange rustling and unfamiliar sounds seemed to surround her, heightening her already raw nerves. She clenched her jaw and pushed forward, refusing to let fear win this battle.

As she continued to trudge through the dark and dense forest, a subtle change began to catch Ella’s attention. A chill crept into her bones, causing goosebumps to rise on her skin. Her breath now emerged in ethereal puffs that seemed to glow in the moonlight, creating an otherworldly aura around her. The air crackled with an energy she couldn’t quite comprehend, making the hair on her arms stand on end.

Every muscle in Ella’s body tensed as her eyes widened in realization. She had finally reached the border between her mundane world and the Fae Lands. The surrounding air seemed to shimmer with an otherworldly energy, drawing her closer to the unknown. Just beyond lay a mesmerizing dreamscape of glistening snow and ice, illuminated by an eerie moonlight that sent shivers down her spine.

The winter wonderland stood in stark contrast to the fading warmth of the forest she had left behind. The trees were thickly coated in sparkling snowflakes, and icicles hung from their branches like delicate crystal chandeliers. As far as the eye could see, the landscape was a pristine white canvas, untouched by human hands.

A palpable sense of magic filled the air, tugging at Ella’s senses and leaving her simultaneously awestruck and terrified. This was a place of both peril and possibility, danger and freedom. With each step she took into this enchanted realm, she felt the weight of her old life fall away, replaced by a sense of wonder and anticipation.

With a deep breath, Ella summoned her courage and took a determined step forward, crossing the threshold into the Fae Lands. The ground beneath her feet was covered in pristine snow, each footfall crunching loudly in the otherwise silent night. She could feel the weight of her decision pressing down on her with every step, a reminder that she was embarking on a journey with no guarantees or guideposts, only her bravery to guide her through the unknown. Despite the fear gnawing at her heart, an undeniable thrill and excitement was coursing through her veins. Leaving behind her old life for a chance at something greater felt both daunting and exhilarating at the same time.

Ella trudged onward through the deep snowdrifts, each step causing her feet to sink deeper into the powdery white blanket. The bitter cold nipped at her exposed cheeks and nose, leaving them rosy and tingling. As she walked, small puffs of breath escaped her lips, disappearing into the frigid air like tiny clouds. The air was so cold that ice crystals formed on her eyelashes and frost clung to every surface. Yet with each laborious step, her dread gave way to wonder.

All around her, the world was transformed. Icy trees glittered under the pale moonlight, their branches bending under the weight of snow that muffled all sound and blanketed everything in a hushed stillness. A symphony of strange and otherworldly sounds echoed in the distance, both familiar and alien all at once.

But it was when Ella gazed up at the night sky that she truly understood the magnitude of this new world she had stumbled upon. She gasped in awe as shimmering auroras danced overhead, their vibrant hues of pink, green, and blue painting the darkness above like a celestial canvas. It was a vision of breathtaking beauty and mystery, unlike anything she had witnessed before. The colors seemed to pulsate with a life force of their own as if they were alive and beckoning her to join in their dance.

A surge of pure joy and adrenaline coursed through her veins, momentarily overpowering the biting cold that gnawed at her skin. She had finally done it. After years of longing, she had escaped. Into a world where she was no longer shackled by the chains of duty or beholden to anyone else’s expectations. Here, she could roam freely and discover on her own terms. With trembling fingers, she removed the glove on her right hand and gazed at the small wooden wedding band that symbolized a life she no longer wanted. A mischievous grin spread across her face as she flung the band far into the sparkling snow.
