Chapter 1
The rain had not stopped for three days when Mara finally decided to open the letter. She sat by the window of the old lighthouse, watching the waves crash against the rocks below, the envelope trembling slightly in her hands. The paper smelled of salt and something older, something she could not quite name.
“You should not have come back,” said the voice behind her. She did not need to turn around to know it was Elias. His boots always announced him before his words did, heavy on the wooden stairs, deliberate as a metronome.
“I never left,” Mara replied, sliding the letter into her coat pocket. “Not really. Some part of me has been standing in this room for twenty years, waiting for the tide to change.”
Elias crossed the room and set a lantern on the table. The flame threw long shadows across the charts pinned to the walls, maps of currents and coastlines that no longer existed. “The harbor master says the ferry will not run again until spring. If you meant to disappear quietly, you picked the wrong season for it.”
She laughed, and the sound surprised them both. “Quiet was never the plan, Elias. I came back because of what our father buried under the east jetty. I came back because the sea gives nothing away for free, and it is time we paid what we owe.”
For a long moment neither of them spoke. The lighthouse beam swept its slow circle overhead, and somewhere far below, a bell buoy rang out in the dark like a patient, tireless witness. Elias pulled a chair from the table and sat down heavily, his face suddenly older in the lantern light.
“Then you had better tell me everything,” he said. “From the beginning. And do not leave out the parts you think will frighten me. The truth has been rusting in this family long enough.”
Mara drew the letter from her pocket and laid it flat on the table between them. The wax seal had been broken long ago, but the handwriting inside was still sharp, still unmistakably their father’s, each line pressed so hard into the page that the words could be read by touch alone, like a message meant for the blind, or for the drowned.
