You’re Three Minutes Late
“Juliet, your assigned colleague will arrive in seven minutes! Confirm if you received the message!”
Static noise!
Juliet only heard the first half of the message in her earpiece; a loud interference disrupted the second half.
Now, she had to guess! Was it one minute or seven minutes?
At this moment, a middle-aged man in a black trench coat was crossing the street toward her. The man wore a hat and a mask, revealing only a pair of menacing eyes.
Juliet pretended not to see him and started walking towards the office building next to her.
She was a rookie cop, having recently graduated. She had been working in the miscellaneous investigations unit and was temporarily assigned to the criminal division due to her unfamiliar face to track a suspect.
The suspect had strong anti-surveillance skills. The mission was going smoothly until Juliet was about to wrap things up. A child almost got hit by a red car running a red light, and Juliet rushed out to pull the child back. When she turned around, she locked eyes with the suspect.
Perhaps her well-trained reflexes raised suspicion in the suspect, who then started following her.
Juliet ended up here, and since her receiver malfunctioned, she had no choice but to enter the office building beside her.
The suspect followed her inside.
Juliet climbed the stairs and looked up to see a sign with the words: Civil Affairs Bureau.
Civil Affairs Bureau?
Isn’t this the place for marriage and divorce?
Taking a deep breath, Juliet braced herself and ascended the last step, only to be blocked by a tall figure.
Instinctively, she stepped to the left, but the figure also moved to the left.
Juliet looked up at the person in front of her. He was tall and imposing, dressed in a well-tailored dark suit. He wore sunglasses, hiding his eyes, but his features were sharp and commanding.
“You’re three minutes late!”
The man suddenly spoke, his voice low and magnetic, yet carrying an immense pressure.
Juliet’s first thought was: Is this a code phrase?
Has the person arranged by her superiors arrived?
Seeing her standing still, the man motioned her to follow.
“Come with me!”
“And don’t be late again! I’m very busy.”
Bill’s brow furrowed, his tone and attitude icy, as if Juliet owed him money.
Juliet instinctively followed him, catching a glimpse of the suspect trailing behind them from the corner of her eye.
“We…”
Juliet started to speak but immediately realized it wasn’t the right time. She couldn’t say too much now. Her superior had arranged for someone to assist her, so she just needed to follow.
But Bill was feeling irritated.
For his mother’s sake, he had come to register a marriage with a woman he had never met.
All because that woman had saved his mother’s life.
His mother insisted on repaying the debt with his marriage as the exchange!
Knowing his mother couldn’t handle much stress, he had to agree. Besides, everyone in the family was watching his marriage closely. If he didn’t agree, someone else would.
However, he had made it clear beforehand: registering the marriage was fine, but he would only offer financial support, without any of the duties of a husband!
He also wouldn’t reveal his true identity, presenting himself as an ordinary person instead.
If he found any flaws in her character after marriage, he would end it immediately.
Bill glanced at Juliet, who was following him, not even bothering to see what she looked like.
To him, she was just a future roommate living under the same roof.
“Your ID. I’ve arranged a fast track.”
Bill, tall and long-legged, walked ahead with an emotionless tone. Juliet, with her 168 cm height, had to jog to keep up.
She looked at Bill’s back in surprise. The colleague her superior arranged to assist her was too handsome!
But he seemed a bit older and his expression was tense. Is he too nervous doing this kind of task for the first time?
Juliet handed her ID to Bill. He didn’t even look at it, passing it directly to the assistant waiting at the elevator.
