Chapter 1: All in Good Time

Jane

Jane winced as the medic tightened the bandage around her arm. The private jet’s luxurious interior felt surreal after the chaos of the past few hours. Across from her sat Viscount Bloomfield, his piercing gaze never leaving her face.

“I can’t believe you didn’t bring Caleb,” Jane spat, anger bubbling up despite her exhaustion. “He should be here.”

Bloomfield’s expression remained impassive. “I’m sure you’re well aware, Miss Dearborn, that our young Caleb might find greater security in accepting his preordained role as the forthcoming Viscount. This particular journey... it’s not a fitting match for every soul, I dare say.”

Before Jane could retort, the jet’s door opened one last time. Marie, Caleb’s assistant from Blackstone & Associates, stepped inside, her usual professional demeanor firmly in place.

“Sir,” she addressed Bloomfield, “I can confirm that Jane’s pack is safe. And we’ve officially verified that Blair Terre is indeed Marco Rossi’s Erasthai.”

Jane’s jaw dropped. “Marie? You’re...”

“A Bloomfield operative,” the Viscount declared with impeccable precision. “Thank you, Marie. You may carry on with your assignment.”

As Marie disembarked, Jane’s mind reeled with the implications. How deep did this web of secrets go?

“I want to start in Scotland,” Jane said firmly, turning back to Bloomfield.

He inclined his head slightly. “As you wish. Your parents, I should inform you, have been relocated to a secure and undisclosed location.”

Jane gazed out the window, fingers absently toying with A.J.’s ring. “I’m ready,” she said softly. “Ready to learn about the Dearborn Legacy, about my visions of the wheel. All of it.”

Bloomfield’s lips curved into a small, measured smile. “All in good time, Miss Dearborn,” he responded as the engines roared to life. “All in good time.”

Caleb

Caleb slumped in the uncomfortable plastic chair, the sterile scent of the hospital’s supernatural wing burning his sensitive nose. Beneath the astringent odor of disinfectant, he could detect the metallic tang of blood, the acrid smell of fear, and the unique scents of his injured friends. The events of the past few hours played on loop in his mind, each replay twisting the knife of guilt deeper into his gut.

A crash and a string of curses echoed down the hallway. Blair’s voice, higher and more frantic than he’d ever heard it, carried clearly to his enhanced hearing.

“What’s happening to me? Marco, make it stop! Everything’s too loud, too bright, too... much!”

Marco’s soothing tones followed, patient despite the clear exhaustion in his voice. “Shh, tesoro. I know it’s overwhelming. Your body’s changing, adapting. Just breathe with me, okay?”

Caleb’s enhanced hearing picked up the rapid beating of Blair’s heart, the tremor in her breath as she struggled to control her newly awakened lycan senses. He could almost feel the bond between Marco and Blair strengthening, their Eresthai connection humming with energy even through the chaos.

He closed his eyes, the weight of responsibility crushing down on him. He’d brought this chaos into their lives, exposed them to dangers they never should have faced. The absence of Jane’s scent, the lack of her steady heartbeat beside him, felt like a physical ache in his chest.

The soft shuffle of slippered feet made him look up. Teddy, still pale and moving gingerly, eased himself into the chair beside Caleb. His hospital gown was partially covered by a thin robe, and the bandage on his forehead stood out starkly against his skin. The usual sparkle in Teddy’s eyes was dimmed by pain and worry, but there was a determination there that Caleb recognized all too well.

“You look like shit,” Teddy said, his attempt at levity falling flat.

Caleb managed a weak chuckle, the sound hollow even to his own ears. “Speak for yourself.”

They sat in silence for a moment, the beeps and whirs of hospital equipment providing a somber backdrop. Caleb’s enhanced senses picked up on every nuance - the slight hitch in Teddy’s breath that betrayed his discomfort, the faint tremor in his hands as he fidgeted with the hem of his robe.

“I’m sorry,” Caleb finally said, his voice barely above a whisper. “I never meant for any of you to get hurt. This is all my fault.”

Teddy’s hand came to rest on Caleb’s shoulder, surprisingly strong despite his injuries. “Don’t you dare, mate. We’re in this together, remember? Pack and all that rubbish.”

Caleb met his friend’s gaze, seeing the unwavering loyalty there. He could smell the mix of emotions rolling off Teddy - concern, determination, and something else... a heady cocktail of pheromones that Caleb had come to associate with thoughts of Isabella.

Teddy took a deep breath, wincing slightly at the movement. “Look, I need to tell you something,” he said. “Life’s too bloody short for secrets. I’m in love with Isabella. Have been for ages, really.”

Despite everything, Caleb felt a smile tugging at his lips. “I know, Ted. We all know.”

Teddy rolled his eyes, a hint of his usual humor returning. “Yes, well, the point is this - you need to find Jane. Do whatever it takes, the same way Marco’s in there helping Blair through her change, the same way I’m not giving up on Isabella. Love’s worth fighting for, mate.”

Caleb could hear the raw emotion in Teddy’s voice, could smell the mix of love, fear, and hope radiating from him. He thought about Teddy and Isabella’s story - their years of banter and near-misses, the tension that had always simmered just beneath the surface. There was a whole epic tale there, one that deserved its own telling.

Similarly, he could sense the profound changes happening between Marco and Blair. Their bond, newly formed and already tested by fire, was a force to be reckoned with. Caleb made a mental note to check on them later, knowing their journey was just beginning.

“You don’t have to give up on me,” Isabella’s voice cut in, making both men jump. She stood in the doorway, her arm in a sling but her eyes bright. The scent of antiseptic clung to her, but beneath it, Caleb could detect her unique fragrance - a mix of lavender and old books that had always reminded him of libraries.

Teddy’s face flushed bright red, his heart rate spiking. “Izzy, I- how long have you been standing there?”

Instead of answering, Isabella crossed the room in three quick strides. She bent down, cupping Teddy’s face gently in her good hand, and kissed him softly. Caleb’s enhanced senses picked up on the mingling of their scents, the way their heartbeats synchronized. It was the beginning of something beautiful, he realized.

Caleb stood, a bittersweet smile on his face as he watched his friends finally come together. He slipped out of the room, giving them privacy, and made his way to a quieter corner of the wing. As he passed Isabella’s room, he caught the faint scent of Amanda, her steady breathing indicating she was still fast asleep.

His fingers found the Bloomfield ring, twisting it nervously as he pulled out his phone. The weight of it reminded him of his heritage, of the destiny he’d been avoiding. Taking a deep breath, he dialed the number he’d memorized but never used.

“Viscount Bloomfield? It’s Caleb. I need your help. It’s time I learned everything - about my heritage, about the Dearborn Legacy, all of it. I have to find Jane.”

As Caleb listened to Bloomfield’s response, his resolve hardened. The bond between him and Jane, though stretched thin by distance, still hummed faintly in his chest. He clung to that connection, using it to fuel his determination.

Whatever it took, he would find Jane and unravel the mystery that had torn them apart. The wheel was turning, and Caleb was determined to be the one controlling its spin. As he ended the call with Bloomfield, Caleb felt a shift within himself. He was no longer just Caleb Blomqvist, supernatural lawyer. He was a man on a mission, a lycan embracing his destiny, and a mate who would move heaven and earth to be reunited with his other half.

The hospital corridor stretched before him, filled with the scents and sounds of his injured pack. But beyond that, Caleb could almost smell the promise of adventure, of danger, and of love. It was time to step into his role as future Viscount, to harness the power of the Bloomfield legacy, and to find Jane - no matter where the wheel of fate might take them.

Viscount Edmund Bloomfield

The year was 1945, and young Edmund Bloomfield sat rigidly beside his father in a hastily converted meeting room in Bern, Switzerland. The usual grandeur of the Lycan Royal Court’s Parisian headquarters had been traded for the practical, if somewhat austere, surroundings of a Swiss bank’s conference room. Heavy velvet drapes in deep crimson covered the windows, muffling the sounds of a city trying to return to normalcy after years of war. The scent of old money and fresh paint mingled in the air, a stark reminder of their displacement.

Edmund’s keen eyes roamed the room, taking in every detail. The ornate wooden table, its surface marred by centuries of use, seemed out of place among the modern furnishings. It was one of the few items they’d managed to salvage from Paris, a symbol of continuity in these tumultuous times. Intricate carvings of wolves and ancient runes adorned its legs, telling the story of their kind in silent, enduring wood.

He longed to see the original meeting chamber in Paris, with its centuries-old tapestries and the weight of history in every stone. His father had described it often enough - a room as old as modern civilization itself, where Lycans had guided the course of human events from the shadows for generations. The young Bloomfield’s fingers twitched, imagining the feel of those ancient walls beneath his touch.

Around the table sat a diverse group of Lycan nobility, their human titles and professions as varied as their nationalities. Lord Blackwood, a British earl and renowned physicist, sat ramrod straight across from Dr. Ekaterina Volkov, a Russian surgeon whose hospital had been on the front lines of the Eastern Front. Her eyes, though tired, held a steely determination. Herr Schmidt, a German schoolteacher with haunted eyes, avoided eye contact with Monsieur Dupont, a French resistance fighter turned politician, whose scarred hands spoke of battles both seen and unseen.

The tension in the room was palpable as they discussed the aftermath of the war. The supernatural world, like its human counterpart, had been deeply divided. Lycans who had once been brothers now sat on opposite sides of an ideological chasm, the bonds of pack stretched to breaking point by human conflicts.

“It is of vital importance, gentlemen, that we swiftly shift our focus towards the vampiric faction entrenched within the Soviet Union,” Lord Blackwood proclaimed, his polished English accent imbuing each syllable with an air of urgency. “Their sacrilegious pact with Stalin has thrown into disarray the delicate balance we have assiduously maintained across the ages. The night-born progeny grow bold, labouring under the misguided belief that the chaotic shroud of warfare will serve to conceal their nefarious actions.”

Dr. Volkov’s eyes flashed, a low growl rumbling in her chest. “And what of the atrocities committed in the name of your precious balance, Blackwood? My people have suffered enough without-”

“Cease,” commanded Edmund’s father, Viscount Alistair Bloomfield, his voice resonating with an unmistakable authority of leadership. “Our purpose here is not to re-examine the battles of the past, but rather to chart a course for the future. The world of mankind stands precariously on the precipice of an uncharted epoch, and it is our duty to steer it from behind the scenes, as has been our custom.“”

A murmur of agreement rippled through the room, but Edmund could smell the lingering resentment and fear. His enhanced senses picked up on every shifted glance, every quickened heartbeat. The war had left scars on all of them, some visible, others hidden deep beneath the surface.

Herr Schmidt, his voice like gravel underfoot, broke his silence for the first time since the gathering had commenced. “Und vat of ze other courts? Ze Fae, zey have pulled back entirely, ja? Und ze Witches...” His words tapered off, the thought too daunting to fully articulate. “Und let us not forget about ze Daemon court,” he added after a moment’s pause.

A suffocating hush engulfed the room as each member sank into an abyss of chilling memories—echoes of the supernatural beings who had been caught in the crossfire of human conflicts. The horrors inflicted upon the Daemons were strikingly similar to another dark chapter in human history: the witch trials. Yet, their suffering also had roots in an equally devastating event—the Inquisition.

The witch trials of centuries past were but a faint echo compared to the orchestrated obliteration brought about by modern warfare. This historical atrocity against Daemons and Witches mirrored humanity’s own brutalities, where fear and loathing drove people to commit unspeakable acts against those deemed different.

This grim parallel served as a poignant reminder of how deeply such prejudices could run and how catastrophic they had proven for both humans and supernatural beings alike.

A commotion at the door silenced any response. Edmund’s nostrils flared, catching an unfamiliar scent - smoke, herbs, and something ancient and powerful. The scent of prophecy itself. The door swung open, revealing a woman who appeared to be in her early forties, though her eyes spoke of far greater age. Her dark hair was streaked with silver, and her olive skin bore the faintest traces of numbers tattooed on her forearm.

“Miss Zalman,” Edmund’s father breathed, rising to his feet. The rest of the council followed suit, a ripple of unease passing through the room. Even the usually unflappable Lord Blackwood looked shaken.

Edmund recognized her immediately from the whispered stories - Mara Zalman, one of the most powerful Seers, a survivor of the concentration camps. Her presence here, sent by the decimated Seer Royal Court, could only mean one thing: a vision of great importance.

Mara’s eyes, a swirling mix of green and gold, scanned the room, finally settling on Edmund. He felt a chill run down his spine as she pointed directly at him, her voice resonating with power that seemed to shake the very foundations of the building.

“You,” she said, her accent a blend of countless languages and lifetimes. “Your future son will be the key. The wheel turns, and with it, the fate of our world.”

The room erupted into murmurs of shock and speculation. Edmund sat frozen, his mind reeling. His father’s hand gripped his shoulder, a gesture of both comfort and warning.

“Speak plainly, Seer,” Viscount Bloomfield demanded, though Edmund could hear the faintest tremor in his voice. “What have you Seen?”

Mara’s eyes never left Edmund as she spoke, her words carrying the weight of destiny. “A wheel, ancient and terrible. Faces of the past, present, and future spinning in an endless dance. And at its center, a lion and a wolf, bound by fate and choice.”

She paused, her gaze sweeping the room once more. “The old orders crumble, and new powers rise. The balance we have maintained for millennia teeters on the edge of chaos. And in the heart of it all stands the son of Bloomfield and a daughter of an ancient line long thought lost.”

Edmund felt the eyes of every Lycan in the room upon him, the weight of their expectations and fears pressing down like a physical force. His mind raced with questions - a son? An ancient line? And what was this wheel she spoke of?

As Mara prepared to share more of her vision, Edmund couldn’t shake the feeling that his life - and the lives of generations to come - was about to change forever. The wheel was turning, and he was powerless to stop it.

Rome, November 10, 1989.

The eternal city hummed with an energy that even mortals could sense - change was in the air. Edmund Bloomfield, his youthful appearance belying the decades he’d lived, made his way through the winding cobblestone streets. His tailored suit, a deep navy that highlighted his broad shoulders and lean frame, stood out among the casually dressed students and tourists.

The meeting of the Supernatural Royal Courts had left him drained, both physically and emotionally. The weight of secrets and prophecies pressed down on him, making each step feel like a monumental effort. He ran a hand through his chestnut hair, streaked with premature gray at the temples - a testament to the burdens he carried.

The Diplomatic Supernatural Royal Court had convened in a hidden courtyard, shielded from mortal eyes by magic as old as Rome itself. At its center stood the Arbor Vitae, a massive oak tree whose branches seemed to reach into other realms. Its roots, visible through the translucent ground, formed an intricate pattern - the very wheel Mara had spoken of all those years ago.

Edmund’s mind drifted back to that fateful day in 1945. Mara, her eyes wild with the power of her vision, pointing directly at him. ”Your future son will be the key,” she had said, her words etching themselves into his very soul. The Lycan Royal Court had acted swiftly, secreting Mara away to the redwood forests of Evergreen, California. They had worked tirelessly to rebuild the other supernatural courts, always mindful of the prophecy that hung over them like a sword of Damocles.

Edmund had come to understand that the wheel was not a physical construct, but an emblematic representation of power dynamics among supernatural factions. As representatives gathered around the Arbor Vitae, engaging in fervent discussions over the fall of the Berlin Wall and its potential fallout, Edmund noted subtle fluctuations in the tree’s aura. The segment linked with Lycans glowed with a gentle gold, indicating their current supremacy. The space for Seers was empty, a chilling reminder of their dwindling population still licking wounds from past battles.

“The mortals are growing restless,” Elias, who spoke for both Vampires & Vampyres, stated smoothly yet assertively. “This...unification. It threatens the Tenebris Accords.”

The mere utterance of Tenebris Accords made Edmund shiver internally. This age-old pact, sealed with blood and stamped with magic darker than cosmic abysses—committed all supernatural beings to secrecy. It prohibited them from revealing their existence or interfering directly in human affairs under penalty far worse than death itself. Its name alone could cause even the strongest creatures to tremble.

Just as Celeste, the representative for the Witches, prepared to speak up, an older man beat her to it. His voice was as rough as his native Scottish highlands and he carried himself with an air of authority that silenced everyone else.

“Perhaps,” Duncan—the Daemon delegate—began, his deep Scottish accent echoing around them before Celeste could interject, “we might need to reconsider this Accord.”

Celeste, nervously twirled her amulet between her fingers and built on Duncan’s point: “It is time to reevaluate the Accords. The world is evolving. The old ways-”

“The old ways have kept us safe for millennia,” Edmund had found himself saying, his voice carrying the authority of his station. “We must adapt, yes, but not at the cost of exposure. The golden age of supernatural revelation remains a dream, for now.”

Now, as he hurried through the Roman streets, Edmund’s mind was awhirl with possibilities and dangers. The world was changing rapidly, and the supernatural realm would need to change with it or risk exposure. But how to do so without violating the Tenebris Accords? And what of Mara’s prophecy?

Lost in thought, he didn’t notice the young woman until it was too late. They collided, papers flying everywhere. “Mi dispiace!” a feminine voice exclaimed. Edmund looked up, apology on his lips, and froze.

She was beautiful in a way that transcended mere physical appearance. Her blonde hair caught the late afternoon sun, creating a halo effect that made Edmund’s breath catch. But it was her eyes that truly captivated him - a swirling mix of blue and green that seemed to hold the secrets of the sea. Her scent, a perfect blend of lavender and old books, made his wolf stir with an interest he hadn’t felt in decades.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, helping her gather her scattered notes. His enhanced vision caught glimpses of complex linguistic diagrams and historical references. “Are you alright, Miss...?”

“Blomqvist,” she supplied, a slight Swedish accent coloring her words. “Lila Blomqvist. I’m studying linguistics and ancient history at the university here.”

As their hands touched, Edmund felt a jolt of electricity that had nothing to do with static and everything to do with fate. In that moment, he knew his life was about to change irrevocably. The wheel was turning once again, and Lila Blomqvist would play a crucial role in the prophecy he’d carried for so long.

“Edmund Bloomfield,” he introduced himself, unable to look away from her captivating gaze. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Lila.”

Lila smiled, a slight blush coloring her cheeks. “The pleasure is mine, Mr. Bloomfield. Are you visiting Rome?”

Edmund hesitated, years of secrecy warring with an inexplicable desire to be honest with this woman. “I’m here on... business,” he said finally. “But I find myself with some unexpected free time. Perhaps you’d allow me to buy you a coffee? As an apology for my clumsiness.”

Lila’s smile widened, sending Edmund’s heart into a flutter he hadn’t experienced in centuries. “I’d like that,” she said. “I know a little place just around the corner. They make the best espresso in all of Rome.”

As they walked together, Edmund felt a sense of rightness settle over him. Whatever challenges lay ahead - the prophecy, the Tenebris Accords, the shifting balance of supernatural power - he would face them. And somehow, he knew, Lila Blomqvist would be by his side when he did.

The wheel was turning, faster now than ever before. And Edmund Bloomfield, for the first time in decades, found himself looking forward to where it might lead.

Jane

One year after the car accident

Jane stood at the window of the sleek conference room, her gaze fixed on the Stockholm skyline. Her reflection in the glass was almost unrecognizable - gone were the soft curves and hesitant posture. In their place stood a woman hardened by a year of intense training and constant vigilance. Her once-long hair was now cropped short, dyed a deep auburn that glinted like fire in the Scandinavian sun. A thin scar slowly healing ran along her left cheekbone, a reminder of a close call in Prague three months ago. She felt lucky that it would be healed in only a couple months.

Her enhanced lycan senses picked up every detail of the room behind her - the subtle scratching of pens on paper, the faint scent of coffee and anxiety, the steady heartbeats of the Bloomfield operatives gathered around the table. Jane’s own heart remained calm, a testament to the control she’d gained over her newfound abilities.

“Miss Martens,” a crisp voice called out. Jane turned, responding to the alias she’d worn like a second skin for the past year. Olivia Martens - art dealer, world traveler, and most importantly, a woman with no connection to Jane Dearborn or the supernatural world.

“Yes, Mr. Eriksson?” she replied, her voice carrying a hint of a British accent she’d perfected during her time in London.

The silver-haired man at the head of the table fixed her with a penetrating gaze. “We’ve finalized the arrangements for your move to Zurich next week. It will be your last stop before Bangkok.”

Jane nodded, a mix of anticipation and trepidation swirling in her gut. Bangkok. Where Dr. Amara waited with answers about the Dearborn Legacy - the truth of her heritage that had been revealed to her over the past year.

She thought back to the first time Viscount Bloomfield had told her about the legacy. How every woman in her line had played a pivotal role in shaping the world, both human and supernatural. Dearborn daughters scattered across history, each connected to one of the supernatural royal courts - Fae, Werewolves, Vampires, Witches, Seers, Dameons, and Lycans.

Bloomfield leaned forward, his gaze intense and commanding. “Miss Dearborn, the legacy you now bear is of profound significance, rooted deeply in both history and destiny. You may know us as the Dearborns, but our true origins lie with the Deorwynne line—an ancient and venerable name that has largely faded from modern memory.”

Jane listened attentively, her curiosity piqued.

“The Deorwynne lineage was once a beacon of influence in the supernatural world,” Bloomfield continued, his tone rich with historical weight. “The family’s power and responsibility were legendary, guiding the balance between the human and supernatural realms. However, for reasons of safety and to obscure our true nature from those who would threaten us, the name was changed to Dearborn upon our ancestors’ emigration to America.”

He paused, ensuring Jane grasped the gravity of the history he recounted. “Your particular role in this lineage is momentous. You are the first Deorwynne Daughter in many generations to fully engage with the supernatural world, and your transition into the Lycan kind has unlocked abilities and potentials long dormant. The Eresthai bond you now share has further strengthened these gifts, revealing powers that have been largely unrecognized in your line for centuries.”

Jane’s eyes widened as she processed the enormity of her inheritance.

“Dr. Amara Charkaborty, a distinguished scholar of Lycan history, has extensively studied the Deorwynne legacy and its connections to Lycan history. Her research provides invaluable insights into the evolution of our lineage and its impact on both human and supernatural events.”

Bloomfield’s gaze held Jane’s with unwavering focus. “Each daughter of the Dearborn line has historically had a significant impact—whether advancing medicine, negotiating peace, or, unfortunately, contributing to conflicts and suffering. Your current abilities and unique heritage place you at a crucial juncture. The choices you make will not only reflect upon you but will also shape the continuing legacy of your family.”

He leaned back slightly, his expression a blend of solemnity and encouragement. “The Dearborn legacy rests upon your shoulders, Miss Dearborn. You wield the potential for tremendous good or profound change. It is a tremendous responsibility, and it is up to you to navigate this path wisely. Your actions will determine whether this legacy continues to safeguard the world or becomes a force of upheaval.”

Jane absorbed Bloomfield’s words, the weight of her heritage and responsibilities settling heavily upon her.

The weight of that legacy pressed down on Jane now as she listened to the final briefing. Her training had pushed her to limits she never knew she had - physically, mentally, and in control of her lycan abilities. But was it enough? Would she be ready for whatever awaited her in Bangkok?

As the meeting concluded, Jane gathered her things and made her way out of the nondescript office building. The crisp Stockholm air filled her lungs as she stepped onto the street, her enhanced senses immediately cataloging her surroundings. The scent of cinnamon from a nearby bakery, the distant rumble of the subway, the chatter of pedestrians enjoying the rare sunny day.

And then, a scent that made her freeze mid-step. Pine and rain, with an undercurrent of something wild and familiar. Caleb.

Jane’s heart raced as her eyes scanned the crowded street. There, across the intersection, stood a man she almost didn’t recognize. Caleb had changed too - his posture straight and commanding, his suit impeccably tailored to his broader frame. He exuded an aura of power that even humans seemed to unconsciously respond to, giving him a wide berth on the sidewalk.

For a moment, Jane’s entire being ached to run to him, to throw herself into his arms and never let go. The Erasthai bond between them, dormant for so long, flared to life with an intensity that took her breath away.

But as Caleb’s head began to turn in her direction, Jane’s training kicked in. She wasn’t ready. She couldn’t risk being seen, couldn’t risk undoing a year’s worth of preparation and sacrifice. With a pang of regret that felt like physical pain, she turned and melted into the crowd, using every skill she’d learned to disappear.

As she hurried back to her temporary apartment, Jane’s mind raced. Caleb was here, in Stockholm. He was embracing his Bloomfield heritage, becoming the man she’d seen in her visions. But what did it mean for her? For them?

Jane shook her head, forcing herself to focus. She had a mission, a destiny to fulfill. Bangkok awaited, and with it, the answers she’d been seeking. Whatever fate had in store for her and Caleb, it would have to wait. The wheel was turning, and Jane was determined to be the one controlling its spin.

Caleb

Caleb Blomqvist strode purposefully through the streets of Stockholm, his enhanced senses alert to every nuance of the bustling city. The crisp autumn air carried a myriad of scents - freshly baked kanelbullar from a nearby café, the sharp tang of saltwater from the harbor, and the underlying musk of thousands of humans going about their day. His tailored suit, a deep charcoal that accentuated his broader shoulders and more muscular frame, marked him as a man of importance.

As he approached the towering glass edifice of his law firm’s Stockholm branch, Caleb allowed himself a moment of reflection. The past year had been a crucible, forging him into a man he barely recognized. Gone was the hesitant lawyer, unsure of his place in the supernatural world. In his place stood the heir to the Bloomfield legacy, a future Viscount with the weight of centuries on his shoulders.

Caleb’s mind drifted to his father, Viscount Edmund Bloomfield, and the maddeningly slow pace at which he doled out information. “In due time, son,” he would say, his eyes holding secrets Caleb burned to understand. “The wheel turns at its own pace.”

The wheel. Always the wheel. Caleb suppressed a growl of frustration as he entered the building, nodding curtly to the receptionist who scrambled to open the door for him.

The meeting with the high-profile client - a shipping magnate with ties to the Fae court - went smoothly. Caleb’s newfound confidence and deeper understanding of supernatural politics served him well. As the client left, clearly impressed, Caleb felt a fleeting sense of satisfaction. But it was quickly overshadowed by the ever-present ache in his chest - the empty space where Jane should be.

Jane. Her name was a prayer and a curse, a balm and a wound. The Erasthai bond between them, stretched thin by distance and time, was a constant, dull pain. Caleb’s wolf howled for its mate, a mournful sound that echoed in the recesses of his mind.

As he left the office, intent on handling some diplomatic matters for the Lycan court, a scent on the wind stopped him in his tracks. Vanilla and lavender, with an undercurrent of wild energy that could only belong to one person. Jane.

Caleb’s head whipped around, his enhanced vision scanning the crowded street. There - a flash of auburn hair, a familiar silhouette. His heart raced, the bond flaring to life with an intensity that left him breathless.

“Jane!” he called out, already moving. But the figure was melting into the crowd with a grace that seemed almost supernatural.

Caleb pushed through the throng of people, his senses straining to catch another glimpse, another whiff of that beloved scent. But it was gone, lost in the sea of humanity that flowed around him.

He stood there, in the middle of the sidewalk, people parting around him like a river around a boulder. Had it really been her? Or was his mind, desperate for any connection, playing cruel tricks?

The ache in his chest intensified, a reminder of all he’d lost and all he still sought to understand. Caleb straightened his shoulders, pushing the pain down deep. He had responsibilities now, a legacy to uphold. Whatever game Jane was playing, whatever secrets his father still kept, Caleb would unravel it all.

As he turned to continue his day’s tasks, Caleb made a silent vow. He would find Jane. He would uncover the truth about the wheel, about the Bloomfield legacy, about everything. And when he did, nothing in heaven or earth would keep them apart again.

The wheel was turning, and Caleb Blomqvist intended to be the one controlling its spin. For himself, for Jane, and for a future that seemed to hang in the balance of forces he was only beginning to comprehend.

Jane

3 years since the car accident

Jane stood on the balcony of her Bangkok apartment, the humid air heavy with the scent of spices and tropical flowers. Her enhanced lycan senses picked up the distant chatter of street vendors, the honking of tuk-tuks, and the gentle chiming of temple bells. Three years had passed since the fateful Halloween night that had changed everything, two of which she’d spent in this vibrant, chaotic city under Dr. Amara Chakraborty’s tutelage.

“Olivia!” Dr. Amara’s voice called from inside. “Come, it’s time for your final lesson.” Jane turned from the city view and entered the room.

Dr. Amara stood in the center, her silver-streaked hair neatly pinned up, her dark eyes glinting with both wisdom and a touch of mischief. “Final lesson?” Jane asked, raising an eyebrow. “Are you sending me off, Dr. Charkaborty?”

Dr. Amara chuckled softly, shaking her head. “Not quite. You’ve absorbed all I can teach you. Now, it’s time for you to apply that knowledge in the real world.”

Jane’s fingers traced the intricate tattoo on her left wrist—a wheel with spokes representing the seven supernatural factions. “I’m not sure I’m ready,” she admitted quietly. Dr. Amara’s gaze softened.

“You are more than ready. Remember when you first arrived? You struggled to control your powers and grasp the complexities of the supernatural world.” Jane nodded, recalling her early days in Bangkok, a whirlwind of confusion and fear. Under Dr. Amara’s guidance, she had grown significantly.

“Tell me again,” Dr. Amara said, settling into the plush sofa, “what is the Dearborn Legacy?” Jane took a deep breath, her voice steady as she recited the mantra that had guided her.

“The Dearborn Legacy is a lineage of power and responsibility. Each woman in our line has played a pivotal role in shaping the balance between the human and supernatural realms. We are the last descendants of the Deorwynne, an ancient name that faded into obscurity as our ancestors fled to America for protection. Our choices affect the balance between all seven factions—Fae, Werewolves, Vampires/Vampyres, Witches, Seers, Daemons, and Lycans. Our actions can influence this balance, for better or worse.”

Dr. Amara nodded approvingly. “And the wheel?”

“It represents the balance of power among these supernatural factions,” Jane continued. “It’s constantly turning and shifting. The Tenebris Accords were established to maintain this balance and keep supernaturals hidden from the human world. But now, the Accords are weakening, and the wheel is spinning faster than ever.”

“Excellent,” Dr. Amara said. “Now, let’s delve deeper. Provide me with examples from your family’s history—the Deorwynne lineage now known as the Dearborn Legacy—where your ancestors’ actions have tipped the scales in either the human world or the supernatural world. Include names, dates, and the events that marked these shifts. Explain both positive and negative impacts.”

Jane thought for a moment and began recounting:

“In 1614, Lady Elspeth Deorwynne played a crucial role in brokering the Treaty of Whitehall, which ended a major conflict between rival Fae factions in Scotland. This peace treaty prevented widespread devastation in both the human and supernatural realms and stabilized the Fae presence in Britain for decades.” She paused, gathering her thoughts.

“In contrast, in 1935, Margaret Dearborn’s involvement in a covert operation during the rise of fascism in Europe led to an escalation of supernatural tensions. Her actions indirectly contributed to a series of violent conflicts among factions, worsening the global situation and creating further unrest.”

Dr. Amara listened intently, her expression reflecting the gravity of Jane’s examples. “These instances illustrate how the choices made by the Deorwynne Daughters have had profound impacts. Now, explain the Tenebris Accords in more detail. Where do the representatives of the supernatural royal courts meet?”

Jane nodded, her gaze focused. “The Tenebris Accords are a set of agreements designed to maintain the balance of power among the supernatural factions and keep their existence hidden from the human world. They were created to prevent conflicts and ensure a stable coexistence.”

“The supernatural royal court representatives convene in a secret location,” Jane continued. “They meet in Rome, in a hidden courtyard. The appearance of this courtyard is known only to those who are representatives of their respective supernatural royal courts. No one outside these factions knows what it looks like.”

Dr. Amara’s eyes twinkled with approval. “You’ve grasped the essence of your role and the intricate web of history and politics that comes with it. Remember, the wheel of balance is delicate. Your actions will influence its rotation, shaping the fate of both the human and supernatural worlds.”

Jane nodded, understanding the weight of her heritage and the responsibilities that lay ahead.

“I’ll do my best to uphold the legacy and navigate the challenges.”

Dr. Amara’s gaze softened with encouragement. “I know you will. The supernatural world needs you now more than ever.”

As if on cue, Jane’s phone pinged. The message from Viscount Bloomfield was brief but sent her heart racing: ”Blair Terre has reached out. She and Marco Rossi are to be married in San Francisco. She’s requesting your presence. It’s time, Jane. You’re ready to return."

Jane’s hands trembled slightly as she reread the message. “Blair and Marco are getting married,” she said, her voice thick with emotion. “Bloomfield says it’s time to go back.”

Dr. Amara nodded, unsurprised. “The wheel turns, Jane. This is your moment.”

Jane’s thoughts immediately turned to Caleb. Three years. Three long years of separation, of tamping down the Erasthai bond that hummed constantly in the back of her mind. “What about Caleb?” she asked, voicing her deepest fear. “What if... what if he’s moved on?”

Dr. Amara’s eyes softened with understanding. “The Erasthai bond is not so easily broken, my dear. But remember, it’s about choice as much as destiny. You’ve both grown, changed. You’ll need to choose each other again, with open eyes and full hearts.”

Jane took a deep breath, the scents of Bangkok filling her lungs one last time. She’d made her choice years ago, stepping into this world of shadows and ancient power. Now it was time to bring that knowledge, that strength, back to where it all began.

“Okay,” she said, straightening her shoulders. “I’m ready.”

Dr. Amara smiled, pride shining in her eyes. “You are. But Jane, remember - knowledge is power, but wisdom is knowing when to use it. Be careful who you trust with what you’ve learned here.”

Jane nodded, the gravity of her situation settling over her. As she began to pack, her mind raced with possibilities and fears. San Francisco. Blair and Marco’s wedding. Facing her friends, her family, after three years of silence.

And Caleb... the thought of seeing him again made her heart race and her palms sweat.

“Dr. Amara,” Jane said, pausing in her packing. “Thank you. For everything.”

The older woman pulled Jane into a tight hug. “You’re welcome, my dear. Now go. The wheel is turning, and you have a part to play.”

As Jane prepared to leave the apartment that had been her sanctuary for two years, she felt a mix of excitement and trepidation. The time for hiding was over. It was time to return, to reclaim her place in a world that had moved on without her.

Whatever challenges lay ahead - reunions, explanations, and the ever-present threat lurking in the shadows - Jane Dearborn was ready to face them head-on. The next chapter of her story was about to begin, and she couldn’t wait to see how it would unfold.

Caleb

3 years since the Car Accident

Jönköping, Sweden

Caleb groaned, his head pounding as he stumbled into the kitchen of his mother Lila’s house. The midsummer celebrations had been... intense, to say the least. His enhanced lycan senses, usually a blessing, were currently a curse. Every sound seemed amplified tenfold, and the smell of coffee brewing was almost enough to make him retch.

“Fuck me sideways,” he muttered, collapsing onto a stool at the kitchen island. “I’m never drinking again.”

Isabella, looking annoyingly fresh and put-together, smirked at him from where she was preparing tea. “That’s what you said last year, darling. And the year before that. You’d think with your lycan metabolism, you’d handle your alcohol better.”

Caleb flipped her off, then immediately regretted the movement as it sent a fresh wave of nausea through him. “Why aren’t you suffering?” he grumbled, his enhanced hearing picking up on her steady heartbeat and the faint, rapid flutter that he knew belonged to the growing pup inside her.

Isabella’s hand went unconsciously to her still-flat stomach. “Perks of pregnancy, I suppose. Though the morning sickness is its own special kind of hell.”

Caleb’s eyes softened as he looked at his friend. The mating mark on her shoulder, still new and slightly raised, was a testament to the changes in all their lives. Isabella, now a lycan herself, mated to Teddy and carrying their first child. It was a far cry from the prim and proper British socialite he’d first met years ago.

“How’s the little pup doing?” he asked, his voice gentle despite his hangover.

Isabella beamed, her hand still resting on her belly. “Growing like a weed, according to the doctor. Teddy’s already talking about buying a miniature kilt.”

Caleb snorted, then winced at the pain it caused. “Of course he is. The Duke of Argyll junior needs to look the part, after all.”

They shared a laugh, the sound oddly comforting in the quiet kitchen. Caleb’s mind drifted, as it often did in these moments of peace, to Jane. Three years since the accident, three years of searching and hoping and slowly losing faith. The Erasthai bond between them was a constant ache, a reminder of what he’d lost and what he still longed to find.

“You’re thinking about her again,” Isabella said softly, setting a cup of tea in front of him.

Caleb didn’t bother denying it. “I thought I saw her in Stockholm, you know. Two years ago. But she vanished before I could be sure.”

Isabella’s hand found his, squeezing gently. “We’ll find her, Caleb. She’s out there somewhere.”

“Speaking of finding people,” Isabella continued, her tone deliberately light, “have you heard from Marco recently? About the wedding?”

Caleb nodded, grateful for the change of subject. “Yeah, it’s all set for next month in San Francisco. Blair’s apparently gone full bridezilla. Poor Marco doesn’t know whether to be terrified or turned on.”

Isabella laughed, the sound like tinkling bells. “Oh, I can imagine. Blair always did have a flair for the dramatic. But they’re good together, aren’t they? Like two halves of a whole.”

“Yeah,” Caleb said softly, the ache in his chest intensifying. “They are.”

Before the conversation could turn melancholy again, the back door burst open, admitting a laughing Teddy and a smiling Lila Blomqvist.

“Morning, you lazy bastards!” Teddy boomed, his voice far too cheerful for Caleb’s aching head. “Beautiful day for a swim, don’t you think?”

“Inside voice, love,” Isabella chided gently, but her eyes were full of affection.

Lila moved to the stove, refilling the kettle. “How are you feeling, älskling?” she asked Caleb, her voice soft with motherly concern. Her eyes, as always, held a spark of mischief that reminded Caleb how she’d kept the secret of the supernatural world for so long.

“Like I’ve been run over by a herd of elk,” Caleb groaned. “Repeatedly.”

Lila chuckled, running a soothing hand through his hair. “Just like your father after his first midsummer celebration. Some things never change.”

Teddy clapped him on the back, ignoring Caleb’s wince. “Nothing a good swim won’t cure. Race you to the water?”

Despite his hangover, Caleb felt a spark of competitive spirit ignite. “You’re on, your grace,” he said, emphasizing Teddy’s new title with a smirk.

In a flurry of movement that would have been impossible for humans to follow, Caleb and Teddy were out the door, stripping off shirts as they ran towards the lake. Their lycan speed turned the world into a blur of green and blue.

Behind them, they could hear Isabella and Lila laughing as they followed at a more sedate pace. Caleb’s heart swelled with a bittersweet joy. This was his family now - Teddy and Isabella, soon to be parents and nobility.

His mother, who had always known about the supernatural world and had guided him with quiet wisdom. And him, the future Viscount Bloomfield, embracing a destiny he’d once run from.

As they reached the water’s edge, Caleb allowed himself a moment of pure, uncomplicated happiness. But as he dove into the cool lake, the ache in his chest reminded him that something - someone - was still missing.

"I’ll find you, Jane," he thought, surfacing with a gasp. ”Wherever you are, I’ll find you."

The wheel was turning, faster now than ever before. And as Caleb engaged in a splash war with Teddy, his mother and Isabella cheering from the shore, he couldn’t shake the feeling that everything was about to change. Again. The Rossi wedding loomed on the horizon, a beacon of hope and a harbinger of change. Whatever came next, Caleb knew he’d face it head-on, with his family by his side and Jane in his heart.
