Chapter 1

Born in hell, has never ended well for anyone, not even for those who loved the darkness and misery that it can cause. No one here ever lives to see a fairytale ending with love and kindness but one day, I know someone will come along to change, it may not happen in my lifetime but that is not what you have come to hear. You want to hear about the fairytale born in hell.

Before we get to the present you need to understand the past. forgive me if you already know that good and evil never get along. Although that is mostly true, there is always one exception to any rule and in this story, the exception Is Me, The son of a dark fairy called Drake who died in battle against the greatest evil.

The war raged on for years just because a dark fairy wanted more than life had given her. She had given herself the title of queen of darkness. She was ruthless and heartless. She tried to bring the end of the world to get what she wanted. She almost had her way until a handsome prince with blonde shoulder-length hair and a golden tan from all his time spent in the sun stood up and led a rebellion against her. His name was Rylie

He had won my trust by saving my life from some soldiers who wanted to kill me just for being a dark fairy but he had seemed to notice something different about me. Pretty soon I started falling for him and eventually, I even started helping him by passing information and sabotaging her army where I could. Eventually, She started to suspect that I was up to something. One day she had one of her spies follow me to confirm her fears. Her spy told her that I had indeed met someone in the woods, he thought he was a scout from the prince's camp. She ordered me to go to the camp and end the life of the prince, she doubted that I would go through with her orders. So she put a spell of control over me and forced me to go and do her bidding. Rage flowed through my veins as I stood over the prince whom I loved and gave me a moment of strength that allowed me to fight her spell for a moment and as my arm fell, I managed to change the direction of the dagger back towards my heart, and then everything went black.

Now when a dark fairy dies, they do not leave behind a body, the darkness and shadows claim the body and take it back to the shadow realm to start a new life from the shadow it was first born from, leaving no trace that a fairy had ever died. Even in old age, this is how the life of a shadow creature works. This makes people think we are immortal.

When I woke up, all I saw was rock and molten lava and a dark cloud on the horizon and in an instant, I knew where I was. I was back in my homeland. Alone for as long as the eye could see. So I did the only sensible thing, I started walking heading to the cloud. How long had I been walking for days, weeks or even years, the horizon seemed impossibly far but the dark cloud was getting closer, soon the cloud was just out of reach and all I could do was think about my last sight of the human world was that of a handsome prince who was kind to everyone, even those who had it bad in life. He once said

"No one should be held accountable for their parent's actions"

My mother hated me for one fact, and that fact is that I went against my nature and acted good. Which in the end was my downfall brought about by my mother. While my mom was the worst dark fairy known to humankind, I had not done anything evil, maybe used my magic for a prank or two but I never hurt anyone. This made my mom think I was weak and someday let her down and now I guess you can say she was right.

Then I heard it, a noise that brought me back to reality. It was a laugh that sounded more like a cackle, the laugh that made my childhood a living hell. It was my mother's laugh. It sent chills like ice cubes down my spine and I wanted to run away and hide but I could not, it was like my feet were frozen to the ground. Something she could do and has done to me in the past anytime I dared disobey her. Then I heard her speak

"You are finally awake you little runt, Love makes you weak my son. Look at you dead and forgotten while the prince goes around acting like the hero who defeated both of us". Her words were like venom in my ears

"You are a liar" I yelled back with tears in my eyes. I could not believe her. I would not believe her. I needed something to believe in to keep me going. Then she showed me a vision of the prince kissing some girl who was wearing a crown, then they laughed and Rylie said

"Can you believe that I managed to trick that stupid dark fairy into thinking I would ever love a creature of darkness"

It broke me and I fell to my knees. I thought he loved me. How could I be so wrong? It felt as if my heart was turning to stone, any of the happiness that I still had left was now gone, leaving only rage and despair in its place

"He used you to try to bring me down," my mother said, "but look what happened, he and I are both alive while you are a mere memory. Years later I find you wasted". With every word, my will crumpled and I could feel my mother's evil seep back into my soul, normally I used to try and fight her back but I was too weak this time and I embraced it. I wanted to make Prince Rylie pay for using me.

"Welcome back to the shadows my son, We will make everyone sorry that they thought they could get rid of us" With these words, smoke and shadows embraced me. For the first I felt at one with the darkness, I used the pain to strengthen the magic I vowed never to use for evil. I felt it change me, My eyes once coloured red and orange now completely black, and my skin as pale as the snow now had a grey tinge to it, Revenge motivated me, spite making me laugh. I wanted him to feel the pain I felt when I saw him kissing that princess and turning me into a joke. That is all I wanted, I don't care about the rest of the world but for now, I had to play along with my mother. Although many would think my plan to curse him was simple and petty, but I could only think of immediate revenge.

For weeks I used the shadows to hide, wanting for the right moment to strike but he was never alone even when he slept he was protected by magic runes to stop someone from sneaking into his room. Then finally one day, my chance came in the form of a ball. It was announced that the King was throwing a ball in hopes of Ryile finding a queen. I used magic to change my appearance to look like someone I thought he would love. Trying to remember what that princess from my mom's vision looked like, I did my best to copy it to increase my chances with the prince with Long flowing blonde hair, red rosy cheeks and blue eyes with a tall and slender frame. As my appearance changed I left an ache in my stomach, I did not know if it was due to shame or anger.

Dressed in a light blue gown that moved like air. I walked into the castle with all the other guests I had time to stop and marvel at the inside of the castle that I never got to see in my last life. There were columns of white marble holding up the roof and stairs. The roof was painted dark blue with constellations and other stars decorating the void. Banners of silk in gold and purple hung on the walls behind shields of the strongest knights and royal family members that protected the lands. The walls and floors were made of a grey stone that I did not recognize mainly due to the fact it was shiny enough to see my reflection.

There were many guests in attendance and many young girls who all seemed to want a chance with the prince. most of them stood around watching others dance. I stood by the food table to scope out any of the biggest rivals to foil my plan. The spread of food that was laid out on one of the many tables dotted around the room that was right next to me was extravagant. Cakes off all flavours and heights, pies and tarts and sconces. Eventually, as the night wore on it was my turn to dance with the prince and he came over and offered me his hand then led me to the dance floor. When the music started an act of petty revenge came to mind that made me smile, I knew he thought I was smiling because I was dancing with him but in truth, it was because I kept stepping on his feet on purpose. After every time I stood on his foot, I apologised. After dancing the rest of the night away, it was time to call an end to the party. Sadly I told Rylie that if I did not leave soon I would not get home before the sun rose the next morning. He instead invited me to stay the night in one of the many empty rooms in the castle.

He offered to show me to the room and said that a servant would bring me something to sleep in and if I needed something else or wanted to talk, his room was just down the hall.

Once I was sure that most of the servants and the king were asleep. I slowly and quietly made my way to his room and with one gentle knock, I walked in and saw him sitting by the window looking out, he looked like an angel without a care in the world but the pain in my heart broke that image and the laughter from the vision that my mom showed me rang in my head. I remembered why I was here, to make him hurt and take away his love. As he turned around and smiled at me, I used my magic which was strengthened by my mother to finally take him down. The first thing I did was to make him blind so he could not see anyone he loved. Next, I cursed him so that his sword would always be too heavy for him to yield in battle. To top it off, I cursed him to have a short life so he would not have a lifetime filled with love and happiness. By the age of 26, he would slowly and painfully start to die. A small part of me still loved him and I unknowingly made sure there was a loophole in the magic to lift the curses but now knowing his true nature of playing with people's emotions, I doubted he would ever find it. As I stood there, holding the dagger that took my life to spare him. I thought about just stabbing him and being done with it, but a sudden noise made me stop. Someone was coming and by the sound of it, they were in a rush. A servant boy had come to deliver a message to the prince, fear fills his eyes as he sees me standing over the prince

"Your Highness" he yelled, "watch out".

"What have you done?" Prince Rylie yelled at me. Blackness was all he could see. The servant ran to his side but before I fled into the shadows I uttered two more curses, the first was on the servant, taking away his ability to speak the second was a plague to the land to make them barren. After that, I do not know what was said nor did I care I just wanted to run away and never be seen again.

Standing in the shadows on a hill overlooking Rylie's kingdom, I watched as the sun rose but that was not all I saw, I laughed as a large dark cloud that was surely my mom heading towards the place to finish the battle. Alarm bells ring, waking the whole kingdom. Their doom was nigh and I did not care. Using shadows to make myself invisible. I went to watch Rylie struggle to defend himself, on my way there I stopped to curse some unsuspecting knight or someone trying to help save the kingdom. I even stopped and thought about damaging some houses but one of them was an orphanage, I am not that much of a monster so I decided not to. I went to Rylie's side. Only to see my mother going straight for him and I knew at that moment that this is what she wanted all along. Once again She used me to get what she wanted and what she wanted was the death of the prince who defeated her.

Seeing the panic on Rylie's face, I knew I had to go to his side and try to explain what I had done to him and see if he could forgive me for everything I did.

"I am so sorry, this was all my fault, I should have tried harder to fight the force of her dark magic or not taken revenge," I said in a whisper now feeling miserable

"Drake is that you," he said so softly I almost did not hear him, "I thought I had lost you during the last battle when you did not show up at the meeting point". I was shocked that he still remembered me.

"Yeah, I was gone but my Mother brought me back," I said, "She took advantage of my love for you and manipulated my feelings " I watched his face as I said this, the look of despair on his face almost broke my heart again

"I never loved another the way I loved you," he said feeling around for something "Where are you, I can't see you or anything"

"That was my fault, I wanted You to hurt the way I did but I was wrong. It is not the only thing I did to you, I am the reason you can't lift your sword" I said softly with tears in my eyes " Will you ever forgive me?" I added. Instead of answering me, He pulled me close and kissed me deeply. At that moment nothing mattered, it was him and myself. The kiss felt like it lasted forever. Once our lungs burned for air the kiss ended and he looked at me and I looked at him and in a flash, I knew the love he had for me was strong and true and it was enough to break all the curses that I placed on him.

"You looked different," He said looking at me"What happened?" and I told him how I gave in to the darkness. Once I was done he said, "I am so sorry you had to go through all that by yourself but you are back now and can step out of the shadows". I knew he was right and with his love, I could bet my mother's influence. It would be an uphill battle but first, we needed to defeat her once and for all but I did not know how. Then it hit me almost like some of the rubble from the castle that fell as a new war raged on. The answer was love that is why she could not defeat him alone, she needed me to take his life because together we could defeat her.

Steel and magic working together could do almost anything and now we needed it to defeat the darkest evil our land had ever seen. The battle was all a big blur until we found my mother. She was in the middle of the battle looking for Rylie or me, probably to kill either one of us. Men, women or children, no one was spared from her, magic. Those who were not killed were either turned to stone or into animals or forced to face their allies.

"Mother," I yelled, running towards her with Rylie right behind me, "Your time is over"

She started laughing at me the same laugh as when she found me in the shadow realm

"You dare turn against me child, I can end your existence just like I did last time." I ignored her and kept running until I could strike her down with a sword, with a cruel smile she clicked her fingers and smoke started swirling around me. I fell to my knees in pain the air being ripped right out of my lungs, Then my skin started turning darker. Rylie ran to my side and tried to help but the only thing he could do was hold me. I looked into those beautiful blue eyes

"Do not leave me to die alone" I said in a weak voice at this his eyes showed hatred but not toward me. With a painful shriek, he threw his sword. It was not direct but it was enough to break her concentration and the spell she was using to drain my life was broken. He went over to pick up his sword and then proceeded to fight her. I knew he would not last long but I needed some time to gain some strength before I could use my magic. I did the only thing that came to mind, I sent a blot of darkness toward my mother. Just as I was about to pass out I heard one last scream but this time it was from my mother. The blot of darkness I shot at her, hit her in the chest at the exact moment when Ryile's sword struck her in the same spot. That was the end she knew her fate was sealed. A death like the one she suffered was the only death that the shadowland could not heal. She was gone for good and all her dark magic was undone. Most of her wrongs were righted. The only thing that could not be fixed was all the deaths she caused.

Slowly as the kingdom started rebuilding, Rylie took me to a quiet spot on a hill, a spot I knew all too well, it was the spot where we first met. The view of the kingdom from here was indescribable, you could see the whole kingdom from this hill. I turned to say something to Rylie only to find him down on one knee, holding a ring. So naturally, I said yes. We kissed as the sun started to set.

Heroes or Villains are all the same after their stories are done, the book is closed. The ending is written by the victor and the loser gets forgotten. It is enough to turn anyone to the dark side.
