CHAPTER ONE

For the past months Jaqui had searched her heart and soul for the solution to her problem, and had finally settled on the right thing to do, for everyone. Both, her, and her husband were not happy in their marriage, and to be honest she had got married for the wrong reason. Daniel was happy, as he had a wife he could show off and behind doors, mentally abuse, but Jaqui, had been standing up for herself , much to his dislike. They had been married for 5 years, 3 of which had been liveable. Suddenly he had come home, from visiting her family, and in one day, had changed. He had become abusive, belittling her, and not letting her sleep, when she stood up to him. Slowly, he had worn her down to the point, where, she could no longer tolerate to be around him. She had gone back to her old love, nursing, re-educated herself, and had got her Nursing Certificate updated. She loved the country life, milking cows, breeding Jersey’s Cattle, meeting people, both in New Zealand and overseas. She travelled overseas every year, getting overseas buyers to come to their annual sale of their surplus cattle. She had always loved the great outdoors, but there was more to life than being in a loveless marriage. She felt the pull of her soul, to do something with her life. What? She had no idea. She felt she was being pulled away from what was not working for her any more, to something new.

All her life, she had always felt like a square peg, trying to fit into a round hole. Her family of 4 sisters never included her. Her parents, were not like other parents. Her Mother was the youngest of 3, and was always angry, controlling, unhappy, and never supportive. Jaqui, as a child was a loner, preferring to go off on her own, and listen to the Angel Music she heard, and their guidance. She never told anyone, as she had heard her Mother’s opinion on the subject, often. Jaqui’s grandfather, was always loving and kind to her, listening to her questions, often giving her a loving hug, and being with her. He took her with him, at every opportunity, but he had died when Jaqui was 15 years old. Losing him had been so devastating to her, as she felt so abandoned, very alone. She really was on her own, within a family unit, for the first time in her life. She had her friend Carla Martini, who she had met while going to High School. They had become very close, like sisters, had gone through nursing together, been there for each other.

Jaqui had met Daniel during the last months of training, and married him, a year later. He had appeared to love her, and treated her like his Queen. Then, one day he came home, and for no apparent reason, had berated her to the point, he had her in tears. A total mystery. She was absolutely stunned, no apology, no explanation, nothing. She had liked Daniel up to that day, but slowly she had begun to see him, in his true self, to the point that she no longer slept in the marital bed, and could not stand him, near her, or to touch her. She had become lonely in her marriage, and had begun to search her soul for answers. The Angels had begun to sing their beautiful harmonies to soothe her troubled heart, and had whispered messages in her ear. She had followed their guidance, going back to nursing and completing a Nursing Degree, had learned Reiki Healing, opening the healing channels. She needed to step out on her own, rediscover herself again, and have faith in the Angels, and listen.

The one good thing, was that they had had no children. She had suffered 2 miscarriages, the last one a year ago. Daniel had not wanted children at the beginning, but had demanded that she give him an heir. When she lost the last child, at 6 months into the term, she was so traumatised by the loss, she had not allowed him to touch her again. She had looked deep within herself, and now she was ready to carry out her decision.

Daniel was out on the farm. Jaqui, rang her lawyer, and made an appointment for the following morning, before she went on duty at the hospital. Glenn Ross, had been an old school friend, and they had stayed in touch with each other over the years. She packed her bag, and loaded the car up with her possessions. She had never been a person of material possessions, but she took all the things she had bought over the few years, and family inheritances. She was due on duty in a few hours, but she had decided she was leaving, a decision made for both of them.

Jaqui waited for Daniel to come in from the farm. Her sense of honour would not allow her to leave without telling him what she had decided, and why. He came in and sat down at the table, opposite her.

“Daniel, I have something to say to you. You will listen and hear me.” she said firmly

“What could you say that I have to, or want to hear?” he said sarcastically

“Daniel, I am divorcing you. Neither of us are happy. I don’t love you, and you have never really loved me, or you would never have treated me like you have. I can no longer allow you to abuse me, as I am worthy of a better life, than what I have received here. I am leaving now, and nothing you have to say will change my mind.” Jaqui said

“When did you decide this?” he asked, completely taken by surprise

“I have not been happy in a long while, and I am going to divorce you. I have put things in place, so you will be hearing from Glenn in the future. I want no more contact with you, and can only hope you will not fight me on this, because I am warning you, I will fight, if I have to.” Jaqui said

“Why can’t we talk about it?” he asked

“No Daniel, I am not putting up with the way you treat me, anymore. You have treated me so badly, and it is escalating. What is next? Did you expect me to put up with your abuse, forever?”

“Jaqui, I love you,” he said, and blushed at his obvious lie.

Jaqui picked up her car keys, “If that is what you call love Daniel, what we have been living through, then I don’t want anything to do with love or you.” and walked out to her car, and drove away.

She drove into Whangarei, and got herself a room, at the first Motel she came to. She felt a great weight fall off her shoulders, as she got ready for work.

Carla Martini, her best friend and adopted sister, was waiting for her, as she parked her car.

“Hi Carla”

“Hi Jaqui, you look happier than I have seen you in a long time. What has happened?“.

“Yes, I am. Going to see Glenn tomorrow. I have told Daniel I am divorcing him. Not a happy person, but now he can find someone else, if he hasn’t already.”

“Okay. Have you got a place to stay?”

“At a motel. It will be enough for now.”

“Come on. Work calls. You are staying with me, end of any arguments. ”

They raced up the stairs to the ward, and settled in to their duties. Working together, they always sensed each other’s thoughts and demeanour. An excellent team, and were often put together for this reason. When they finished working, they picked up Jaqui’s possessions and went home to Carla’s. They talked into the night, making tentative plans for their future ventures.

Jaqui went to see Glenn, setting plans in motion, for the divorce. Jaqui explained to Glenn that she was thinking of going overseas, and was looking into the nursing positions available in Canada. Carla decided she was going with Jaqui, so they both had lots to sort out, references, their resignations, booking their flights and renewing their passports.

Jaqui found a position in a nursing agency from Vancouver, and Carla, a position in the Medical Hospital in the centre of Vancouver. All their plans went smoothly, and they found an agency to rent out Carla’s home, and their excitement for their new lives set everything in motion.
