I Died on My Wedding Night
I died on my wedding night. Yeah, you heard that right.
On the day of our wedding, my husband ditched me at the altar, turning me into the laughingstock of the entire town. Talk about a nightmare, right?
When I was being attacked by some psycho killer and called for help, my dear husband told me to hurry up and die. His exact words were, “Just die already. Once you’re gone, no one will be around to upset Zoey anymore.” Charming, isn’t he?
As I lay dying, I saw fireworks lighting up the sky. They were supposed to be for our wedding celebration, but instead, he was using them to impress another girl.
I thought that once this “stumbling block” (aka me) was out of the picture, he could finally be with my sister without any guilt. But get this - when he found out my bones were made into prayer beads that he touched day and night, my husband lost his mind. Karma’s a bitch, huh?
Before I blacked out, I made one last phone call. The other end was noisy, then I heard a man’s ice-cold voice: “Ruby, are you done with your theatrics? I already gave you a fairy tale wedding. I’m just keeping Zoey company. What more do you want?”
Blood was gushing out of me, and the killer was looming over me like I was some insignificant bug. He knew I was about to kick the bucket and couldn’t do anything about it.
But I wasn’t ready to give up. With my last ounce of strength, I pleaded, “Micah, save me!”
Micah Shark cut me off, clearly annoyed: “Enough with these games. I’m sick of your act.”
“I’m not lying. Someone’s trying to kill me...” I gasped.
He let out a cold laugh. “Ruby, you’ve faked illnesses before. What’s your angle this time? Are you that desperate for attention? You’re already Mrs. Shark. Do you have to drive Zoey to her grave to be happy?”
His mocking words cut deeper than the icy wind. Seeing my blood staining my wedding dress, I knew my time was up. I swallowed my goodbye and gave up fighting. My voice was barely a whisper: “But Zoey is alive and well, while I... I’m dying.”
“Then hurry up and die. Once you’re gone, you won’t be able to make Zoey angry anymore,” he spat.
Before he hung up, I heard a sickeningly sweet voice: ”The fireworks show is about to start, Mickey.”
Micah’s voice faded away, replaced by the howling wind. My blood-covered phone slipped from my hand, crashing onto the riverbank.
Water splashed into my eyes, turning into hot tears that rolled down my cheeks. In the falling snow, tiny lights appeared in the dark sky - drones twinkling like a river of stars.
A deafening explosion filled the air as countless fireworks burst in my fading vision. He had spent six months planning this spectacular show for our wedding, only to use it to win over another woman.
Someone sent me a photo. In it, my husband was holding another woman in his arms against the backdrop of dazzling fireworks. His usually cold lips were curved into a smile.
As they basked in their happiness, I closed my eyes forever.
They say after death, you go to the underworld to be reborn. If there really is a next life, I never want to meet Micah Shark again.
But fate had other plans. When I regained consciousness, I saw them kissing under a brilliant starry sky. My husband, Micah Shark, and my sister, Zoey.
“Micah, you can’t do this!” I screamed, rushing towards them. But my fingers passed right through their bodies.
Looking down at my nearly transparent form, I finally realized I was dead. Somehow, my spirit had ended up here with them.
Watching them kiss, I discovered that even the dead can feel heartbreak. It was supposed to be me by his side. Not long ago, Micah had sworn that he only saw Zoey as a sister, that I was the only one he’d ever loved.
Another firework exploded overhead, startling Micah. He suddenly pushed Zoey away.
"Zoey, we can’t do this,” he said.
Zoey’s face was still flushed, looking particularly alluring in the firelight. She bit her lip and said, ”Mickey, I didn’t mean to... I just couldn’t help myself.”
Micah stroked her head. “It’s okay, I’m not blaming you. Let me make a call.”
I watched him take out his phone and dial my number. I felt a chill. Twenty years of friendship, and in the end, it meant nothing. He only thought of me after getting cozy with Zoey.
The phone rang and rang. Of course, there was no answer.
You see, I used to keep my phone on 24/7 for Micah. I’d always pick up before the third ring. But Micah, I’m dead now. How can a dead person answer the phone?
Micah’s brow furrowed. ”Zoey, I’m going to check the location Ruby sent.”
Oh, so he finally remembered me? Before I died, I had sent Micah my location by the river. If he came now, he could at least collect my body. Who knows what that psycho killer might do to my corpse if left too long.
A small hand grabbed his wrist. Zoey looked at him with puppy dog eyes. ”Mickey, can’t you stay with me?”
Micah hesitated. “But Ruby...”
"Ruby has always loved to put on an act. Remember when she said she was having surgery? You dropped billions in business to rush back, only to find her perfectly fine. And that time she claimed someone was stalking her? Nothing came of that either.”
"Ruby’s been spoiled rotten since childhood. She loves playing these tricks. She’s the precious princess. Who would dare harm her?”
Her words erased Micah’s doubts. He rubbed his tired brow. “If only Ruby were half as sensible as you.”
Zoey smiled. I smiled too, but bitterly. Wasn’t it Micah who once said, “Only unloved children need to be sensible. My Ruby should be wild and free.“?
Micah didn’t come looking for me after all. Instead, he took Zoey to our marital home. I tried to block the doorway, not wanting to let her pass. But it was futile - Zoey walked right through me, laughing.
It seems whether I’m alive or dead, I can’t stop her.
Zoey came out of the bathroom wearing my nightgown - the surprise I had planned for our wedding night. When Micah saw her curves through the thin fabric, his Adam’s apple bobbed, and his eyes darkened. I knew those signs all too well - that’s how he looked when he was turned on.
Seeing the chemistry between them, I felt furious and heartbroken.
"Zoey, that’s Ruby’s clothes,” Micah reminded her.
“I know.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. ”Mickey,I know you stopped loving Ruby a long time ago. The one you love is me, right?”
“Zoey, that’s enough,” Micah said coldly.
Zoey’s tears fell in big drops. She looked like an abandoned puppy as she whimpered, “After tonight, you’ll be my brother-in-law. I’m not greedy, just one night, okay? I want to be your woman.”
“I can give you anything else, but not this!” Micah pushed her away.
Zoey stomped her foot. “Fine, if you don’t want me, I’ll give myself to someone else. A delivery guy, a janitor, a male model, even a beggar under the bridge!”
“Don’t be ridiculous!”
“You don’t want me anyway, and you won’t even grant me this one wish. I...”
Micah pulled her into his arms, silencing her with a kiss.
I screamed and wailed beside them, but no one heard me.
Micah, the man I had loved for over a decade, made love to my sister in what was supposed to be our marital bed.
I watched the whole night as Micah unleashed all his pent-up passion.
The morning sunlight fell on Zoey’s mark-covered body as she shyly burrowed into Micah’s arms.
Micah had regained his senses and looked somewhat regretful. ”Zoey, last night we...”
I laughed bitterly. What’s done is done. Regretting it now won’t change anything. It’s all ruined!
“Don’t worry, brother. I won’t tell Ruby. From now on, you’re my brother-in-law. I’ll go study abroad and stay out of your lives.”
Micah frowned. “Who said you should leave? You...”
Before he could finish, his phone rang. He answered it.
A serious male voice came through: “Mr. Shark, this morning someone fished out a designer wedding dress from the river. We’ve confirmed it’s the one your wife wore yesterday. Please come to the police station to assist with the investigation.”
