Chapter 1
The first time Emily saw him, her heart skipped a beat. His eyes were a piercing blue, the kind that made her feel exposed as if he could see right through her. He didn’t seem the least bit shy about his interest—he sat next to her with purpose, like he belonged there. He was friends with Kyle, so it wasn’t strange that he’d insert himself into the conversation, into her space. But the way he looked at her made it clear: his intentions were anything but casual.
Emily had known Kyle for months. They’d met through work, and though they were close, it had never been romantic. Kyle was successful, having climbed his way up in the business world and recently launched his own web design company. Andrew, though—he was different. She’d heard bits and pieces about him from Kyle: Andrew hadn’t finished college, had married young, had kids, and was already divorced by the time he was in his mid-twenties. He worked nights as a security guard, while Kyle thrived in a suit and tie.
But here he was, at Kyle’s launch party, standing out from the crowd with his quiet confidence. Emily had noticed him a few times before, usually when she was leaving work late, and he was starting his shift. They hadn’t spoken much, just exchanged polite nods. But tonight, something shifted.
Kyle threw his arm around her, teasing her about something she couldn’t entirely focus on because Andrew was watching. She felt a strange flutter in her stomach when she caught his gaze, a mixture of curiosity and something else—something more dangerous.
He had no reason to think she’d be interested in him, a single dad with a messy life, but she saw something in him that intrigued her. There was an edge to him, a ruggedness, as if life hadn’t been easy, but he’d survived.
"Hey, Kyle, Mark!" Andrew’s voice cut through the noise of the party as he approached.
Kyle smiled and waved him over. "When’d you get here, man?"
"Just now," Andrew said, but his eyes were on Emily.
She held his gaze for a moment longer than she intended and smiled, feeling a little more vulnerable under his scrutiny.
"Hi," she said, her voice softer than usual.
"Andrew," he introduced himself, extending his hand. His grip was firm, and he didn’t look away.
"Emily," she replied, shaking his hand. Something in the way he held her gaze was intense, and she glanced away, feeling the heat rise to her cheeks.
It was a lot to take in—a little too much. She felt that pull deep down, unsettling and exciting all at once.
"Drinks?" he asked, his voice low, his expression unreadable.
She nodded, allowing him to lead her away from the group. A shy smile tugged at her lips as she walked beside him.
"So, Emily," he said as they approached the bar, "tell me about yourself."
"There’s not much to tell," she said, her voice light, but her mind racing.
"Oh, I doubt that," he replied as ordering their drinks.
Emily felt her pulse quicken as they stood at the bar, the hum of the party fading into the background. Andrew’s presence had an unexpected weight, and she found herself both drawn to and unnerved by it. She wasn’t used to feeling this off balance around someone, especially not at a party where she usually felt in control, surrounded by friends.
He handed her a drink, his fingers brushing against hers. It was a small gesture, but it sent a ripple through her. She caught herself staring at him again, at how his shirt clung to his broad shoulders, the stubble along his jawline, and how he seemed so at ease.
"So, Kyle said you knew each other from college?" Andrew asked, taking a sip from his glass. His eyes didn’t leave hers.
"Yeah, we were in some of the same classes," she said, smiling at the memory. "It’s funny how people take such different paths after college. Kyle's always been the ambitious one. I went into marketing, and we reconnected when he started working with my firm."
Andrew nodded, listening, but there was something deeper behind his eyes, as if he was absorbing every word, considering her in a way that made her feel seen—really seen—not just as Kyle's friend.
"And you? What about you?" she asked, turning the conversation back on him. She was curious—about more than just the surface level details.
He shrugged, glancing away for the first time, and she noticed how the confidence faltered just slightly. "I dropped out of college when my girlfriend got pregnant. It wasn’t part of the plan, but life happens, right?"
She nodded, but didn’t interrupt. She could tell there was more.
"I started working in roofing, did whatever I could to provide for the family," he continued. "Got married, had three kids... then divorced. Now, I’m just trying to keep things together, working as a security guard at night. It’s not glamorous, but it’s steady."
Emily was silent for a moment, processing everything he said. His story wasn’t like the polished versions she was used to hearing from guys in her circle, but something was refreshing about that. He wasn’t trying to impress her with titles or success; he was just being real. And she had her own secrets in her past.
"That sounds like a lot," she said, her voice soft but genuine. "Three kids? How old are they?"
"Seven, five, and two," he replied, a hint of a smile finally appearing. "They’re my world, even if things didn’t work out with their mom."
Emily smiled back. "That must keep you busy."
"You could say that." He chuckled, but it wasn’t forced. For the first time, the tension between them seemed to ease.
There was a pause, but it wasn’t awkward. Instead, it felt like they were letting the conversation breathe, settling into the moment.
"Look," Andrew said, his voice lowering as he leaned in slightly, "I know you and Kyle are close, and I don’t want to make things weird, but... I couldn’t help noticing you. I’ve been noticing you, actually, for a while now."
Emily felt her heart beat a little faster again. There it was, laid out plainly. No games, no pretenses. Just honesty.
"I don’t know what you’ve heard, but... Kyle and I are just friends," she said, surprising even herself with the boldness of her words. "And maybe I’ve been noticing you too."
For a moment, Andrew just stared at her as if trying to figure out if she was serious. A slow, genuine smile spread across his face when he realized she was.
"Well," he said, leaning back slightly, "I didn’t see that coming."
Emily laughed softly.
As the night went on, they talked more—about their lives, pasts, and hopes for the future. The connection between them deepened with each word, and by the time the party began winding down, it felt like they had known each other far longer than just a few hours.
As they stood near the door, saying their goodbyes, Andrew hesitated momentarily. Then, with a quiet confidence that was entirely his, he asked, "Would you want to grab a coffee sometime? Just us?"
Emily smiled, feeling that familiar flutter in her chest. "I’d like that."
“Tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow’s perfect. 10:00?” She asked.
“See you then!” He hugged her tightly.
As Andrew stepped out the door, Kyle hovered nearby, his gaze lingering on the exchange. He had been watching them all night, unsure what to make of the growing connection between Emily and Andrew. He had always been the one to take Emily home after these events, and tonight was no exception. But there was something different about it now. He couldn’t shake the unease.
When Andrew finally disappeared into the night, Kyle approached Emily, forcing a casual tone.
"Hey," he said, his hands stuffed into his pockets.
“Hi!” Emily’s cheeks were flushed, and her smile still lingered. Kyle noticed it immediately and felt a pang of irritation rise in his chest.
"So, you and Andrew... seemed to get along well," he remarked, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye as they walked toward the parking garage.
Emily nodded, her eyes bright. "Yeah, he’s really great."
Kyle’s jaw tightened at her response. He wasn’t sure what he felt, but something about her giddiness set him on edge. "So... you liked him?" The words came out stiffer than he intended.
"He’s nice," Emily said, still caught in the afterglow of their conversation. "We’re going to have coffee tomorrow."
Kyle’s stomach twisted. "Oh," was all he could manage. His mind raced with a thousand things he wanted to say, but nothing seemed right. It felt like a punch he wasn’t prepared for.
They walked silently for a moment, the air between them awkward and thick with unspoken tension. As they reached his car, Kyle opened the passenger door for her and tried to mask his discomfort. During the drive, they chatted about the party, the people, and the conversations. Emily mentioned Andrew a few more times, each like a needle pricking at Kyle’s nerves, though he tried to keep his expression neutral.
He listened, but his thoughts were spiraling. He had always liked Emily—more than liked her, really. Over the past six months, he had built their friendship, hoping she would eventually see him as something more. He’d been subtle, sure, but it was deliberate. He didn’t want to rush things, and he certainly didn’t want to scare her away. But now, listening to her talk about Andrew, he wondered if his attempts had been too subtle. Had he waited too long?
"Andrew is an awesome guy," Kyle finally said, forcing himself to sound casual, though inside, he felt anything but.
"Yeah, he is," Emily said, glancing at him. She didn’t seem to notice the tension in his voice. "We’ll see how it goes."
Kyle’s grip on the steering wheel tightened, and he nodded, though he had no idea how to respond. The words felt stuck in his throat, a mix of frustration and jealousy that he couldn’t entirely untangle.
When they reached her apartment, Kyle pulled up to the curb and parked the car. There was a heaviness in the air that neither of them acknowledged. Emily thanked him for the ride, her usual bright smile not quite reaching her eyes this time. Kyle couldn’t shake the feeling that something was slipping through his fingers, something he had been carefully trying to build.
As she unbuckled her seatbelt, Kyle felt a surge of panic. He had to say something, anything, to let her know how he felt before it was too late. But the words refused to come. Instead, he just watched as she opened the door and stepped out.
"Goodnight, Kyle," she said, giving him a small wave before heading up the steps to her apartment.
—
He sat there for a moment, staring at the empty seat beside him, his mind a chaotic mess. He had always thought there would be more time—more chances to make his feelings clear. But now, with Andrew in the picture, it felt like the clock was ticking faster than he could keep up.
As he drove away, the quiet of the car felt suffocating. He replayed the night in his head over and over. Andrew. Andrew had asked her out. It wasn’t just a friendly coffee but a date, plain and simple. Kyle felt like he was watching something he wanted being ripped away from him right before his eyes, and the helplessness gnawed at him.
He needed to talk to Andrew. Not to assert some kind of dominance but to clear the air. Andrew had to know that he had feelings for Emily. They had grown close too, and maybe—just maybe—Andrew would back off if he knew how Kyle felt. He wasn’t sure if it would matter to Andrew, but he hoped it would.
Kyle knew it wasn’t just about looks or charm, though he could see why Emily was interested in Andrew. Andrew was fit, confident, and good-looking. Kyle, on the other hand, had always considered himself average. He had hoped his personality, his patience, and his genuine care for her would be enough to win her over.
But now, with Andrew in the picture, everything felt uncertain. He had been planning to pursue Emily more seriously, especially now that he was leaving the firm. But Andrew’s sudden presence changed everything.
Kyle sat at the island in his apartment, staring down at his phone. Andrew’s number was pulled up on the screen, his thumb hovering over the call button. His mind swirled with frustration and uncertainty. He wasn’t even sure what he wanted to say, but the thought of Andrew and Emily together upset him.
He set the phone down, leaning back in his chair, arms crossed. For a few long minutes, he just watched the screen as if waiting for the right words to come to him. But nothing did. The apartment felt too quiet, the weight of the silence pressing in on him.
Finally, he let out a frustrated sigh and grabbed the phone again, pressing the call button before he could talk himself out of it.
Andrew answered after a few rings, his voice casual, almost too happy for Kyle’s taste. “Hey, man!”
Kyle clenched his jaw, already feeling the irritation bubbling up. “Hey,” he said, trying to keep his voice even though discomfort crept in. He wasn’t sure if this was a mistake.
Andrew didn’t seem to notice the tension. "Thanks for inviting me to the party," he said, his tone light and easy. "Your friend Emily and I really hit it off."
Kyle felt the words hit like a punch to the gut, even though he’d known it was coming. Andrew was gloating, and that smugness in his voice only made it worse.
"Yeah, I saw," Kyle replied, his voice tight. He tried to mask the frustration, but it wasn’t working. "Look, about that…"
Andrew didn’t let him finish. "She’s something else, huh? We’re meeting up for coffee tomorrow. I think she’s into me." There was a hint of pride in Andrew’s voice that sent a fresh wave of irritation through Kyle.
Kyle gripped the edge of the counter, trying to steady himself. His heart pounded in his chest, and for a moment, he considered hanging up, leaving this whole conversation behind. But he couldn’t. Not now.
"Yeah, about Emily," Kyle said, his voice lower, more controlled this time. "I just—look, I don’t know if you know, but I’ve been... I’ve had feelings for her for a while. We’ve been close. I was just kind of waiting for the right time."
There was a pause on the other end. Kyle could hear Andrew shifting, the sound of his breath catching slightly. When he spoke again, his voice was cautious. "Wait, you like Emily?"
Kyle ran a hand through his hair, staring down at the cold surface of the island. "Yeah. I do. I have for a while, man."
The silence on the other end of the line stretched longer than Kyle was comfortable with. He could almost picture Andrew processing what he’d just said, maybe even realizing how blind he’d been to what was going on.
"Well..." Andrew finally spoke, but his tone had shifted—there was no gloating now. "I didn’t know, Kyle. I mean, you never said anything."
"I know," Kyle admitted, his frustration deflating slightly. "I didn’t want to rush things or make it weird between us, but I’ve been trying to get closer to her. And now, with you jumping in… I don’t know, it feels like I never even had a chance."
Andrew let out a long breath, clearly thinking it over. "I get it, man. But... she’s her own person, you know? It’s not really about who gets to her first. It’s about what she wants."
Kyle felt his throat tighten. He knew Andrew was right, but that didn’t make it easier to swallow. "I know that. I just... I don’t know, man."
Andrew was quiet for another moment before he spoke again, this time with more sincerity. "Look, I didn’t know you had feelings for her. If I’d known, I might have stepped back. But... I also can’t pretend I’m not interested in her too."
Kyle sat there, absorbing Andrew’s words. Still, the thought of losing her to Andrew stung more than he was willing to admit.
"Yeah," Kyle said finally, his voice quieter now.
Kyle gripped the phone tighter, waiting for Andrew’s response. The silence on the other end stretched out, thick with unspoken tension. When Andrew finally spoke, his voice was softer and more thoughtful than Kyle expected.
"Look, man, I didn’t realize you felt that way about Emily," Andrew said, sounding less confident now. "I mean, you never said anything, and I guess I just assumed… well, I didn’t think there was anything between you two."
Kyle exhaled, the tightness in his chest easing just a bit. "Yeah, I know I’ve been quiet about it. I didn’t want to mess up our friendship, and I wasn’t sure how she felt, but… it’s been on my mind for a while."
Andrew sighed on the other end, the smile that had been so apparent in his voice now gone. "I get it, man. I should’ve picked up on it. If I’d known, I wouldn’t have… well, I wouldn’t have gone for her like that."
Kyle’s surprise must have been evident in the silence because Andrew continued quickly. "I’m serious, Kyle. I’m not the kind of guy who gets in the way when my friend’s got feelings like that. I mean, yeah, Emily’s great, but if you’ve had something going for months… I’m not gonna mess with that."
Kyle blinked, caught off guard by the shift. "You sure? I mean, you seemed really into her, too."
Andrew let out a small chuckle. "Yeah, but I’m not going to bulldoze over a friend for a girl. Especially not you, man. We’ve been through a lot, and I’m not about to ruin that over this. You’ve been supportive, helping get this job. Being there for me during the divorce. I’ll back off."
Kyle couldn’t help the wave of relief that washed over him, though there was still a hint of guilt. "I didn’t mean to put you in a weird spot, Andrew. I just needed you to know."
"I’m glad you told me," Andrew said, sounding more relaxed now. "Honestly, I wouldn’t want things to get awkward between us. I can step back, no problem. Besides, if Emily feels the same about you, it’s not like I’d stand much of a chance anyway."
Kyle laughed lightly, the tension finally starting to dissolve. "Thanks, man. I appreciate it."
"No worries. I’ll cancel coffee with her tomorrow," Andrew added, though not bitterly. "You’ve got something good with her. Just... don’t wait too long to make your move, alright?"
Kyle smiled, a mix of relief and determination building in his chest. "I won’t. Thanks, Andrew."
As they said their goodbyes and Kyle hung up the phone, he felt a weight lift off his shoulders. Andrew backing down was something he hadn’t expected, but it gave him the clarity he needed. Now, there was nothing holding him back from telling Emily how he truly felt.
For the first time that night, Kyle felt like he had a real shot. All he had to do now was take it.
—
Emily woke up, ready to start her day. She showered and was putting waves in her hair when her phone went off. She stared at her phone, frowning at the unexpected message from Andrew. He had texted her, canceling their coffee out of the blue.
“Hey Emily, something came up, so I’m gonna have to cancel today. Sorry about that! Maybe we can catch up some other time."
She read it twice, trying to make sense of it. The easy flow of their conversation the night before didn’t suggest anything like this. He had seemed interested, eager even. So why was he canceling now?
Her thoughts swirled as she sat down on the edge of her bed, the excitement from last night's party dimming with every passing second. Maybe she had misread the situation.
She started to type a reply, then deleted it. She didn’t want to appear needy or pushy, but the sudden shift felt odd. Instead, she shot off a simple, nonchalant response:
“Oh, no worries. Hope everything’s okay."
As she set her phone down, a lingering unease plagued her. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something had changed, but she had no idea what.
Emily glared at her phone, Andrew’s text still on the screen. His sudden cancellation felt strange, especially after how well they’d gotten along the night before. She sat there for a moment, feeling a mix of disappointment and confusion. Something about the situation didn’t sit right,
She dialed Kyle’s number.
“Hey, Em,” Kyle’s voice was light, though there was a slight hesitation in it that she hadn’t noticed before.
“Hey,” she replied, not quite sure how to start. She ran a hand through her hair and decided to just jump in. “So, uh… Andrew just canceled on me. We were supposed to have coffee today, but he texted out of the blue and said something came up.”
Kyle paused, and the silence on the other end of the line stretched just a little too long. “Oh, uh… That’s, uh, weird.“
Emily narrowed her eyes at the phone, sensing the awkwardness in his tone. Kyle was usually so easy to read, but now he sounded... off.
“Kyle, did something happen?” she asked. “I don’t know, I just have this weird feeling. Everything seemed fine with Andrew last night.”
There was a shuffling sound on the other end. “Well, I mean, maybe he got busy? Or, uh, maybe he just thought—like—maybe it wasn’t a good idea or something? I don’t really know,” he rambled.
Emily’s suspicion grew. “Did you talk to Andrew? What did he say?”
Kyle let out a nervous laugh, and she could practically hear him scratching the back of his neck, something he always did when he was anxious. “Uh, well… yeah, we talked for a bit last night, but it wasn’t anything major. You know, regular stuff.”
“Regular stuff?” Emily repeated, not buying it for a second.
“Yeah, like, you know… I just mentioned, like, how we’ve been friends for a while and how you’re... great and all.” His voice trailed off, and Emily could tell he was struggling to find the right words.
“Kyle,” she said, her tone more serious now, “what exactly did you say to him?”
There was a long sigh on the other end. “Look, we were talking, and I might have mentioned that we’ve known each other for a while. That’s all.”
Emily’s heart sank. "So, you told him we were close, and he probably thought… what?"
“I don’t know."
She pinched the bridge of her nose, feeling a headache forming. “Kyle, he’s canceled, and I’m left wondering what the hell happened.”
“I didn’t think it would be a big deal,” Kyle mumbled, sounding genuinely remorseful but still awkward. “I wasn’t trying to screw things up. I just... I don’t know. I guess I was trying to figure out what was going on.”
Emily sighed deeply. "Kyle, I appreciate that you care, but I wish you would’ve just talked to me. Now I don’t even know if Andrew canceled because of something you said or if it was just... something else."
“I’m sorry, Em,” Kyle said, his voice soft and apologetic.
Emily didn’t know what else to say. She felt stuck between frustration and confusion, unsure how to untangle the situation. Okay. I’ll talk to you later.”
“Yeah, okay,” Kyle said quietly.
As she hung up, Emily stared at the phone in her hand, still processing the conversation. Everything felt more complicated than it had a few hours ago, and she wasn’t sure how to make sense of it.
Emily set her phone down, staring at the screen as her frustration bubbled beneath the surface. Andrew’s sudden cancellation was confusing enough, but now Kyle’s awkwardness was making it worse. Her mind raced, trying to piece together what had happened between last night’s easy connection with Andrew and this morning’s odd shift.
She ran her fingers through her hair, pacing the room. Something wasn’t adding up, and Kyle’s hesitation during their conversation only fueled her suspicions. She had known Kyle for years, and he was usually straightforward with her.
What had he really said to Andrew? She replayed the conversation in her mind, her irritation growing with each second. It wasn’t like Kyle to meddle in her relationships.
Emily sighed, dropping onto the couch. The more she thought about it, the more unsettled she felt. She wasn’t just frustrated with Kyle for interfering; she was also disappointed. She had been excited about Andrew, about the possibility of getting to know him better, and now it felt like that chance had been taken away before it even started.
Her phone buzzed with a new notification, pulling her attention back to the screen. For a moment, she hoped it was Andrew, maybe explaining the sudden cancellation. But when she saw it was just a reminder from her calendar, she let out a frustrated breath.
As she sat there, her thoughts racing, one thing became clear: she needed to talk to Andrew directly. If Kyle had unintentionally complicated things, she wasn’t going to let it end like this.
She picked up her phone again, hesitating before texting Andrew.
“Hey, I just wanted to check-in. I hope everything’s alright. I felt like we had a good time last night, so I was surprised when you canceled. If it’s something else, just let me know. I’m still up for coffee if you are."
Emily stared at the message for a moment before hitting send. She didn’t know how Andrew would respond, but at least now the ball was in his court. And this time, she’d make sure the decision was between her and him—not anyone else.
Veronica, Emily’s roommate, shuffled down the hallway, still half-asleep, rubbing her eyes as she entered the kitchen. She frowned slightly as she started the coffee maker, glancing over at Emily, who was already dressed and looking unusually alert.
“You’re up early,” she remarked, giving Emily a once-over.
Emily sighed, leaning against the counter. “I was supposed to have a coffee date.”
Veronica raised an eyebrow. “And now you’re not?”
“He canceled,” Emily replied, her tone flat.
Veronica grimaced sympathetically as she opened the fridge and began pulling out ingredients. “Ugh, that sucks. Want an omelette?”
“Sure,” Emily shrugged, feeling deflated.
“What happened?” Veronica asked, setting the eggs on the counter.
Emily sighed, leaning against the counter as Veronica cracked eggs into a bowl. "I don’t really know. Everything seemed fine last night. Andrew and I were hitting it off, and then out of nowhere, he texted me this morning, canceling."
Veronica glanced up, whisking the eggs. "No explanation? Just a cancellation?"
Emily shook her head. "Nothing specific. He just said something came up, and maybe we could catch up another time."
Veronica raised an eyebrow, "Things come up. It’s not unusual.”
Emily hesitated, her fingers drumming lightly against the counter. "I’m not sure. I called Kyle after I got Andrew’s text, and he was acting super strange. I asked him if he had talked to Andrew, and he admitted they had had a conversation. But he kept dodging what exactly they talked about."
Veronica stopped stirring and gave Emily a pointed look. "So Kyle might’ve said something to Andrew?"
"Yeah… I don’t know what."
Veronica rolled her eyes and laughed sarcastically as she poured the whisked eggs into the pan. “Yeah, okay,” she said, shaking her head. “If you don’t know what Kyle said, you’re delusional, Em. The guy’s been into you for months.”
Emily blinked, caught off guard. "What are you talking about?"
Veronica shot her a knowing look, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, come on. It’s obvious. Kyle’s always hanging around, always finding reasons to be close to you. And now, conveniently, Andrew cancels after talking to him? That’s not a coincidence."
Emily crossed her arms, shaking her head. “No, that’s not it. Kyle and I are just friends.”
Veronica gave her an incredulous look as she flipped the omelette in the pan. “Seriously, Em? You really don’t see it?”
Emily frowned, refusing to believe it. “Kyle’s not like that. He’s just… protective. Maybe he was trying to look out for me or something. It doesn’t mean he’s into me.”
Veronica rolled her eyes again, this time with a sigh. “You’re either in denial or just completely oblivious. But fine, whatever helps you sleep at night.” She slid the omelette onto a plate and handed it to Emily. “Just don’t be surprised when Kyle finally makes a move.”
Emily took the plate from Veronica, still frowning as she tried to make sense of it. “Kyle’s been my friend for years. If he had feelings for me, wouldn’t he have said something by now? We always hang out, and it’s never been weird or anything. I think you’re reading too much into this.”
Veronica watched Emily struggle to defend her point. “Or maybe he’s been waiting for the right moment, and when he saw Andrew getting close, he panicked. It happens, Em. Guys don’t always spell it out.”
Emily shook her head, picking at her omelette but not eating it. “No, Kyle wouldn’t do that. He knows I’d want him to be straight with me if something was going on. Besides, I would’ve noticed if he felt that way.”
Veronica raised an eyebrow, not buying it. “You sure about that? Maybe you don’t want to see it because it would complicate things. It’s easier to think he’s just being a good friend.”
Emily stared at her food, the words sinking in uncomfortably. “I don’t know. It just doesn’t make sense. If he liked me, why wouldn’t he say something instead of messing with things behind the scenes? That’s not Kyle.”
Veronica sighed, her tone softening as she flipped the omelette in the pan. “Maybe he didn’t mean to mess things up, Em. Maybe he just freaked out a little. It happens when feelings get involved.”
Emily crossed her arms, a mix of frustration and disbelief on her face. “I’m not even into Kyle like that, though. He’s just… Kyle.”
Veronica shot her a knowing look, the hint of a smirk tugging at her lips. “Sure, you’re not,” she teased, stirring the eggs with exaggerated nonchalance.
“I’m serious!” Emily said, her voice raising slightly. “He’s not my type.”
Veronica dramatically rolled her eyes as if that was the most predictable thing Emily could’ve said. She knew all too well what Emily’s "type" was: tattooed bad boys, emotionally unavailable, with a flair for chaos. The kind of guys who blew into her life like a storm and left just as quickly. “Maybe your type is the issue, babe. Maybe it’s time to try something new.”
Emily scowled, clearly annoyed. “I don’t need to ‘try something new,’” she said, making air quotes. “Kyle’s my friend. That’s all I see him as. Nothing more.”
Veronica set the spatula down and leaned against the counter, eyeing Emily thoughtfully. “Okay, but as your friend, I’ve gotta say—Kyle’s a catch. He’s funny and smart and always there when you need him. I don’t know how you don’t see it.”
“I do see it,” Emily said, still defensive. “I see him as a friend. Just like you do.”
Veronica gave her a sly grin. “Uh, no. I see him as the kind of guy every girl should want. He’s dependable, listens, and does not run around with a different girl every weekend. Come on, Em, he’s been practically glued to your side for months. That’s not just friendship. That’s called a slow burn.”
Emily furrowed her brows. “A slow burn?”
“Yeah,” Veronica said, leaning in, her voice laced with playful intensity. “You know, the kind where he doesn’t make a big dramatic move but slowly worms his way into your life. Before you know it, you’re thinking about him all the time, wondering why you miss him when he’s not around. Then, one day, boom—you realize you’ve got feelings.”
Emily rolled her eyes but couldn’t help smiling a little. “That’s not how it is with Kyle.”
Veronica chuckled, picking up the spatula again and flipping the omelette with ease. “Keep telling yourself that, Em. But remember, slow burns sneak up on you. One day, you’re friends, and the next, you can’t picture your life without them.” She turned to look at Emily, her eyes twinkling with amusement. “And by then, you’re hooked.”
Emily groaned, shaking her head. “You’re reading too many romance books.”
Veronica winked. “Maybe, but I’ve also watched you two. Just saying.”
“So, what’s so special about Andrew, anyway?”
Emily paused, taking a bite of the omelette, using the moment to gather her thoughts. She wasn’t sure how to explain it without sounding ridiculous. “I don’t know… he’s different. We just clicked. He’s got this confidence, but it’s not over the top. And he actually listens when I talk, you know? Like, he’s genuinely interested in what I have to say.”
“Sounds like someone else I know.”
Emily rolled her eyes. “Don’t start. Andrew’s not like Kyle. It’s… different.”
“Different, how?” Veronica pressed.
Emily thought about it, chewing slowly. “It’s not just what he says, it’s how he makes me feel. He’s easy to be around, but it’s exciting at the same time. He’s got this… I don’t know, energy. It’s hard to explain.”
Veronica nodded thoughtfully. “So, you’re saying he makes you feel seen. Got it. But does that make him better than Kyle?”
Emily groaned. “Why are we even comparing them? Kyle’s just a friend, V. Andrew’s… something else.”
“Something else, huh?” Veronica said with a teasing smile. “I don’t know, Em. From where I’m standing, it sounds like you’re describing two guys who both make you feel good. But one’s already in your life, always there when you need him, and the other’s… well, a guy who just canceled your coffee date.”
Emily looked down at her plate, her fork idly pushing around the food as Veronica’s words sunk in.
Emily set her fork down, feeling the weight of Veronica's words. “It’s not that simple. Andrew’s new, exciting. There’s something about him I want to explore. Kyle’s… Kyle. I don’t think about him like that.”
Veronica tilted her head, a knowing smile tugging at her lips. “You don’t think about him like that now. But you just said Andrew makes you feel seen. How is that any different from what Kyle’s been doing for, what, years?”
“Because it is different,” Emily insisted, though her voice wasn’t as confident as she wanted it to be. “Andrew and I have this… spark. It’s something you just know when it’s there.”
Veronica raised an eyebrow. “And Kyle? No spark?”
Emily sighed, “Not in the same way. Kyle’s always been there, yeah, but that doesn’t mean we’re supposed to be anything more. I don’t see him that way.”
“Maybe you haven’t let yourself see him that way,” Veronica countered, her tone softening. “Sometimes the people we need the most aren’t the ones who hit us like a lightning bolt.”
Emily stared at her, feeling a strange mixture of frustration and doubt. “I don’t want to lose what I have with Kyle by overthinking this. It’s not like there’s anything between us.”
Veronica shrugged, turning back to finish cooking her own omelette. “I’m just saying, maybe there’s more there than you’re letting yourself see. You can chase sparks, but sometimes, the slow burn’s what lasts.”
Emily stayed quiet, her thoughts swirling. She hadn’t considered that her closeness with Kyle could be anything more than friendship. But now, with Andrew backing out, Kyle’s awkwardness, and Veronica’s words hanging in the air, she couldn’t help but feel like something was shifting.
Veronica slid her omelette onto a plate and sat across from Emily, watching her carefully. “Look, I’m not saying you have to feel one way or another. But don’t write off Kyle just because he doesn’t give you butterflies like Andrew. Sometimes, the people who know you best are the ones who can surprise you the most.”
As Emily sat there, the words “slow burn” echoed in her mind, unsettling her in a way she hadn’t expected.
Emily felt a surge of anger rise inside her, the realization hitting her like a wave. “Why wouldn’t Kyle say anything to me? Why would he go behind my back and talk to Andrew?” Her voice came out sharper than she intended, frustration clear in every word.
Veronica paused, her fork halfway to her mouth, before slowly setting it down. “I get it, Em. I’d be pissed too. But honestly? Maybe he didn’t know how to. You two have been friends for so long. Maybe he was afraid to risk it. Talking to Andrew was probably his panic mode.”
Emily stood up, pacing the small kitchen as her mind raced. “It’s not fair. If Kyle has feelings for me, why the hell wouldn’t he tell me instead of messing with something that could’ve been good with Andrew? What did he think he was protecting me from?”
“He probably thought he was protecting himself too, Em. Maybe he didn’t want to hear you say that you weren’t interested, or worse, that you were into Andrew. I’m not saying what he did was right, but... I think Kyle’s stuck in his own head.”
Emily stopped pacing and turned toward Veronica, her hands on her hips. “But that’s not an excuse. I get that it’s hard to confess something like that, but if he cared, he should’ve come to me, not sabotaged things behind my back. Now Andrew’s canceled on me, and everything’s messed up.”
Veronica nodded. “You’re right. He should’ve come to you first. He was wrong to go behind your back like that.”
Emily felt her fists clenching and unclenching as her thoughts swirled. The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. Kyle, of all people, had always been the one she trusted the most. Now, it felt like he’d been playing some game she wasn’t aware of, and she hated that feeling.
“Why wouldn’t he just let me make my own decisions?” Emily muttered, more to herself than to Veronica.
“Rejection is hard. Maybe he wasn’t ready for yours. Since you’re just friends… and there’s no possibility for more, right?”
Emily froze, her back to Veronica. The question lingered in the air. “Right,” she said, but even she could hear the hesitation in her voice. It wasn’t that she hadn’t thought about it before—Kyle was, after all, one of the best people she knew. But that had always been the problem. He was safe, dependable. Not like Andrew, who brought excitement and newness.
Veronica raised an eyebrow, her tone light but pointed. “You sure about that?”
Emily turned to face her, frustration still simmering but now mingling with confusion. “Yes! I mean… I don’t know. He’s never said anything, and neither have I. We’ve always just been friends. He doesn’t get to act like there’s more and screw things up for me.”
Veronica shrugged, but her expression softened. “Maybe you need to have that conversation with him, Em. For real. Because it sounds like he’s been building something in his head, whether you knew it or not. And now it’s spilling over into your life.”
“Andrew was just so bold and assertive,” Emily said, a small smile breaking through her frustration as she thought back to the night before. Her voice softened, and the anger toward Kyle took a backseat for a moment. “He didn’t hesitate. He knew what he wanted and just… went for it.”
Veronica laughed, watching Emily’s face light up. “And you liked that, huh?”
Emily nodded, still smiling. “Yeah, I guess I did. It was exciting. It felt different—like he wasn’t holding anything back. It wasn’t this guessing game.”
Veronica raised an eyebrow. “So, you liked how straightforward Andrew was, but Kyle’s... what? Too careful? Too familiar?”
Emily paused, biting her lip. “I don’t know. Maybe. Andrew made me feel like there was no question about how he saw me. It was all out in the open, no hesitation. With Kyle, it’s like everything’s hidden under the surface.”
She couldn’t deny that the spark with Andrew was exciting, but she couldn’t ignore the complications Kyle’s actions had created either.
Veronica, her tone more serious now. “But Em, you have to ask yourself—is that boldness you like so much about Andrew really what you need? Or is it just what feels exciting right now? Because Kyle, for all his awkwardness, has been there.”
