Chapter 1 The hidden passage

Nina slumped against the cold, chipped wall of her bedroom, the dim light from a single bulb casting long shadows across the room. The walls, once white, were now streaked with grime and desperation, just like her life. At thirteen, Nina had already learned to navigate the chaotic world her parents had crafted for themselves—one clouded by the haze of drug addiction. Her room was her refuge, a small, cluttered space where she could retreat from the noise and discord that defined her home.

Her parents rarely emerged from their room, locked away in their own private prison. The muffled sounds of their arguments and the occasional thud against the walls were her constant companions. Nina had long stopped trying to understand their struggles or to reach out for help. Her heart ached with loneliness, an isolation amplified by the absence of friends or anyone who might understand her.

Tonight, the weight of her solitude felt heavier than usual. The oppressive silence of the house was broken only by the occasional creak of the floorboards as she shifted restlessly. She glanced around her room, her eyes landing on the small, battered bookshelf in the corner. It was filled with old, worn-out books, relics from a time when she had once hoped for escape through stories. But as the years passed, even these tales of distant lands had failed to offer her solace.

Bored and restless, Nina wandered over to her closet. She fumbled through the mess of clothes and old toys, pushing aside forgotten items until her fingers brushed against something unexpected. A hidden compartment in the wall behind her clothes. She felt a shiver of curiosity as she pulled at the loose panel, revealing a narrow, dusty alcove. Inside lay a small, ornate box, its surface covered in intricate patterns that seemed to shimmer faintly in the dim light.

Heart pounding with a mixture of fear and excitement, Nina opened the box. Inside, nestled among faded velvet lining, was an ancient-looking key. Its design was peculiar, with symbols she didn’t recognize etched into the metal. She held it up, turning it in her hand, trying to make sense of it. The key seemed to pulse with a strange energy, as if it held a secret she was on the verge of uncovering.

With a sense of trepidation, Nina noticed a strange, faint glow emanating from a corner of her room, a soft, ethereal light that had not been there before. Following the light, she discovered an old, dust-covered mirror leaning against the wall. The mirror’s surface shimmered, not with reflections, but with a shifting, otherworldly light.

Compelled by an irresistible urge, Nina approached the mirror and held the key up to it. The moment the key touched the surface of the mirror, a powerful, swirling vortex of colors erupted. Nina stumbled back, eyes wide in awe and fear, as the vortex expanded, creating a shimmering portal in the space where the mirror had once been.

Trembling, Nina stepped closer, peering into the swirling depths. The colors seemed to beckon her, promising something beyond her wildest dreams. The loneliness and despair of her current life faded in the face of the portal’s promise. With a deep breath, she made a decision that would change her life forever.

Nina took a tentative step forward, and then another, until she was fully enveloped by the light of the portal. As she crossed the threshold, the oppressive weight of her old world fell away, and she was enveloped in a sensation of weightlessness.

When she finally emerged on the other side, Nina found herself in a world unlike anything she had ever imagined. Lush landscapes stretched before her, filled with vibrant colors and strange, wondrous sights. It was a world brimming with possibilities, far removed from the shadows of her past life.

For the first time in a long while, Nina felt a spark of hope. As she took in her surroundings, a sense of freedom and adventure coursed through her. Little did she know, this new world held its own challenges and mysteries, but for now, it was a beacon of light in the darkness of her existence.
