Chapter 1: New Beginnings
In the midst of winters, the creaky gates of the orphanage swung open, their rusty hinges groaning in protest.Sarah, a shy and shivering 12-year-old, with her suitcase, her eyes scanning the unfamiliar surroundings with a mix of fear and curiosity. The lawn seemed overgrown, and the paint on the orphanage's facade was chipped and faded. Next to her, Alex, a 13-year-old boy with a messy mop of hair and a curious gaze, looked just as lost, his eyes darting between the building and the gate as if searching for an escape route.
As they stepped inside, the warm smile of Mrs. Jenkins, the matron, enveloped them like a gentle hug. "Welcome, children. You'll be staying with us now."
As she spoke, Sarah's gaze drifted to the floor, her eyes welling up with tears. Alex noticed her distress and hesitated, his hand twitching as if he wanted to reach out.
Just then, Mrs. Jenkins led them to the common room, where a few children were playing quietly. As they entered, a ball bounced away from the group, rolling toward Sarah. Alex quickly moved to intercept it, but in the process, he accidentally knocked over Sarah's suitcase, spilling its contents onto the floor.
"Oh no, I'm so sorry!" Alex exclaimed, rushing to help Sarah gather her belongings. As they both bent down, their hands touched, and Alex offered a gentle smile. Sarah, still tearful, managed a small smile back, and Alex continued to help her gather her things.
Just as they finished, a girl with piercing green eyes and long, curly brown hair walked into the room. Her gaze locked onto Alex, and she approached him with a quiet confidence. "Hi," she said simply, her voice barely above a whisper.
Alex looked up, startled, and smiled back. "Hi," he replied, his eyes holding hers for a brief moment before she turned and walked away, disappearing into the hallway.
Sarah watched the exchange, feeling a pang of curiosity about the mysterious girl. But Alex quickly turned his attention back to her, and they continued to talk as they walked to their rooms.
As they settled into their new routine, Sarah and Alex grew closer, bonding over their shared experiences and supporting each other through the challenges of their new life at the orphanage. Their friendship blossomed slowly, built on small moments of kindness, empathy, and understanding.
