Chapter 1 - The Beginning

Beth

Tuesday morning arrived, and I found myself back at work after a much-needed long weekend off. James and I had finally escaped for a romantic weekend, a getaway I had meticulously planned months in advance. The romantic setting of walks by the shore and dinners by the lake gave me hope that James would propose this weekend. I came back slightly disappointed as he made no proposal.

The smell of freshly brewed coffee greeted me as I entered the break room. In the office, Laura and I engaged in a lengthy discussion. I poured out my heart, sharing the difficulties of my weekend adventures and expressing my disappointment that he had yet to pop the question.

“Maybe he is just waiting for the right moment?” She gives me a pained look of sorrow.

“Well, when will that be? I thought by now he would have proposed. We’ve been together for six years.” Maybe I’m being silly?

“Look, it’s coming up to Valentine’s day soon and you know there is the big party he was organizing. Maybe he plans on doing it then?” Laura shrugged her shoulders.

“Yes, you’re right, thanks babe. You are always there for me when I need you.” I hugged her.

My words made Laura blush. We had been close friends for a long time, and she had always been there for me. After exchanging another embrace, we headed to our individual offices to begin our work for the day. I received a phone call, asking me to come through to Thomas’s office. With my notepad in hand, I went upstairs to his office. With a gentle tap on his door, he welcomed me inside with a loud invitation.

“Take a seat, would you, Beth?” He gestured to the seat in front of his desk.

The rare occasion of being summoned to the boss’s office filled me with apprehension, causing my stomach to churn. As I sat there, anxiously twiddling my fingers, the room fell into a tense silence, waiting for him to break it.

“Okay Beth, I’ve called you in here this morning as I’m looking to promote someone to a senior accountant.”

“Oh, thank god.” I let out a loud breath of air in relief.

Thomas let out a chuckle. “Now I could never get rid of you, Beth. You are amongst one of my best workers here and you also date my son. I’ll give it to you straight. I want to give you the position, but I also have to go down the proper channels and give everyone else a chance. We have you, Laura, and Heather up for the position. I want to have a private meeting with each of you to discuss the job requirements and determine who would be the best fit. So I’m about to call up Laura and Heather separately and hold an interview with them.”

Thomas kept talking and ran through the position to me. Thomas wants to create a new position in the company to handle future problems, so that one person can address them instead of everyone going to him or James. Then, he or James would only handle the serious problems which couldn’t be sorted. It was a tremendous step that I wanted. I had worked hard within the company for the last five years.

When Laura joined three years ago, we hit it off straight away, and we became best friends. I left the office, excited at the possibility of being the senior accountant for the company. James came sauntering in as he usually did. Thomas summoned Laura up to his office for an on-the-spot interview.

“Hi babe.” James placed the three coffees down on my table and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

“Don’t you ever do work?” I had left him sleeping when I got ready for work. It was one thing that pissed me off about him.

“Of course I do, babe, just had to bring you a coffee before I started.”

James was lazy when it came to work, especially in his dad’s company, as he thought it was boring. He knew his stuff and was good at what he did, but James liked excitement in his life. I always wondered if that was why we were always going off doing crazy shit at the weekends. That was until James found a love in mountain biking, but I found it too much and wanted to chill sometimes, so James went off mountain biking on his own.

“Thanks honey.”

“Well, I better get to work, I suppose.” He rolls his eyes.

He picks up the two other coffees and takes one to Laura’s office to drop off. I thought it was sweet that he brought one for her as well, because we were all friends. He dropped it off for her as she wasn’t in her office and headed off upstairs to his. After an hour, Laura came back down. Her coffee was cold, but she didn’t really care and still drank it. After a long morning, we all got to break for lunch and headed out together, ending up at one of our favorite places. We are just finishing up when Laura heads to the toilets.

“I might quickly go to the toilet before we leave as well, babe.” James gets up and heads to the gents.

I pull out my phone and chew on my bottom lip. Recently, I downloaded a game on my phone. I thought it was silly to start with, but I got into it and had already fallen for one of the fictional characters. In this amusing dating game, angels and demons competed playfully for love and affection. You had the power to select your date and determine the level of intimacy, and soon they flooded your phone with their messages.

James

All this pretending is starting to put a strain on me. I love Beth, but since Laura started working for my dad, she is filthy in bed and I can’t get enough of her. I peer back around the corner to check on Beth, who is looking at her phone. Laura comes out of the ladies and spots me.

“What are you up to?”

“Just checking she wasn’t going to follow.” I ran my eyes up and down Laura’s body. She was fucking hot.

“Oh, and why was that?” She smiled.

“Are you fucking teasing me today or what?” I ran my hand up the inside of her thigh to her panties.

“Mmm, well, I’m wearing the sexy undies you got me from last week.” She gasped as I brushed over her center.

“I can’t wait to have you again.” I took another quick glance to see Beth still on her phone before kissing Laura.

“I better go back. You take an extra minute, so there are no suspicions.”

“I’ll see you later.” I slipped my finger under her panties and pushed it into her wet core, giving her a quick finger fuck before she left.

We had been seeing each other behind Beth’s back for the last two years. The mountain biking I went off on was really me going to see Laura. We had been sneaking off at the workplace when we also had a chance. Beth was so engrossed in her work she never noticed when Laura would disappear from her office for half an hour here and there. Laura slid into her seat and smiled at her best friend. This is going to be hell if she ever finds out. I take my time and wash my hands before heading back to the table. Before I reached them, I heard Laura asking Beth something that made me stop.

“What are you looking at on your phone?”

“Oh, it’s just a silly game I started playing.” Beth cracked a grin. She showed Laura what was on it and ran over a few of the characters.

“Oh, Mr. Demon number three looks nice.” Laura laughed.

“Like I say, it’s just a silly game.” Beth blushed as I came back to the table.

She put her phone away in her bag as she stood up and we all wandered back to the office. I gave Beth a peck on the cheek before heading back to my office. I had told Beth I didn’t want to give her too much attention when at work, so it didn’t make anyone else think Beth was getting preference for things because we dated. Beth understood, and we kept it as professional as possible.

Beth

I don’t know what it was, but showing Laura the game made me feel awkward. She is meant to be my best friend, but there was something inside of me saying I didn’t want her to see it. Was it me being guilty for looking at sexy men when I had James? Would she tell James that I was gawking at these hot guys?

“Don’t be silly Beth, everyone can fantasize about a sexy hunk. It doesn’t mean that I’m going to go out there and cheat.” A ping went on my phone and I checked it. It was my fictional character requesting to take me out on a date. I had to smile as I looked over his profile. His short dark hair and stubble of a beard across his face stood out against his piercing blue eyes.

“Do I want to go out on a date with Rhydon, god of the sky? He is definitely cute. Why not? It’s only a silly game and I’m happy with James. It doesn’t mean anything.” Pressing the yes button, I accepted the request and my heart did a brief flutter. What the hell was that all about?
