Chapter 1: Hospital Part 1

After Dean and Kayla left the apartment, Dean wasted no time. He drove straight to the hospital, the urgency in his every move driven by his fear for Kayla’s health. His heart was heavy with guilt—he couldn’t believe

how bad things had gotten for his little girl without him knowing.

Kayla, still weak and shaken, leaned against the car seat, her small frame a reminder of the neglect and pain she had endured for years. She was silent, but her eyes told a story of suffering and resilience. Dean clenched the steering wheel tighter, determined to make things right.

Once they arrived at the hospital, Dean rushed Kayla through the doors and demanded immediate help. The doctors took one look at Kayla, saw her frail condition, and quickly whisked her away for testing. The hospital staff could see the signs of abuse and neglect, and they wasted no time in

giving Kayla the attention she so desperately needed. The tests seemed to go on for hours. Blood work, x-rays, and evaluations were all performed. Dean sat in the waiting room with his mother Lilly, his hands clasped together and his head in between his legs, his mind racing with worry.

What had Dereck done to her? How much damage was done to her? Every passing minute felt like a lifetime.

Finally, the doctor came out, a serious expression on her face. “Mr. Smith, yes he said.Your daughter is severely malnourished and dehydrated. She only weighs twenty-five pounds at a seven year olds weight and that is not a good thing she said. She has bruises and signs of long-term emotional and physical abuse, and I regret to tell you that there are signs of long-term sexual abuse aswell. I am going to kill him. Sir, that is not going to help your daughter right now when she needs you. I know this is a lot to take in right now but there is more we have to talk about. What else did he do to her? We are going to have to perform a surgery on her ear. What do you mean why does she need that? Dean said. There are multiple beads in her ear conical. We are going to have to get them removed. She has bite marks all over her body. What did a dog bite her? Dean said I didn’t see a dog there. No sir, they are human bite marks. Are you kidding me? Dean said with anger and frustration in his tone of voice. Is there any good news about my daughter he asked. Yes sir she said the good news is that with proper care and treatment, she can recover. We’ll need to keep her here for a while to monitor her condition and give her the nutrients she

needs.” She is going to need psychiatric help as well. I am going to recommend that once you get back home she is going to need a therapist to help her with all that has happened to her. He said okay.

Dean let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. Relief washed over him, but at the same time mad at why this went on for this long with no help from CPS or law enforcement until now and that his daughter was rape not just once but multiple times over the years. Or that she was raped at all to begin with all because no one was willing to help him get her when when Cara take her and left for years.

Cara told him if he did not come when he did she would have not made it another day. But the knowledge of what Kayla had endured haunted him.How could Cara let this happen to their daughter she was never like this before with her.But knowing Kayla could recover gave him hope.

Over the next few days, Kayla remained in the hospital under close observation. The doctors gave her IV fluids to rehydrate her and provided her with a steady diet to slowly

bring her back to health. The cops would come by and check on her as well making sure that Kayla and her dad and grandmother had stuff they needed for Kayla. One of the cops that was there that the day of Dean came for her came by there more often then the others.Kayla seemed to like him more and trusted him. He would bring her stuff like clothing, stuffed animals and even strawberry milkshakes because that was all she could eat at that time. They also began counseling to help Kayla process the trauma she had lived through. The Doctor come out to read all the test results with Dean.Their was one that really worried them the most was that Kayla had lead poisoning for eating lead paint from the walls in the room.

Dean stayed by her side the entire time. He read her books, played soft music, and talked to her about all the things they would do together when she was better. Kayla, though still weak, began to open up, clinging

to her father’s comforting presence.

For the first time in a long time, Kayla started to smile again, even if just a little. Dean held onto that smile as a sign that she would be okay, that together, they could heal from the darkness of the past.

One evening, as Kayla drifted off to sleep in her hospital bed, Dean sat by her side, watching her with a renewed sense of purpose. He made a silent promise to her— to never let her suffer like that again. He would protect her from anyone who tried to harm her, and he would make sure she had

the childhood she deserved. The doctors continued to check in, giving

updates on Kayla’s progress. “She’s getting stronger every day,” one of the nurses told Dean. “It’ll take time, but she’s a fighter.” Dean smiled softly. “She gets that from her mother,” he said, his mind briefly thinking of

Cara, and the difficult choices she had made in the past.

As the days passed, Kayla began to improve. Her appetite returned, her energy slowly built up, and the dark circles under her eyes started to fade. The doctors were optimistic, and Dean was filled with gratitude. There was still a long road ahead—both for Kayla’s physical recovery and for the

emotional scars left behind. But for now, they had hope. Kayla was safe, and Dean was determined to give her a life filled with love and happiness.

For the first time in years, it felt like things could truly get better.
