Chapter 1 The Beginning of a Dangerous Attraction
The tall, sleek glass building loomed over the bustling city, its mirrored walls catching the sunlight and reflecting the powerful empire that was held within it—Montgomery Enterprises. Inside, the sharp clicks of heels and murmurs of business echoed through the halls, a rhythm Allena had grown used to ever since she started working there.
It had been a year since Allena had taken the job as an executive assistant at the company. She was good at her job—efficient, organized, and well-liked by her colleagues. But none of that stopped the butterflies from swirling in her stomach every time she stepped into the office. It wasn’t the work that had her nerves on edge—it was him.
Riaan Montgomery.
The billionaire CEO who ruled his empire with an iron fist and a smoldering intensity that made every woman in the building secretly swoon. His presence commanded respect, his piercing dark eyes missed nothing, and his confidence was intoxicating. Tall, with broad shoulders that filled out his tailored suits to perfection, his jet-black hair always perfectly styled, Riaan was the epitome of power and sophistication.
And yet, despite his cold, professional demeanor, there had been moments—small, fleeting moments—where Allena had caught his gaze lingering on her a little too long. Moments when the air between them seemed to crackle with electricity, like the two of them were the only ones in the room.
But those were just fantasies, right? A man like Riaan could have any woman he wanted—stunning models, glamorous socialites, anyone but an ordinary assistant like her. Or so she kept telling herself.
Today, though, was different.
Allena had spent the morning going through her usual tasks, but her mind kept wandering. The annual board meeting was coming up, and the office was abuzz with preparations. But that wasn’t what was making her nervous—it was the fact that Riaan had asked her to come to his office at the end of the day.
Why? she kept asking herself. It wasn’t the first time she’d been called to his office, but something about the way he had looked at her when he made the request felt… different. Intense.
As the day drew to a close, Allena gathered her things and smoothed down her black pencil skirt, her heart racing as she made her way to the top floor. She pressed the button for the executive suite, her palms slightly damp with nervousness as the elevator ascended. When the doors opened, she was greeted by the sleek, modern design of Riaan’s personal floor—polished floors, abstract art on the walls, and an air of quiet sophistication.
“Allena,” Riaan’s assistant, Sofia, greeted her with a polite nod. “Mr. Montgomery is expecting you.”
Allena nodded, forcing a smile as she walked past Sofia’s desk and approached the door to his office. She took a deep breath and knocked.
“Come in,” came the deep, commanding voice from the other side.
Her heart skipped a beat as she pushed open the door. The office was grand, just like the man himself—floor-to-ceiling windows offering a panoramic view of the city, dark mahogany furniture, and shelves lined with books and awards. But her eyes were immediately drawn to Riaan, who stood behind his desk, his gaze locked on her.
“Good evening, Allena,” he said, his voice smooth and rich like velvet.
“Good evening, Mr. Montgomery,” she replied, trying to keep her voice steady.
“Please, call me Riaan,” he said, stepping closer. “I wanted to discuss the upcoming board meeting with you.”
As he spoke, Allena found it difficult to focus on the words coming out of his mouth. Instead, she was captivated by the way his dark eyes seemed to hold her in place, the slight smirk playing on his lips. He was so close that she could smell his cologne—warm, masculine, and intoxicating.
“Right,” she managed to say, pulling her thoughts back to the task at hand. “I’ve prepared the reports and the presentation slides. They’re all ready for review.”
“Excellent,” Riaan said, leaning against the edge of his desk, his posture relaxed yet commanding. “But I wanted to talk about something else as well.”
Allena’s heart raced. What could it be?
“I’ve noticed how hard you’ve been working lately,” he continued, his gaze never leaving hers. “Your dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed, and I appreciate it. I wanted to offer you a promotion.”
Allena blinked in surprise, her mind racing. “A promotion? Me?”
“Yes. I think you’d make an excellent project manager. You have the skills, and I believe you’d thrive in that role.”
“Wow, Riaan, I don’t know what to say,” she stammered, her heart swelling with pride. “Thank you!”
“Don’t thank me yet. There are conditions to this promotion.” His tone shifted slightly, and Allena’s heart dropped. “I need you to sign a contract outlining your responsibilities. It’s standard procedure.”
“Of course,” she said, trying to maintain her composure. “I understand.”
“But there’s one more thing,” he added, stepping closer, lowering his voice. “I want you to know that if you accept this promotion, it comes with certain expectations. You’ll be representing me in meetings and events, and I expect you to… maintain a certain image.”
Allena felt a heat rising to her cheeks. “I can do that.”
“Good. I knew you would.” Riaan held her gaze for a moment longer, and she could feel the tension crackling between them. It was almost overwhelming. “I’d like to celebrate your promotion tonight. Join me for dinner?”
Her heart raced. “Dinner? Just the two of us?”
“Yes. Just the two of us,” he confirmed, his expression serious yet inviting.
Allena hesitated, a mix of excitement and anxiety swirling within her. This could change everything. “Okay, I’d love to.”
“Great,” he said, a satisfied smile breaking through his otherwise stoic demeanor. “I’ll arrange for a car to pick you up at seven.”
As she turned to leave, she felt his eyes on her, a weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. She couldn’t help but glance back, catching him watching her with an intensity that made her heart race.
“Don’t be late, Allena,” he called after her, his voice low and commanding.
“I won’t,” she promised, feeling a rush of anticipation as she stepped out of the office.
