ONE
Ruben Erikson sat on a rock in front of the gold waterfall that resided on the Golden Island, staring up at the beautiful scenery with a mix of confusion and fascination.
He was mesmerized by what was in front of him but also confused about how he got there. He couldn’t remember why or how he was in this strange yet beautiful place. His memories were a confusing, hazy blur he couldn’t decipher. He knew he had come with others to this place and was here to find something but couldn’t remember what it was.
“Ruben.”
He spun around at the soft, warm voice behind him. She had long, curly brown hair that trailed past her shoulders, wore a long white gown, and had a beautiful heart-shaped face, and eyes that were identical to his.
A sense of familiarity came over him, as though he should know who this woman was.
He slowly rose to his feet, never taking his eyes off of her. “Who are you?”
She smiled warmly and lovingly cupped his face with her hand. “It’s wonderful to meet you, my son.”
His words were like ice water to the face and his breath caught in his throat. “You’re my . . . m-mother?”
“Yes, Ruben.”
Tears stung his eyes as emotions made it nearly impossible to speak. He opened his mouth to ask a tirade of questions that were bubbling inside of him but she placed a hand on his shoulder and said, “I understand you have so many questions that deserve to be answered but you and your friend are in danger right now. You need to wake up and save yourselves. I’ll be with you, always.”
She pressed a gentle kiss to his forehead and everything around them disappeared.
He opened his eyes and awakened.
