Into the dark
Lila and Cade were two teenagers, both 17, who had learned to survive the hard way. Orphans in their own right, they lived on the streets, relying on each other for everything. They had no family to go back to, no safe place to call home, but they had their wits and a bond forged through shared struggles. Life had been a constant game of survival, and in some ways, they had become addicted to the chaos. Breaking into abandoned buildings, sabotaging security systems, and making a quick exit before anyone noticed—that was their thrill. It wasn’t just about surviving; it was about living on the edge, about proving they could make it against the odds.
Lila, with her quick hands and sharp mind, had a knack for picking locks, while Cade, always a step ahead, could figure out the layout of any building in minutes. Together, they made an unstoppable pair, slipping in and out of places without a trace. They’d broken into abandoned factories, run-down hotels, and once even a forgotten amusement park. But tonight, they were standing outside an old house they’d never seen before—one hidden deep in the woods, its windows broken and its paint peeling. It looked perfect for a quick exploration.
“Bet there’s something cool in there,” Cade said, his dark eyes gleaming with excitement.
“Probably just rats and mold,” Lila teased, though she was just as eager to explore.
With her trusty lock-pick, Lila easily broke through the front door, and they stepped inside. The house was eerily quiet, and the air felt thick, like it hadn’t been disturbed in years. As they moved deeper inside, they passed faded furniture and dusty pictures. But something felt off—like they were being watched.
Suddenly, the door they’d entered through slammed shut with a bang, and the lights—unexpectedly still functioning—flickered on. A chill ran down Lila’s spine as she and Cade rushed back to the door. But it wouldn’t budge. No matter how hard they pulled or kicked, it was locked tight.
“What the hell?” Cade muttered, looking around for another way out.
Before they could come up with a plan, a mechanical voice crackled through hidden speakers, echoing in the empty house.
“Welcome, Lila and Cade,” the voice said, sending shivers down their spines. “You’ve spent your lives breaking in. Now let’s see if you can break out.”
Lila’s heart pounded as she exchanged a nervous glance with Cade. “What is this?”
“It’s a game,” the voice continued, as a door across the hall creaked open. “Complete the challenges, and you’ll escape. Fail… and you’ll never leave.”
The two froze, realizing this wasn’t just some abandoned house. They were trapped inside a twisted version of an escape room—a deadly one designed by a madman.
Cade clenched his fists. “We’ve been through worse,” he said, though his voice was tight with fear.
Lila nodded, her mind racing. “We can do this,” she whispered, more to herself than him.
They cautiously stepped through the open door, finding themselves in a small room lined with strange symbols and an old chest in the middle. A timer on the wall began counting down from thirty minutes.
“First challenge,” Lila said under her breath.
Without missing a beat, they tore into the room, examining the symbols, trying to decipher the puzzle before the clock ran out. Each challenge seemed designed to test them in different ways—some mental, some physical—but the stakes felt higher than anything they’d ever done. As they progressed, the puzzles became more sinister, and the voice—cold and detached—gave them chilling clues.
The house was a labyrinth, filled with trapdoors, hidden passages, and rooms that seemed to shift when they weren’t looking. At one point, they found themselves in a room with water rising rapidly from the floor. In another, the walls began to close in until Lila solved a riddle just in time.
Despite the growing tension, the two of them worked in perfect sync. Every time they found themselves cornered, they came through, one step ahead of the dangers that lurked in every challenge.
But as they neared what they hoped was the final room, exhaustion started to creep in. Lila's fingers trembled as she picked yet another lock, while Cade’s breath came in ragged gasps. They had been inside the house for what felt like hours, though they had no way of knowing exactly how long. Finally, they reached a room with one last door. The final challenge stood before them.
The voice returned, this time with a sinister laugh. “You’ve made it this far. But will you survive the end?”
Lila and Cade exchanged a glance. There was no going back now.
“Let’s finish this,” Cade whispered, determination burning in his eyes.
They stepped through the door, ready to face whatever twisted challenge awaited them next—together, just as they always had.
