Margaret had fallen asleep on top of the covers, exhausted from a long day of work and errands. She had spent hours running around, trying to get everything done on her to-do list. Suddenly, in the middle of the night, she was awakened
She looked up out of her sleep and saw her husband sitting on the edge of the bed. Light from the street lamp glowed upon their faces because Margaret had not closed the curtains. Seeing her husband she smiled.
” Hello wife”. He stroked her hair softly. ” Sorry to disturb your sleep” .
She gave a little nod. ” Apology accepted” . She stared at her husband for a while. Seeing he was bothered, she sat bolt upright on the bed. ” Is something wrong?“.
” I’m attending the council meeting tomorrow”. He watched her carefully. He could see the hurt in her eyes. He knew he’d broken the promise he made to her. ” I’m sorry Maggie but i have to”.
” You promised”. She said almost immediately. “We had an agreement. You said you wouldn’t go”.
” I know honey, i know....“.
” No you don’t” . She cuts in. ” Those people are evil, i don’t trust them Liam ” . She watched as her husband pressed his fingers to his eyes. She could see he was already getting tired of their conversation. “U don’t have to go”.
” I have to, I’m their leader. You know how improper it is for a meeting to hold without the leader showing up”. He took her hands in his. ” Please try to understand. I have to be there we both know that”.
Margaret gave a heavy sigh. She knew he was right. She wouldn’t stop him from performing his duties. ” I’m just worried. I’m having a bad feeling about this”.
Liam smiled and then laughed. ” You’ve never had a good feeling about them. So relax”. He said as he rubbed her cheek sharply. ” It’s just.....”
” Mom”. Lucy rushed in but went straight to her father. She giggled softly as she climbed unto his lap. Liam laughed, bringing her close.
Lucy had been the joy in the home. She had brought with her immense joy and laughter after her birth. She was always fond of her father. Admired by all in the village. The perfect daughter for the family but a nightmare to those she call enemies.
” I won the bet dad”. She said, swinging her legs excitedly.
Margaret frowned. ” What bet?“.
” It’s a father and daughter bet. Right princess?“.
Lucy nodded sharply.
” So you’re not going to tell mummy what the bet is all about huh?“. Margaret asked, smiling at lucy .
” I can’t tell mama”. She looked at Liam snd then back to Margaret. ” Dad told me not to”.
Liam’s eyes widened. ” You don’t have to say that part Lucy “.
Margaret laughed and then stood. ” C’mon lucy. Time for bed”. She said, stretching out her hand to lucy. Lucy quickly jumped down from Liam’s leg.
” Goodnight dad” . She said, holding Margaret hand .
Liam smiled . ” Goodnight honey”. He watched as they left the room. He sighed, trying to prepare his mind for the next day.
The council meeting.
It has always been a tough one. He knew he had enemies, ones who had always wanted his downfall. Whatever tomorrow may bring, he will be fully ready for it.
