Chapter 1

STACY

There I was, standing before the grand gates of Noble Oak University. I had finally made it. The sight was overwhelming, a culmination of dreams, sleepless nights, and countless tears. Just a few months ago, I was lying on my bed, drowning in the most suffocating panic attack of my life as I waited for my final high school results to arrive.

ting... ting...

The notification sound pierced the silence of my room. My heart dropped into my stomach as I glanced at my laptop, the glow of the screen beckoning me with both hope and dread. My hands trembled as I clicked to open the results. And there it was: I had passed. Not just passed—excelled. The tears came unbidden, hot and fast, as I smiled at the screen in disbelief. I had done it. All those late nights and self-doubt finally paid off.

Jumping out of bed, I sprinted to the kitchen where my mom was preparing lunch. It had been just the two of us since my dad passed away when I was five, and she had been my anchor in a stormy sea.

“Mom! Mom!” I yelled, my voice cracking from the intensity of my emotions.

“What is it? Are you okay?” she asked, her face contorted with worry as she put down the knife she was using to chop vegetables.

“I passed, Mom!” I said, my voice trembling as I threw myself into her arms.

Her surprise melted into joy as she hugged me tightly. “I knew you would do it, princess,” she whispered, her voice thick with pride. She held me as though she could shield me from the world, her strength wrapping around me like a warm blanket.

But the battle wasn’t over. Passing high school was just one hurdle; the next was getting into university. I had applied to several institutions, and waiting for their responses was a test of endurance. My mother, always the optimist, reassured me every day. “You’re capable, Stacy. You’ve worked so hard, and any university would be lucky to have you.” Her words were a balm, but the anxiety gnawed at me relentlessly, casting a shadow over every moment of peace.

The days were long, and the waiting seemed eternal. To distract myself, I spent time with my friends, who always managed to pull me out of my spiraling thoughts. Especially Kyle. Kyle was my rock, my boy best friend since childhood. We met when I was five, shortly after my dad’s death, and his family moved into the house next door. He was seven at the time, and it felt as though he was heaven-sent to look after me.

Now twenty and a second-year business major at Elysian University, Kyle was everything I hoped to be: confident, driven, and unshakably kind. We had always planned to attend the same university. Elysian was the dream—only a two-hour drive from home and an opportunity to continue our bond as housemates. It made perfect sense.

When the notification from Elysian’s admissions office appeared on my phone, I was filled with cautious hope. But as I read the email, my world crumbled. I didn’t get in.

The rejection hit me like a physical blow, stealing the air from my lungs. Tears blurred my vision as I read the words over and over, hoping they would somehow change. All my efforts, all my sacrifices, felt like they had been for nothing. And worse, the future I envisioned with Kyle vanished before my eyes. The apartment we dreamed of sharing, the late-night study sessions, the comfort of having him by my side—gone.

I tried calling him, desperate for comfort, but his phone rang unanswered. He was probably in class or asleep, blissfully unaware of the heartbreak I was enduring alone.

I couldn’t stay in my room. The walls felt like they were closing in. Dragging myself to my mother’s bedroom, I found her getting ready for work. She took one look at me and opened her arms, pulling me close before I could say a word.

“It’s okay, my baby. It’s okay,” she murmured, stroking my hair as I sobbed into her shoulder. “You’re going to be okay, my love. Other universities will see how amazing you are. This isn’t the end.”

Her voice was soft, soothing, but I couldn’t shake the despair. How could she be so sure? How could she always know the right thing to say? Her unshakable faith in me was both a comfort and a burden, because in that moment, I didn’t believe in myself.

The days following the rejection felt like wading through molasses. My friends tried to cheer me up, but nothing could fill the void. Even Kyle’s eventual call, filled with reassurances and offers to help me reapply next year, couldn’t lift the heaviness in my chest. The thought of being left behind while everyone else moved forward was unbearable.

But then came another notification. Another email. This one from Noble Oak University.

My heart raced as I opened it, the dread mixing with a flicker of hope. And then I saw it: “Congratulations!” The word leapt off the screen, and I felt a rush of emotions so powerful that my knees buckled.

I was in.

The joy was overwhelming, but so was the fear. This was a new chapter, a new beginning, far from home and everyone I knew. Yet, as I stood before the gates of Noble Oak University, I realized that maybe, just maybe, this was where I was meant to be.
