Prologue

Clapping filled the space between the seats in the opera. People made sure to get up, applauding the performance as their smiles almost reached their eyes, congratulating the one man standing at the center of the stage. They chanted his name, screamed the syllables loud enough to make the building shake and his sensitive ears hurt.

Yet he took it all in, the sounds of their cheerfulness, the echoing march of their hands.

Zaros bowed.

“And that was all from our most genius performer! Zaros Versera!” The announcer, a short man called from behind the red curtains of the stage as the man in its center continued to bow.

The curtains closed soon after, leaving the crowd of people to take their leave.

“Congratulations, Zaros! Another successful night,” The announcer neared Zaros, his fake cheerfulness causing wrinkles to pop out around his mouth. “If only you could follow the actual script...”

Zaros scoffed, hands going to his hair to run through the long red strands. He walked backstage and gingerly made his way through the crowd of actors and towards the exit.

“Won’t you say something?” The announcer followed in his steps, struggling to keep up.

“Annoying little man.” Zaros grinned, his long fangs showing from the line of his lips in a manner that could only be described as threatening, making the man step back and finally shut up. “Better to know when to shut up.”

Zaros clicked his tongue, eyes darting with annoyance towards the exit he so wanted to use right now. He had other places to be at.

“Just send my cut of the money at the usual address.” He said, heading for the exit and eventually getting out of sight, drowning in the shadows of the night.

Music filled his long ears, the smoke in the room filled his nose, dulling all his senses. Zaros’ eyes were closed as his head was leant back against a soft pillow, propped on the couch he was sitting on. His glass with unnamed alcohol made his tongue tingle as he took a sip, relaxing in the atmosphere and his bundled-up nerves.

He felt the presence of the woman before her legs even reached him. Slowly opening his eyes, he could see her breast, perked up and taken over by goosebumps because of the low temperature in the room. Her long auburn hair swayed to the side as she leaned towards him and straddled his hips.

Zaros looked at her calmly, raised an eyebrow in something that could only be described as amusement and nothing else. He’s been here many times before, taking on men and women alike. That’s what he paid for after all. Getting drunk on alcohol and blood alike, high on plants he didn’t know the names of, having sex with whoever decided to come close enough was the highlight of his boring day. It’s not like there was something else to do for a vampire in France in the 13th century. He needed something to take his mind off the performances and the society of vampires that lurked in the shadows.

The woman on top of him reminded him of her presence by rolling her hips and biting down on his neck. Her dull, human teeth did nothing to even break his skin. Zaros hummed, hands snaking to her ass and playfully spreading her cheeks. His fingers found her entrance fast enough, burrowing in her. The woman threw her head back as a moan left her mouth. He used the moment to bite her neck, his teeth scraping her skin and making blood flow deliciously on his lips.

“Come here.” He then waved to the servant boy standing by the door, nervously holding a jug, filled with the same unknown alcoholic liquid.

The boy, or more accurately, the young man swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing in his slender throat, but followed his order and cautiously neared the couch.

Zaros slowly tracked his every movement with his red eyes, all the while continuously playing with the woman on his hips.

“Fill my glass.” The words felt foreign even on his tongue as he desperately lapped at the blood.

The younger man didn’t dare to look him in the eyes as he bowed and filled the glass, nervously glancing at the woman now undoing Zaros’ pants. When he was finished and was about to back up his wrist got caught in between five pale and cold digits, dirty with that prostitute’s juices.

“No one has excused you yet.” Zaros leaned his head back, pulling the young adult towards himself and locking their lips in a heated kiss. All the while the woman tried to slide on his dick, moaning for all the others in the room to hear.

The woman was now moving on top of him as Zaros was devouring the man’s mouth, mixing saliva with the taste of blood and alcohol. His senses were clouded and all he could do was let himself submerge in the pleasure of having those curvy hips pressed so tightly against his own.

The door opened with a loud bang as it hit the wall, startling all the people in the room. A tall, dark figure entered through, long cloak flowing flawlessly around the massive beast of a vampire. The newcomer made his presence known by stopping the music and standing right in front of the couch, face carefully crafted in a mask of indifference.

Zaros let the young man go but kept the woman on his dick and continued moving in her, not ceasing his thrusts. Her moans were the only sound in the room. The presence of this new man didn’t do anything to stop his endeavors. Quite the opposite as it encouraged him to make the woman moan louder.

“Seems like you’re quite busy,” The tall vampire raised one of his black eyebrows. “Is this maybe not the time to seek out your services, bounty hunter?”

Zaros scoffed at the title, stopping his thrusts enough for him to look at the beast. Their red eyes met in a battle of dominance, two almost ancient beings in a glaring contest, flaunting their power.

“What could possibly Dracula himself want with this simple creature?” Zaros smirked back, unfazed by the woman that was now working tirelessly to make him cum.

“Simple is not the right word to describe what kind of creature you are.”

“Then what word would you use?”

“Monstrous.”

Zaros laughed, grabbing the woman by the shoulders and pushing her off himself, getting up. He was still feeling kind of high but that was never truly an issue. He faced Dracula with all he had, as tall as the dark vampire and as cruel as him with a look that could kill.

“Who do you want me to hunt for you?”

\**/

Fire crackled in the old inn he was in. The news had already reached the whole of Wallachia about the massacre Dracula had led after his wife, Lisa Tepes, had been burned alive. As a witch, not a doctor.

Zaros knew the woman, had enjoyed her company while she was studying how to help the humans, while she was trying to encourage Dracula to travel. Zaros had laughed in his old friend’s face at the time. Now all he wanted to do was go back and punch him instead.

“Dracula wanting to rid the world of humans? That’s bullshit. He married one, I was there,” Zaros raised his beer to his mouth, taking a large gulp like his life had depended on it. “Do you think I’m stupid enough to believe there isn’t another reason for his madness?”

Adrian Tepes was looking calmly at him, eyes big and golden, full of grief and sadness. He was sitting without a hood on, letting his hair, the same color as his mother’s, fall free around his face. Adrian looked good, he always did, even while cursing at the world and crying his tears.

Zaros felt his chest tighten, the words he wanted to say, the comfort he wanted to give were lodging themselves somewhere deep inside him. He drank again. He drank because he didn’t have the right to open his mouth, not after being the reason for Adrian’s tears.

“Dracula needs to be stopped.” Adrian said, voice low and distant as if he was talking more to himself, rather than Zaros.

“So, you want to hire me to chop off your father’s head?”

He wouldn’t do it; he couldn’t kill his friend even if it meant angering Adrian. Even if it meant the dhampir would not look at him again. Then there was the other slight problem with that whole ordeal. Dracula wasn’t one to stay still while being butchered.

The silence Adrian was giving was the answer. Zaros didn’t respond, the burn in his chest, the tightening of the bond was making him dizzy.

Zaros drank the rest of his beer, slammed a few coins on the wooden table and got up. He didn’t need to say anything, didn’t even need to turn to Adrian as he exited the inn. The boy already knew Zaros wouldn’t comply, even if it meant the breaking of their relationship.
